This year, the district made a donation of $1,450 to support the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver. This program provides wristband technology that can be worn by individuals with cognitive impairments who may wander. Celebrating Each Individual Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District showed just how special and unique each individual student is during a ceremony in their rock garden on June 20. Last year, the school created the rock garden, modeled after the uniqueness of the book “Only One You,” which stresses how everyone is unique and has something

different to contribute to the world. Each student colored their own individual rock during art class. This year, the kindergartners and new entrants to the school were welcomed into Santapogue by creating their own rocks. One by one, each student added their own painted rocks to the garden. “There’s only one you in

this great big world,” said Santapogue Elementary School Principal Jennifer Carere. “Make it a better place. Not only are these stones a colorful addition to our school, they can serve as a daily reminder to students that no matter what, they’re special and that they have the power to change the world.”

As a means of baking delicious treats and gaining real-world financial knowledge along the way, eighth-grade students enrolled in Jenna Schwartz’s Family and Consumer Sciences classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently participated in a fun and educational Food Truck Challenge. For the challenge, each group brainstormed and came up with a company name, along with a signature dish for their food truck. They then completed a business plan which included the recipe of their signature dish, a menu, a budget, team goals, and a marketing scheme that included a logo, slogan, color scheme and advertising techniques. The North Babylon Board of Education closed its 2018-2019 school year by celebrating student and staff accomplishments at its June 20 meeting. The district presented certificates to students recognized for their achievements in the Brookhaven National Science Fair. Student members of the Upstander Ambassador initiative were also recognized by the board, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly

and I can honestly say that each of you have gone above and beyond my expectations and I see a very bright future for not only you but for the students of the North Babylon School District who will benefit from your instruction for years to come,” Mr. Eschbach said. “Congratulations on reaching this point and milestone in your career. I look forward to our future together and wish you a long and happy career here in the North Babylon School District.” The festivities continued with recognitions of retirees and staff members celebrating their 25th year of service in the district. In addition, district parent John Heegan also received a certificate of appreciation for donating his time, materials and craftmanship to create the trophy cases at the entrance of the North Babylon High School. The district congratulates all who demonstrated hard work and determination throughout the school year.

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and

he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! A Night Of Celebrations During the Babylon School District Board of Education meeting held on June 10, several staff members and students were recognized for their efforts. To begin the night’s recognitions, Babylon Junior-Senior High School student Tara O’Rourke was presented with a token of appreciation in honor of being awarded the Long Island Special Education Administrator Association Jodi Shapiro Memorial Scholarship. Additionally, Babylon Junior-Senior High School student Sonja Boyko was recognized for receiving the Long Island Special Education Administrator Association Student of the Year Award. A number of Babylon Junior-Senior High

School student-delegates dedicated their time toward reporting on school news during the board of education meetings which took place throughout the 2018-19 school year. For their efforts, they were presented with tokens of appreciation courtesy of the board of education. Babylon Junior-Senior High School Class of 2019 valedictorian Dylan Pané and salutatorian Pavani Kumar were recognized for their accomplishments.
