The Charity of the Month for August is: The Social Brain www.facebook.com/socialbrainny

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. ORANGETHEORY FITNESS COMES TO FARMINGDALE If you have heard anything about Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) you’ve probably heard that is is “more than a regular workout”. Orangetheory is a sciencebacked, technology-tracked, coach-inspired group workout, which is designed to produce results from the inside out. Perhaps you’ve tried a gym or fitness routine in the past that just felt like a dead-end - no guidance, no inspiration and no results. OTF wants you to know that it’s not you, it’s your work out and that you can still achieve your goals to become a fitter, stronger, better version of yourself. Nick Galanis is a Long Island Area Developer for Orangetheory Fitness. This new Farmingdale studio, located at 253 Airport Plaza Blvd in Farmingdale, is the 10th OTF studio that he operates. Nick found his lifelong passion for health and fitness when he enlisted in the Marines and working out became his daily escape. At Orangetheory Fitness all of the classes offered are an hour long and are in a group setting. No two classes are alike and members don’t know which kind of class they will be walking into before they arrive. Their coaches are skilled and work with each member of the group to keep them motivated, positive and in the correct form for the workout they are doing. Their classes are designed for people of all fitness levels and members can work out at their own pace. If you are recovering from an injury or orthopedic issue and need

special guidance there is no reason to worry, just tell your coach. They have options for every exercise. One of the most unique parts of OTF is that all members can track their results. Members get hooked up to a heart rate monitor upon arrival to a class and its technology not only measures your heart rate,

but it gathers performance data as well. The workout equipment at each studio is state of the art and the environment is truly unique. The following various membership opportunities are available: Basic Membership, which allows you to sign up for 4 classes/month; Elite Membership, which allows you to sign up for 8 classes/month and Premier Membership, which allows you to sign up for an unlimited amount of classes each month. Club Awards Annual Scholarships Babylon Village Women’s Club (BVWC), a Long Island based not-for-profit focused on the needs of the community, is pleased to announce one of the winners of its 2019 annual scholarships. Any woman who works or lives in the Town of Babylon and is a “non-traditional” student is eligible to apply, and applicants are vetted through the BVWC Scholarship Committee. This year’s two awardees were selected from 10 applicants, with one scholarship awarded at last week’s Midsummer Soirée held at The Piermont in Babylon Village. The awardees were selected on the basis of their ability to overcome setbacks, financial need and their plans postgraduation as well as their willingness to be an active part of the BVWC. Recipient Luisa Corrigan, shared, “Being gifted The Babylon Village Women’s Club scholarship has eliminated some of the

sacrifices my family and I make to pursue my education, giving us peace of mind. This Scholarship Committee has given me their personal investment and good faith into my future of becoming a nurse. My education will allow me to build on existing skills in caring for my family and community. I hope to have the opportunity to inspire future recipients, and advocate the committee’s platform, in steadily encouraging and honoring resilient smart women, in need.” The second recipient of the award will be announced at a holiday event later this winter. In addition to announcing one of the winners for the 2019 scholarship, Scholarship Committee Chair Melissa Muma shared that in 2020 the club will be expanding the opportunity for applicants to include students who are graduating from high schools. Muma stated,

“This decision was made possible as a result of the tremendous support of the Babylon Village community. We are fortunate to live in such an altruistic town and look forward to broadening the BVWC reach within our community.” About the Babylon Village Women’s Club Founded in 1991, the BVWC was created in order to focus upon the needs of the local community. Since that time the club has expanded its mission to provide scholarships to women returning to school, provide direct support to families in crisis and support the community at large through volunteer activities, food drives and financial support. Scholarships have been awarded by the BVWC for more than XX years. This year, the club awarded $2,000 in scholarships. STEAMy Art Camp The North Babylon School District kicked off the summer with its exciting and interactive STEAMy Art Camp that was held at the North Babylon High School. Students from grades 3-5 explored science, technology, education, art and math with a focus on art. They investigated,

invented and played while creating a series of artworks. In addition, they worked on projects such as crafting drawing-robots, toothpick towers and dinosaur sculptures. Artists from the Long Island Children’s Museum visited the camp and led students in innovative workshops. Through these

activities, they learned ancient cave paintings and the art of their preservation, separation techniques used by criminologists and the structure and function of feathers. The camp wrapped up with a celebration and an art gallery that featured student work.

whenever possible, the cremation is to take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a body-soul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physical signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason creamation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains”. The Church asks that we use this term instead of the term “cremains,” as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body.

An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry).
