Students Named Local Winner, Runner-Up HPV Vaccination In ‘Be Pool Smart’ Poster Contest submitted to be used as part of a countywide message from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in its seasonal safety campaign. Entries were submitted by students from throughout Legislator Donnelly’s district and Lauren and Layla’s were selected as the top two. Lauren received a County Proclamation and Layla received a Certificate of Distinguished Achievement from Legislator Donnelly, who was joined by the students’ parents, teacher Ms. Lina Lenis, Principal Drew Olson and other North
Babylon school officials at the presentation ceremony, held at Parliament Place Elementary School on June 10. “The ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest is great way to remind and engage children about the importance of safety around swimming pools so they are truly able to just enjoy the fun of summer,” said Legislator Donnelly. “While there were many great entries, Lauren and Layla’s stood out, and I thank them for using their talents to help make this a safer summer for everyone.”

Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

BABYLON VILLAGE MARKS HISTORIC SITES - Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently joined the Village of Babylon Historical & Preservation Society and members of the Great South Bay Amateur Radio Club for the unveiling of two historical site plaques. The first plaque was placed in recognition of the Marconi Shed, where communications with ocean vessels was conducted back in 1902. The shed also played host to a number of training courses for radio operators. The second plaque commemorates the first 50 mile auto race sanctioned by the American Auto Club in 1900. Ironically, the winner drove an electric car and outpaced its gas and steam powered completion by nearly 15 minutes! Pictured: Wayne Horsley, Judith Skillen and other members of the Babylon Historical Society, along with John Neukirk from the Pommeroy Foundation who fabricated the signs, were all on hand to mark the occasion, as well as the Great South Bay Amatuer Radio Club, Mayor Mary Adams, and Trustees Frank Seibert and Dominic Bencivenga.
Autism And Children According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed
four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of
autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

The ensemble, called the Tritone Trio is made up of senior violinist Thomas Bruggemann, senior cellist Ruby Haberman and sophomore violist Gavin Aquino. They performed
the Schubert Trio in Bb (D. 471). All three students are accomplished members of the North Babylon High School music community. Aquino received a perfect score of 100 for his NYSSMA level six AllState audition. This fall, Bruggemann will be studying music education at SUNY Fredonia whereas Haberman will be studying
music education at Adelphi University. The LISFA hosts festivals throughout the year in Suffolk and Nassau counties. The organization brings together Long Island string teachers, students, parents and conductors to support and celebrate the power of music.

STUDENTS STEP UP TO THE PLATE IN CHALLENGERS DIVISION GAME On Sunday, June 6, the North Babylon Youth League partnered with the North Babylon High School Varsity Softball and Baseball teams to host the annual Challengers Division game. The Challengers Division is a team made up of children and young adults with special needs, many of whom are also students in the North Babylon Union Free School District. The student-athletes, along with their parents and coaches, enjoyed participating in the baseball game while being surrounded by smiles and support. Festival Of The Arts Show Moves Virtual And Outdoors This year, the 25th annual North Babylon Festival of the Arts District Art Show has been moved to a virtual setting due to the constraints of the pandemic. Nearly 800 pieces from K-12 students are being displayed online. Each piece of student art is a testament to the work of the District’s art department. Throughout
this past year, teachers have worked tirelessly to adjust the art education curriculum while caring for each students’ wellbeing. The Festival of the Arts District Art Show is a partnership between the North Babylon Union Free School District and the Town of Babylon. On Thursday, May 13, the
Town of Babylon held a one-day outdoor show at Town Hall to display the 125 pieces that were awarded ribbons by judges from local museums, schools and university programs. The District congratulates each student artist who participated in the annual show and those who were declared winners.

Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. Babylon Town, North Babylon School District Team Up To Display Students’ Work Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman DuWayne Gregory, Town Clerk Gerry Compitello and the North Babylon School District recently held the school district’s annual Art Show at Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst. Suffolk County
Legislator Tom Donnelly was also in attendance. Each year, the North Babylon School District displays artwork from their students in grades K-12 throughout the Babylon Town Hall building. This year, they were unable to do so because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and instead, the
town worked in conjunction with the district to host a one-day event where the artwork was displayed on boards around the lake at Town Hall. The winner of this year’s Supervisor’s Art Award was 12th grader, Ivette Sanchez.
Babylon Recognizes Local Student Who Published Children’s Workbook at 16 Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Babylon Town Board recently recognized a young town resident who published a children’s workbook earlier this year. Favour Okodogbe, 16, of Amityville, is a senior at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, and will be attending the California Institute of Technology on a full-ride this fall. Okodogbe will study Computer Science and Business Economics and Management, and is the first student from
her high school to attend Caltech. Okodogbe’s parents, Rev. Victor Okodogbe and Pastor Maryqueen Okodogbe are co-pastors of the Mount Zion Gospel Tabernacle Church in West Babylon. Earlier this year, Okodogbe published a children’s workbook, A Workbook Just For You, which contains material for any child between the ages of 1-7. From ABCs to 123s, the workbook covers all the basics of what a child needs upon entering school. Okodogbe skipped the 1st grade as a child and is now headed to college in
California at the age of 16. She published the book in hopes of inspiring children to learn like she did at a young age. BABYLON VILLAGE HOSTS SECOND PRIDE PARADE - The second annual Babylon Pride Parade took place along Deer Park Avenue on Sunday, June 6th! Braving the heat were nearly one thousand spectators and parade participants, including Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams, Deputy Mayor Frank Seibert, Trustee Robyn Silvestri, and New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso. The officials rode along the parade route in a float adorned with “Babylon Pride” with parade organizer Bob McKeown. Following the parade, several nearby streets were closed such that Pride festivities could continue within local businesses. In addition to the Village of Babylon and parade organizers, the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce played an integral role in making the event a success. The bills intend to designate all civil service Public Safety Dispatchers, Emergency Responders, Emergency Operators, Emergency Complaint Operators, and Emergency Service Dispatchers in New York State as first responders. This designation would make them eligible for a greater array of benefits and training opportunities, all of which are more than well deserved. A TRIBUTE TO A TRUE COMMUNITY SERVANT - On Saturday, June 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer joined the Madden family for the rededication of West Belle Terre Avenue in Copiague as “Chris Madden Memorial Way.” Chris Madden was a true friend and community leader throughout the Lindenhurst and Copiague communities up until his tragic passing earlier last year after contracting COVID-19. He served in a number of community service oriented groups, including the Copiague School Board, American Venice Civic Association, Kiwanis Club of Copiague, and Copiague Chamber of Commerce- all of which continue to feel his loss. It is in Chris’ memory, though, that they continue to move forward, for the betterment of their communities and the lives of their neighbors.
