Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly Delivers

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) has procured and personally delivered more than 8,500 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including cloth face masks, gloves and hand sanitizer, to local libraries, community groups, food pantries, churches and schools to assist them during the COVID-19 pandemic. The safe reopening of community spaces has been a top priority of Legislator Donnelly, and he has been working closely

with Suffolk County’s Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to dispense these critical supplies. Legislator Donnelly has made deliveries to the recently reopened North Babylon, Half Hollow Hills and South Huntington Public Libraries, TriCommunity and Youth Agency in Huntington, St. Elizabeth’s Church in Melville and Meals on Wheels. Legislator Donnelly was also able to honor the requests of the Deer Park and South

Huntington School Districts to provide PPE to students and staff as they prepare for the 2020-2021 school year. “Our exceptional and caring local organizations and schools are working hard to ensure a safe return for all, and I am pleased to be able to play a role in helping them take steps to return to some much needed normalcy,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank County Executive Steve Bellone and all those involved for ensuring the availability of these critical supplies.”

According to Harvard Health Publications, people who routinely volunteer are less likely than non-volunteers to develop cardiovascular issues, including high blood pressure. Community service is a great way to strengthen one’s community and build relationships with neighbors. But the benefits of volunteering go beyond building communities. Studies have found that individuals who volunteer have lower mortality rates than non-volunteers. A 2012 study published in the journal Health Psychology found that people who volunteered for self-oriented reasons had similar mortality risk as non-volunteers, while those who volunteered to help others had a lower mortality risk than nonvolunteers.

Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. That itch you’re feeling? It’s not chiggers! Every year thousands of people report itchy red bites from what they think is an encounter with chiggers. In fact, evidence shows there are no chiggers on Long Island. It’s the larva of Lone Star ticks that’s causing those itchy red welts on your skin. Lone Star larvae begin hatching in July and will remain active until the fall months. The newly hatched larval ticks will cluster in hundreds or sometimes even thousands which is why people will often get bitten many times, usually on the ankle’s, legs and waist. Honor America on Patriot Day September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crashlanded. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks,

is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.
