It took Ashley Beck and Briana Nevers over 50 hours to complete their Silver award. Ashley Beck is a 13 year-old (incoming 9th grader) who attends the North Babylon School district. Her friend Briana is also 13 and recently just moved out of the district but was part of this district since kindergarten. They are part of Girl Scout Troop 2780 in North Babylon and have been Girl Scouts for nine years. For their Silver award the girls decided to take part in sewing over 120 whimsical pillowcases to benefit Ryan’s Case for Smiles. An organization aimed at creating an emotionally uplifting boost for kids in hospitals. These pillowcases enable the kids who are in hospitals or are dealing with

fellow scouts in North Babylon ranging in ages 5-16. By hosting classes the girls were able to get over a 100 yards of fabric donated. Which enabled them to make so many pillowcases. During this project, the girls learned all about a dying trade; they learned how to cut, pin and set up the sewing machine as well as how to use the sewing machine effortlessly. Through their efforts they were able to sew and deliver over 100 pillowcases. The Long Island liaison for the organization, Samantha Bunster was extremely helpful in helping the girls attain their goal and deliver the pillowcases. This project meant a great deal to the girls as they learned many things along the way such as the importance of communication,

community, delegation, preparation, modifying skill levels, time management and team work. They truly enjoyed doing this project and feel good that they were able

I have written extensively about cremation over the years. I have discussed the difference between direct cremation and a traditional funeral with cremation instead of burial. I have previously discussed the relationship of the Catholic Church and cremation. On March 21, 1997, the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments granted the indult requested by the American Bishops to permit the Diocesan Bishop to allow the presence of the cremated remains of the body at the Funeral Liturgy in the Dioceses of the United States. The new ritual adaptations became mandatory on November 2, 1997 in the Diocese of the United States.

We have all heard, “Catholics are not allowed to cremate”. This is simply not true. Canonical prohibition against cremation was lifted in 1963 on the eve of the Second Vatical Council by the authority of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (then the Holy Office). Since 1963, cremation of the deceased has become an acceptable alternative to interment PROVIDING cremation was not chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teachings. Permission for cremation would be denied only when it is based on secretariat spirit, hatred of the Catholic religion or the Church, or a denial of Christian Doctrine. However, “The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed.” The reason interment of the deceased is preferred over cremation is fundamentally one of pastoral care.
