Such measures can reduce the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus when visiting a doctor’s office for a flu shot or another visit, so patients should not be hesitant to receive their vaccinations in 2020. Patients can follow such protocols even if their doctors are not insisting they do so. The same safety measures can be followed by people who intend to get their flu shots from neighborhood pharmacies. Flu shots are vital to individual and public health every year, but the importance of being vaccinated against influenza in 2020 is heightened as the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.

How to Take a More Active Role in Your Personal Health The role individuals play in their own health care became more prominent in 2020. As a global pandemic forced people from all walks of life to prioritize their personal health each time they left their homes, many individuals sought ways to take a more active role in their health care. Proactive health care has long been touted by medical professionals, though many people still don’t take such recommendations to heart. In fact, a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as much as 75 percent of health care spending in the United States is reactive in nature, meaning that money is going toward treating conditions and diseases rather than preventing them from occurring in the first place. Taking an active role in your own health care is easier than people may think. And the benefits of such a proactive approach are numerous, including a reduced risk for various diseases.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses. They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was

inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. A Generous Donation Restoration Kitchen & Cocktails is one of many new eating establishments which recently set up shop in the Village of Lindenhurst. While their unique blend of scrumptious appetizers, entrees and libations is certainly worthy of regular visits, what truly sets Restoration apart is their commitment to community. When Billy Miller and wife Nicole decided to open a restaurant, they did so with a purpose: to restore faith in humanity, one person at a time. Toward that end, Restoration’s motto - “Be the Good You Want to See in the World” - is accomplished by donating 100% of the net profits to local charities, foundations and families in

need. After learning of the wonderful work that the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst does for children in the community, Billy and Nicole met with the club’s board and were convinced that those works and the Kiwanis motto - “To Improve the World One Child and One Community at a Time” - was well-suited to Restoration’s purpose. And so in January they selected Lindenhurst Kiwanis as a recipient of their fundraising efforts. Then the world changed. After the shutdown in March due to the coronavirus, Billy, Nicole, and the entire staff at Restoration, worked tirelessly - at first offering take-out to patrons and then

by setting up tables in what was their parking lot so that diners could safely enjoy the Restoration experience. And thankfully, the community responded by supporting Restoration. As a result of and as payback for that support, on Tuesday Billy and Nicole presented the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst with a check for $14,262.00 that will be used for years to come to help send children to Kamp Kiwanis in upstate New York for a week of summer fun and adventure. Even in trying times such as these, it’s refreshing to know that we can still “Be the Good You Want to See in the World”.
