treated the audience to a senior medley of five special songs, concluding with “Like An Eagle.” Before conferring the diplomas, West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo took to the podium to speak to the Class of 2019. “There has been an incredible list of successes in academics, music, athletics and community service,” she said. “No one thing alone stands above the rest, but all have made us shine brightly. You have made a difference one act at a time through kindness, perseverance, resilience and empathy.”

As the students were called one by one to receive their diplomas, administrators and West Babylon Board of Education members lined up to offer their congratulations. After all the names were called, the graduates tossed their caps high into the air in celebration. Friends and family were then invited onto the field to join in the celebration.

The top 25 students in the Class of 2019 at West Babylon Senior High School were honored for their accomplishments during the second annual Blue and Gold Breakfast with the Superintendent on June 18. Hosted by West Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly and joined by district administrators, students were invited to celebrate their achievements in the

board of education room. The students were asked to choose a West Babylon staff member who has greatly impacted their educational career to join them as their guest for the breakfast. “Your character, resilience and perseverance shine through in everything you do,” said West Babylon Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly. “You have all excelled in the classroom, on the athletics field, in the arts, or in some

cases, all of these areas. You have all left the halls of West Babylon a better place for having been here.” Dr. Farrelly called each student up to be recognized individually and presented him or her with a gift. The student then invited their honored guest to be acknowledged as well. The top 25 gathered for one last group photo together before their upcoming graduation.

A Night Of Celebrations During the Babylon School District Board of Education meeting held on June 10, several staff members and students were recognized for their efforts. To begin the night’s recognitions, Babylon Junior-Senior High School student Tara O’Rourke was presented with a token of appreciation in honor of being awarded the Long Island Special Education Administrator Association Jodi Shapiro Memorial Scholarship. Additionally, Babylon Junior-Senior High School student Sonja Boyko was recognized for receiving the Long Island Special Education Administrator Association Student of the Year Award. A number of Babylon Junior-Senior High School student-delegates dedicated their time toward reporting on school news during the board of education meetings which took place throughout the 2018-19 school year. For their efforts, they were presented with tokens of appreciation courtesy of the board of education. Babylon Junior-Senior High School Class of 2019 valedictorian Dylan Pané and salutatorian Pavani Kumar were recognized for their accomplishments. Both students obtained this high honor for their exceptional academic record, commitment to success and diligent learning throughout their careers at the Babylon Junior-Senior High School. Babylon Junior-Senior High School mathematics teacher Robert Richardelli, who received the New York State Senate District 4 Teacher of the Year Award, was presented with a token of appreciation in recognition of his excellent teaching methods. The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.” Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can

construct a wooden ramp usually within a day or two of the start of the project. Are you freezing in the winter because of cold drafts from the windows? They’ll weatherize your windows and doors to keep you warm. If you have trip hazards like missing floor tiles or a high saddle between doorways, that’s an easy fix for the RTLI volunteers. These are just a few of things that RTLI does every day for eligible homeowners across our beautiful island! If you are in need and want to know if you quality for assistance, please call them at 631.777.7894. You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. If you’re an employer you can call them and see how you can sponsor a project and have your staff participate in a day of service. Creating A Personal Funeral Service: Part Two Last week we asked you to think about developing an idea that would contribute to a personal funeral service - which would have the greatest meaning to you and your family for your loved one. We stated that it did not matter whether you were planning a traditional funeral with a wake and church service or whether you were planning a direct cremation or direct burial with a memorial service at a later date. We feel from all our experiences those who take the time to think about a funeral service which recalls the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth into you and your family’s lives begin the mourning process with a much better focus. Pictures of times gone by are a wonderful reminder of a person’s contributions to joy and happiness. Letters written by friends co-workers and family also remind you of the joy the deceased brought into your hearts. Although flowers contribute beauty and are an integral part of the funeral process - instead of flowers you may wish to ask friends and family members to contribute pictures or a written story to the funeral service. Some of you reading this article may also wish to consider bringing pictures or a written story to a funeral instead of sending flowers, the family would greatly appreciate your efforts. You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister the eulogy can be delivered at the church during the funeral or at the memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before for several reasons, the most important being the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day, not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies. You would not want to postpone your funeral because another family took 45 minutes to eulogize a member of their family. Think about it, come talk to us and we will help you.

Regional Bike Share Program Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Zagster and Bethpage Federal Credit Union today announced the credit union's sponsorship of Suffolk County’s Bike Share program, Bethpage Ride, the first of its kind on Long Island.
