Babylon IDA’s Economic Inclusion Initiative Is Proof Of Progress Program Supporting MWBEs With Training And Resources Sets Example For The State expand this program locally while regions throughout the state can launch similar programs so we can really make some progress on this front statewide.” Since its launch in the fall of 2020, the initiative has guided the development of nearly 30 aspiring or existing business owners who were looking for direction amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. From a financial perspective, the program has helped business owners secure nointerest loans while also improving access to capital by creating supporting crowdfunding and micro-lending. Technical assistance has also been provided to address sales and profit deficiencies, closure rates and other barriers to business growth while overseeing partnerships with foundations and universities to provide capacity building. Additionally, the initiative has helped many business owners acquire MWBE certification by providing assistance in acquiring necessary certification and bonding while also promoting partnerships between Town and minority consultants, contractors,

Eastern Suffolk BOCES collaborates with Pal-OMine to provide students with alternative approaches for educational success. These organization’s use a comprehensive team approach and are seeking individuals for paid positions who have educational, mental health, speech and occupational therapy backgrounds, as well as

those with Department of Corrections, Department of Probation, and State or County Court experience. Volunteers, including retired first responders and veterans, are also sought. Two local entrepreneurs have already taken advantage of this program and both have seen an increase in revenue, sales and hiring. There are two more businesses going through the process to take advantage of the successful pilot program. “The Economic Inclusion Initiative is a crucial initiative to bridge the gap between an entrepreneur’s vision, implementation and sustained success,” said

NAACP LI Regional Director Tracey Edwards. “The program aims to remove all obstacles, close the revenue gap, and create more paths of entrepreneurship through innovation and partnership. What the Babylon IDA has launched is an effective model of a community-driven strategy that should be used across New York State.” Contributing greatly to this development has been an ongoing series of educational events and training resources for business owners. This fall, the initiative will host a bootcamp series focusing on business development and social media marketing. There are also numerous B2B Minority, Women and Veteran networking event series being planned to help entrepreneurs make the business connections that can support and elevate their businesses. The Babylon IDA is hopeful and encouraged that two other IDA’s in the state have reached out to learn more about replicating this program in their region. “If we can make this program a statewide staple, its potential for not only helping improve the economy, but the lives of so many new and existing business owners is limitless,” said Matt McDonough, Special Counsel to the Babylon IDA. “We encourage our counterparts in IDAs throughout the state as well as the state legislature to make this issue a priority. In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow. The program, which is aimed at supporting and elevating Minority, Women and Veteran Business Enterprise entrepreneurs within the Town of Babylon, has helped dozens of dedicated entrepreneurs connect to financial, technical and legal assistance, with many starting new businesses or getting MWBE certified in the process. “The purpose of this effort was to focus on entrepreneurs within the Town that were primed for success but didn’t have all the tools or resources to do so,” said Tom Dolan, CEO of the Babylon IDA. “Helping to fill these common gaps, which are hurdles to success, was our main objective and with the results we have seen from this program’s infancy tell us we are onto something revolutionary. It also offers employment services, with Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) to achieve and maintain employment, and to support independent living through training, education, rehabilitation and career development. Hampton Classic Horse Show To Host FEI CSI 5* And 2* Competitions The Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the country’s most prestigious hunter-jumper horse shows, will unveil new state-of-the-art all-weather footing in its Grand Prix Ring and a new schedule with FEI CSI 5* and 2* competitions when it returns for its 46th edition, August 28-September 4. The new CSI 5* status means an increase in prize money to more than $1 million, with $410,000 for the Classic’s featured Hampton Classic Grand Prix on Sunday, September 4. New all-weather footing in the Grand Prix Ring will allow for an expanded schedule featuring the 5* and 2* as well as some new divisions. “We are truly excited about hosting a CSI 5* and having the opportunity to expand our schedule,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, the Classic’s Executive Director. “Our new allweather footing enables us

to hold more classes in the Grand Prix Ring and our move to 5* status is sure to attract the best horses and riders from all across the country and beyond.” The Hampton Classic will host a live discussion on Clubhouse to discuss the new schedule and footing on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. All are invited to participate. The footing is being installed by Travis Gould and his JTWG, Inc. It is engineered using the same state-of-the-art processes that were used for the new footing in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida and Tryon Stadium in Tryon, North Carolina, both of which have received rave reviews. The laboratory design and modeling of the footing for those “UltraCompetition” arenas was done by Bill Hawe, CEO of iEquiTek, LLC, who is

overseeing the project for the Hampton Classic. The state-of-the-art processes being employed for the Hampton Classic by this team will also be used for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Finals in Omaha.

“I think this is fantastic news,” said seven-time Hampton Classic Grand Prix champion McLain Ward. “The Hampton Classic has always been one of our sport’s premier events, equal to any Five Star. Now with official Five

Star status plus its new footing that has proven at Wellington to be as good as there is, the Hampton Classic will solidify its position as one of the most outstanding events in the world.” Ultra-Competition arenas are an example of the most extremely fine-tuned riding surfaces. Utilizing lab measurements, coupled with comparisons in the iEquiTek database, formulae are developed to improve certain aspects of the peak performance. The speeds and heights of CSI 5* competitions in general make for a narrow aperture of what is acceptable, even in the best of conditions. CSI 5* competitions may be held in the rain, yet still demand 5* levels of performance. Bill Hawe, from iEquiTek said, “The Hampton Classic is to be commended for its all-in commitment to advancing the state-of-theart for performance, safety

and horse welfare. This helps change the sport for the better. We are very excited to partner with the Hampton Classic on this project.” The Grand Prix Ring is the centerpiece of the Classic’s six show rings. Longines is the Official Timekeeper for the Hampton Classic which will also be adding new divisions such as Low Adult and Children’s Jumpers, Low Adult and Children’s Hunters and 3’6” High Performance Hunters. This will allow some exhibitors who have never previously had the chance to ride at the Hampton Classic to do so. More details on this year’s schedule will be forthcoming soon. Don’t Let Your Car Make Your Allergies Worse Cabin air filters clean the incoming air, removing allergens, as long as they’re replaced regularly. “A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can cause contaminants to become so concentrated in the cabin that passengers actually breathe in more fumes and particles when riding in the car than when walking down the street,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Replacing the cabin air filter is a simple way for you and your passengers to breathe easier while driving.” In addition to trapping pollen, bacteria, dust and exhaust gases, the cabin air filter prevents leaves, bugs and other debris from entering the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. A restricted cabin air filter can mean musty odors in the vehicle and impair airflow in the HVAC system, possibly causing interior heating and cooling problems. Over time, the heater and air conditioner may also become damaged by

corrosion. Cabin air filters should not be cleaned and reinstalled. Instead, they should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or per the owner’s manual. Most filters are accessible through a panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or in the interior of the car. An automotive service technician can locate the cabin filter and replace it according to the vehicle’s owner manual. Some filters require basic hand tools to remove and install their replacement while others just need your hands.
