The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks. com, when you enter the charity code FGWIBCC20. Town of Babylon Community Development Block Grant Funding Now Available to Town of Babylon Residents for Home Improvements Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), on behalf of the Town of Babylon, is accepting applications from Town of Babylon residents for their Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Home Improvement Program. This program provides deferred payment loans (zero percent interest) to qualified low and moderate income homeowners in the Town of Babylon in order to improve housing conditions and correct housing code violations by repairing and rehabilitating health and safety hazards, including lead-based paint removal. Eligible Home Repairs / Improvements can include, but are not limited to, electrical improvements, accessibility improvements, insulation and energy conservation measures, new heating systems, new roofs, new windows and doors, plumbing, structural improvements and vinyl siding. Hats Off To The West Babylon Class of 2020 While the ceremonies may have been smaller, the excitement, encouragement and accomplishments were vast as the West Babylon Senior High School Class of 2020 celebrated its commencement exercises. To keep to social distancing practices, the district held seven ceremonies during the course of a two-day period on the West Babylon Junior High School football field on July 30 and 31. Each graduate was seated with two invited guests on the field, while others could view the ceremonies livestreamed at home. Following “The StarSpangled Banner” by Jenna Halvorsen and Darren Del Orfano, Carissa Brock took to the podium for “God Bless America.” West Babylon Senior High School Interim Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo, who is retiring next month after 26 years serving as principal of the school, welcomed the soon-to-be graduates and attendees. “I have been able to cheer for you, applaud you and encourage you to be your best selves,” she said. “The final chapter of your senior year has been like none before you. You will be remembered for your perseverance through this time. Embrace all this because it has made
