DeLuca Earns ‘Be Victorious Award’ The North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr Elementary School is proud to announce that Nicholas Steil from Mr. Ierardi’s class is the 2019 recipient of the Victoria Vega “Be Victorious Award.” This award was created in memory of Mrs. Victoria Vega, who was a very

prominent social worker at the school. This honor is presented to a student who embodies the spirit of Mrs. Vega. Nicholas is polite, brave and mature, and carries a great attitude. He enjoys learning and being a part of the school community. He has shown all who

know him what it means to face adversity and pushes forward even during the most challenging of moments. His name has been engraved on the “Be Victorious” plaque, which is hung in the lobby of the school.

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater

income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

STUDENTS PERFORM LITERATURE OUT LOUD - In accordance with their literary studies, students enrolled in Stacey Aprea’s and Alyssa Freeman’s second grade classes at Babylon Elementary School recently displayed their knowledge of nonfiction works by portraying storylines through means of humorous theatrical performances. Love For Foreign Languages Due to their commitment to learning foreign languages, several students from the Babylon Junior-Senior High School successfully completed the requirements toward earning the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, and were treated to a ceremony held in the Babylon JuniorSenior High School library. In order to qualify for this prestigious award, students had to complete their ELA Regents with an 80 or better, complete

their 11th and 12th grade ELA classes with an 85 or better and achieve a 3 or higher on their English AP Exam in Language and Composition. Their requirements for World Language (either Spanish or French) included an 85 or better in a Checkpoint C level language course (College Spanish or French), along with a project which included a scholarly essay at the ACTFL Intermediate High Level that they presented

and defended to the foreign languages committee. Bucaro Earns STANYS Excellence In Science Award North Babylon School District is proud to announce that North Babylon High School senior Astrid Bucaro received the Science Teachers Association of New York State Excellence in Science award for her outstanding accomplishments in the subject. She was nominated by AP biology and science research teacher Ms. Annette Kuruc. Her accomplishments include being enrolled in the school’s science research program from grades 10-12, where she

did the majority of her research that focuses on the effects of nicotinamide riboside on the lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster and C. elegans respectively. This past year, she also conducted research in microbiology. She tested the effects of mannose on the growth of Streptococcus salivarius, which has the potential to be beneficial to oral health. This experiment was recognized at the Long Island Science Congress and ranked as Excellence with High Honors.

Astrid plans to continue her research in the fall, where she will attend Stony Brook University as a biology major on a pre-dental track. She will also graduate from North Babylon High School amongst the top 25 in her class as an AP scholar with honors. The district congratulates Astrid on her achievements and wishes her continued success throughout her college career.
