The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

it to the recipient right in his hometown! The recipient was filled with joy and loves his new scooter.

They are presently looking for wish applicants in the Long Island area. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, in conjunction with high schools around the world, awards promising students who excel in math and science the prestigious Rensselaer Medal Scholarship while in their junior year of high school.

The merit scholarship is valued at $100,000 and is awarded to students who are nominated by their guidance departments and meet a specific criteria. Christian has been on the high honor roll throughout his high school career. He’s an AP Scholar,

as well as an active member of both the National Honor Society and Tri M Music Honor Society. He plans to pursue a degree in computer science after his graduation from North Babylon High School in June of 2020.

Welcome Back! Kicking off the 20192020 school year on Sept. 4, students in the West Babylon School District were all smiles as they entered exited the buses and entered their respective buildings. Students spent the day reconnecting with friends, getting acquainted with their new teachers, schedules and, in some cases, buildings and lockers. Sixth graders and freshmen toured their new buildings, received

their schedule and tried out their lockers prior to the start of opening day. Kindergarten students became acquainted with their new building and participated in some icebreaker activities to connect with their classmates. During the summer months, the district’s facilities were being prepared for the new school year. When students entered their buildings, there were new door

vestibule doors, new Senior High School art rooms, new pavements, sidewalk and curbing at Forest and Santapogue elementary schools, new hallway floor and ceiling tiles and new lights at Forest Avenue, new floor tiles and painted second floor classrooms at Tooker Avenue and more updates. It was a sunny start to the new year and students are looking forward to a great year ahead.

Warning Against Phone Scams Suffolk County Sheriff Dr. Errol D. Toulon, Jr. would like to alert all Suffolk County residents to a phone scam currently being received by many seniors in the county. The scammer calls as a representative from the Sheriff’s Office and states that a warrant is an active arrest warrant. The scammer also states that this warrant can

be resolved by making a payment over the phone using popular gift cards. The Sheriff would like to remind all residents that neither the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, nor any government entity, will call you on the phone requesting payment over the phone. After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014. Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks.

Additionally, studentrepresentatives from both the junior and senior high school student councils were in attendance to offer valuable advice as to what the students will be able to look forward to throughout the school year, such as homecoming, the “Souper Bowl of Caring” and the French talent show. encouraged the incoming students to look into opportunities such as the various clubs and activities offered at the school. At the conclusion of the Rowe Hall presentation, families participated in a question-and-answer session as the incoming students were broken up into groups to further explore the school halls and engage in icebreaker activities within the classrooms hosted by the student council members.

In preparation for another successful school year, faculty and staff members of the Babylon School District kicked off the 2019-20 school year with the annual Superintendent’s Conference Day on Sept. 3 held at Babylon JuniorSenior High School’s Rowe Hall. Prior to Babylon School District Superintendent of School Linda Rozzi’s welcoming address, she took a moment to reflect on former Babylon Junior-Senior High School social studies teacher Joe Fragapane, who passed away this past summer. Babylon

School District Teachers Association President Robert Richardelli offered a touching speech which celebrated the life of Mr. Fragapane and was followed by a thunderous round of applause from the attendees who joined him in paying their respects toward the former educator. Mrs. Rozzi then addressed the crowd of eager educators and reviewed the many wonderful additions to the district, including technological upgrades and a number of staff members spanning all district educational buildings. After her address,

multiple faculty and staff members who have been with the district for 20, 25 and 30 years were recognized for their hard work and determination.
