Congratulations Class of 2020 The North Babylon School District’s Board of Education, administration, staff, family and friends filed into the North Babylon High School’s stadium for the commencement ceremonies for the high school’s graduating Class of 2020 on June 26 and June 27. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the graduation was broken up into seven ceremonies to ensure public safety. In addition to their live ceremonies, the district also hosted a virtual ceremony. The first ceremony on June 26 kicked off with Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach and North Babylon High School Principal Jonathan Klomp highlighting the accomplishments of the Class of 2020. Prior to receiving their diplomas, the 354 students heard from several speakers who shared their wisdom and words of motivation for their new journey. This included Superintendent Eschbach, Principal Klomp, and senior class co-president Katie Doyle. Valedictorian Bryan Sabogal and salutatorian

Carlos Sabogal were unable to attend the live ceremonies due to the pandemic but had their speeches streamed during the virtual ceremony. Principal Klomp made introductions and thanked all those who made the live and virtual ceremonies possible. “Breaking up the Class of 2020 in a safe manner consistent with New York State requirements for social gatherings in order to recognize each student, required a lot of planning and flexibility. But we are bulldog strong and even though we are not all together today, we are together,” he continued. “Your high school graduation is an important milestone but just one of many available to you as a result of the education that has been provided by the hard working and dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff within the North Babylon School District. Congratulations to all of you. Superintendent Eschbach challenged students to make a conscious effort to practice

kindness and maintain dignity and respect. “Become mindful of how you respond to others and be responsible for your words and your actions. Acknowledge the value of different perspectives, create relationships that build trust, limit bias and favoritism and strive for the best overall outcomes. Do your part to make your school, workplace and community and better place for all to work live, learn and play. Be kind, be proud of who you are and stay true to yourself,” he continued. “Take the time to reflect back on all that you have accomplished and use it to fuel your next chapter. Always remember your bulldog pride and your North Babylon roots, which have helped shape you into the fine individuals that you have become.” The North Babylon High School’s Class of 2020 turned the tassels on their caps from right to left prior to receiving their diplomas and safely exiting the field with their families.

New Principal Appointed At West Babylon SHS Stephen O’Leary, who has served as the assistant principal of the West Babylon Senior High School for the past eight years, will step into the role of principal beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. He will work alongside West Babylon Senior High School Interim Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo during a transition period in July and August. Dr. Vassallo announced her retirement after serving as principal of the school for the past 26 years. “I intend to work with all stakeholders in West Babylon to provide the

very best educational experience for every child who passes through the doors of the high school,” O’Leary said. O’Leary has been a part of the West Babylon school community since 2005. Beginning as a mathematics teacher in the high school, he transitioned to the role of mathematics chairperson and mathematics and science chairperson. In 2012, he stepped into the role of assistant principal and also currently serves as the West Babylon Administrator’s Association president.

O’Leary holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in mathematics from Stony Brook University. He received an advanced graduate certification in educational administration from Stony Brook University. He holds certifications in school building leader and school district leader. “I have been privileged over the course of the past 15 years to work in West Babylon. I am emotionally invested in this community, specifically in the continued success of the high school,” he said.

This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. Babylon High School recently honored its exceptional Class of 2020 with a series of four graduation ceremonies. On June 26, all 135 members of the graduating class gathered on the school’s football field for a “Senior Farewell.” Wearing masks and separated by six feet in all directions, the seniors listened to a reflection by senior class president Madaline Graham, a greeting from principal HATS OFF - Hats off to the Babylon High School Class of 2020. On June 27, BHS held three diploma conferment ceremonies, during which the names of all graduates were announced. Each session included 45 students, each of whom were allowed two guests. Factors To Consider Before Reopening

Small business owners have to make many difficult decisions due to the fallout from the COVID-19 outbreak. Perhaps no decision is more difficult for small business owners than when to reopen their businesses. The decision regarding when to reopen a business requires business owners to consider a host of factors, many of which may be beyond their control. • Local guidelines: While it’s every small business owner’s goal to get back to work or return to normalcy as quickly as possible, that decision is largely up to local government officials. Many areas are taking a gradual approach to reopening their economies while also noting that they could implement new closures if virus numbers start to increase. Business owners must familiarize themselves with their local government guidelines to determine where they fall in the reopening pecking order. •Long-term consequences: Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have repeatedly sounded the alarm in regard to lifting social distancing measures, including guidelines governing non-essential businesses, too early. Such officials warn that the long-term effects could be considerably more devastating from both a public health and economic standpoint than the short-term effects many businesses have already endured. Business owners must take the potential long-term consequences of reopening into consideration when trying to decide if the time is right to reopen. • Vendor availability: The interconnected nature of the economy has never been more apparent than over the last couple of months. Business owners who want to reopen

must determine if the vendors they rely on are reopening as well. If not, finding new vendors may not be as simple as opening up the phone book. Some vendors are now requiring cash-ondelivery, which can pose additional problems for small business owners who have generated little to no revenue since the outbreak. The status of existing contracts with vendors also must be considered before business owners can begin new relationships with new vendors. • Safety: The safety of employees and customers is another factor to consider before reopening. Some staff members who have been laid off or furloughed may not be comfortable coming back to work, while customers also may be hesitant to be out in public. •Post-pandemic consumers: Various economists have noted that the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to change consumer habits. While everyone is itching to get out and about, consumers have been forced to adopt new habits while social distancing, and economists predict many of those new habits will become permanent. Small businesses may have to cater to consumers who now prefer products be shipped to their homes, which may require small business owners to more fully embrace e-commerce. Now is a great time for small business owners to determine if they’re ready to make that transition. If not, delaying reopening until e-commerce capabilities are stronger may be the wisest choice for small business owners. Every small business owner wants the economy to reopen. But each small business owner must consider an assortment of factors before deciding to reopen.
