Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s

event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning

without chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekend-

long 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local non-profit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly Honors Two Veterans as 17th District Seniors of the Year

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) honored Kenneth “Ken” Carlson of Melville and Robert “Bob” Santo of Huntington Station as Legislative District 17 Seniors of the Year at an outdoor, appropriately socially-distanced meeting of the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244 on July 8 at the Greenlawn Knights of Columbus Hall. Mr. Carlson, a veteran of the United States Army from 1968 to 1972, served in Vietnam and received

the Bronze Star. With the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244, he serves in the Color Guard and is the Post’s parade organizer and notary. In addition, Mr. Carlson is an active member of the Strathmore Civic Association where he is currently treasurer. A veteran who served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970, Mr. Santo is a former 10-year Commander and current Financial Officer of the Greenlawn American Legion Post 1244. Mr. Santo is also a

liaison with the SailAhead Program, a therapeutic sailing platform that helps PTSD-suffering veterans and brings awareness to Post Traumatic Stress and Veteran Suicide. “It was a privilege to recognize Ken Carlson and Bob Santo, two outstanding and deserving veterans, as Legislative District 17 Seniors of the Year for 2020,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank them for their past service to this nation and their continued service to our community.”
