In March of 2020, when the pandemic really started to hit hard, Rhonda, along with the assistance of her board members, united to find solutions for the community despite what was going on. Grab & Go Breakfast in Rocky Point: EFF collaborated with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry of Strathmore bagels and a few

sponsors, to give-away over 300 breakfasts to families in need. 6 Week Marathon: March 29th was the beginning of a 6 week marathon of assisting front line workers with food. EFF and Rhonda did a Go Fund Me with local bagel store owner, Edward Henry to supply St. Charles, Mather and Stony Brook Hospital food every night. PPE Equipment Fundraiser: EFF collaborated with several Allstate Insurance offices to raise funds for PPE equipment. Over 2,000 masks were delivered to various hospitals, senior centers, nursing homes and fire districts. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. temporary authority to the IDA to issue grants and loans to businesses and small not-for-profit corporations negatively impacted by COVID-19. The IDA will provide the financial assistance through the Babylon Is Back Loan and Grant Program. “We thank our New York State Legislators as well as the Governor for acting on this important piece of legislation that provides the IDA with a new tool to continue supporting our local businesses get back on their feet,” said Matthew McDonough, the director of the Babylon Is Back Program. “With small businesses being the backbone of our economy, their success is our success and we will not stop our efforts to deliver for them.” Under the program, the IDA will provide grants to small business and not-forprofit corporations located in the Town up to $10,000. The proceeds must be used

for acquiring personal protective equipment or installing equipment necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The IDA has also made no interest loans, through the administration of the Babylon Is Back Loan and Grant Program, available to small businesses and small not-for-profit corporations located in the Town in an amount up to $25,000. To qualify for either a grant or loan, an eligible entity must establish that it was financially viable prior to March 7, 2020, the date, which Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Executive Order 202 declaring a disaster emergency. Eligible entities must also conduct business in the area served by the IDA, been negatively impacted by COVID-19, and have less than 51 employees. The IDA will consider the following factors in determining whether to award a grant or loan: • Creditworthiness prior

to March 7, 2020 • Negative impact the shutdown has had on its operations and finances • Planned use of funds • Community ties in the Town of Babylon • Assurance that efforts will be made to retain jobs during the time at which Executive Order 202 of 2020 remains in effect • Other sources of funding available Babylon businesses can apply by filling out an application on Babylonisback.com and submitting for consideration to the Babylon Is Back Emergency Assistance Program for consideration at info@ babylonida.org. Babylon Restaurants Get Free Mentoring Services

Local Restaurateur Provides Assistance to Restaurant Owners on Effective Business Rollout As part of the Babylon Is Back Program the Town of Babylon and local Restaurant Consultant, Matt Demar, have teamed up to provide restaurants, bars and other local retail shops with reopening mentoring services. These services are aimed at assisting these types of businesses to successfully navigate through the reopening process to maximize their earning potential while remaining in compliance with recommended safety guidelines. “Bars and restaurants make a significant percentage of our local economy as they collectively employ thousands of people and get residents and visitors to patronize other businesses

in the area,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “The economic ripple effect of bars and restaurants cannot be understated, which is why we are proud of the contributions Matt Demar has and continues to make to help this important economic sector.” The Town of Babylon— in partnership with the Babylon IDA and the Town’s local village mayors—announced its streamlined permitting process for restaurant owners to offer outside dining to patrons. Joined by local restauranteurs, the Town announced the changes made to make the form simpler as well as the amendments made to expedite the approval process. The purpose of the

partnering with Mr. Demar is to make local restaurant owners aware of the streamlined, free process so they are positioned to take advantage of indoor and outdoor dining pursuant to Phase II and III state guidelines. The services provided through the mentoring program consist of reimagining the bar/ restaurants available space to make way for operating with social distancing guidelines in place. In addition to help solidifying the physical setup of the individual bar/restaurant, Matt Demar is also providing businesses with marketing advice on how to effectively communicate with customers the steps that have been taken to ensure their safety while

also enjoying a night out. “During these devastating times, I want to be here to help restaurants and bars, and even retail, get back on their feet,” said Matt Demar, an industry leading Restaurant Consultant. “Flipping the switch from pre-COVID operations to a new normal is not as simple so we are offering assistance in developing plans for outside seating and how to best organize and structure inside seating to maximize flow. Dr. Ellice Vassallo has been a fixture in the West Babylon School District since she arrived in 1994. And she has certainly left her mark. Since that time, she has served as the principal of West Babylon Senior High School and has always put the needs of her students first. While her retirement is effective June 30, she will remain on board and serve as an interim principal for July and August until a new principal has been appointed. “I have worked with Dr. Vassallo for the past 14 years in West Babylon,” said West Babylon Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly. “Not only is she a dedicated administrator, but she always puts the needs of her students, staff and faculty first. She’s always been very supportive of our vision for the district and is a valued member of the Suffolk County Principals Association and our superintendent’s management team.” “On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to extend our sincerest thanks for a wonderful 26-year career with West Babylon,” said Board of Education president Lucy Campasano. “Dr. Vassallo has shown dedication to our staff and students and has made many friends along the way. I will miss working with her. I wish her health and happiness in her retirement.” “Every time I have witnessed Dr. Vassallo make a difficult decision, she would ask herself, as well as those around her, ‘What is in the best interest of kids?’ The answer to that question would drive her mindset,” said West Babylon Senior High School assistant principal Stephen O’Leary. After receiving her administrative certification, she was appointed dean of students for the district. Next, Dr. Vassallo took her administrative career to Plainedge School District, where she served as an assistant principal before coming to West Babylon. The Class of 2020 will be her 26th graduating class. “West Babylon has been my home away from home and my second family,” Dr. Vassallo said. “I will miss seeing students on a daily basis and my interactions with the staff. I am glad to have been a part of the community and the lives of all. It wasn’t just work.”

Just because she is saying goodbye to her role as principal, it doesn’t mean you won’t see Dr. Vassallo involved with students. “For the future, I hope to be able to continue to contribute to education in West Babylon or other communities,” Dr. Vassallo said. “My husband and I may do some traveling when it’s less hazardous. I hope to have more time for grandchildren and family as well.”

A few generations ago, dining out was an experience reserved for special occasions. The term “undertaker” was derived from the concept that we “undertake” all that needs to be done for a funeral service. Whether we direct funerals or we undertake all the responsibilities for the funeral arrangements, we need your help in making the funeral a meaningful experience. Although we become an integral part of your family during the funeral process, we do not always know you or the deceased on a personal level when you first call us. Our purpose as funeral directors is not to take away your pain; that is something we cannot do because you must work through your pain but rather our purpose is to make your life a little more bearable during the most difficult time of your life. It has long been our philosphy, and we have stated it in this column numerous times, that FUNERALS ARE FOR THE LIVING. The deceased, as sick as he or she was, has no more pain or suffering but only peace. We, the survivors, are left to grieve, mourn, and cope with our severe loss. The funeral, whether it is a traditional full service funeral or a direct cremation or burial with a memorial service, should be a personal tribute to the life of the deceased, which helps you remember the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth in this world to you and your family and friends.
