HOMETOWN HEROES BANNERS GO ON DISPLAY - On Friday, May 28th Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Legislator Kevin McCaffery, Town Councilmen DuWayne Gregory, Tony Martinez and Terry McSweeney joined Lindenhurst Kiwanis Hometown Heroes Committee Members JoAnn Boettcher, Alice Cromarty, Paula Vidal, Ralph Somma, Jeanine Walther, Carolyn Mormino, and community members to celebrate the Hometown Heroes Banner Program. Through a partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst, the Town of Babylon facilitated banner installation throughout Babylon Township this year. Our Hometown Heroes Banners are displayed throughout the main streets thanks to all the hard work of the Kiwanis Club, Town of Babylon and community support.

Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict adoption policy to ensure
cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the right home

1st PRECINCT BROTHERHOOD HOSTS MEMORIAL – On Thursday, May 13th, the Suffolk County Police Department’s First Precinct Brotherhood hosted its annual memorial ceremony. The front lawn of the Precinct along Route 109 was adorned with a sea of American Flags blowing in the wind while Police Department officials payed homage to their fallen brothers and sisters. In addition to First Precinct patrol and specialized officers were representatives from police headquarters, local government officials, and the First Precinct Explorers - a youth organization for teenagers interested in serving their communities. The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipients can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. Currently, this farm has various upcoming community events planned! On June 13th and September 12th, they will
be holding a Line Dance event on the farm itself. For only $25/person, you can join Skip and the Country Rhythms Team for a fun afternoon of dancing, food and a raffle. All dances will be taught; you can arrive as early as 1:30 PM and dancing starts at 2 PM. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM starting June 12th running through October 10th! You will find organically-grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and it’s mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. Additionally, they suggest volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. West Babylon Public Library
On Sunday, May 16th, the Town of Babylon Volunteer Fireman’s Association hosted their annual memorial ceremony at the firefighters monument on the front lawn of Babylon Town Hall. Representatives from all eleven fire departments
within the Town were present to honor their fallen brethren. A single belled tolled as the names of firefighters lost in both 2019 and 2020 were read, as last year’s ceremony was unfortunately canceled due to COVID-19. Of special note during

Town of Babylon Firefighters Host Memorial Ceremony the ceremony were those volunteers lost to COVID-19, as well as the line of duty deaths suffered by the North Amityville and East Farmingdale Fire Companies.
