From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that

The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some

incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A ﬂower, a butterﬂy, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizen”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus fireman, policeman, and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorable discharged from the military the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veterans discharge papers for proof of service. This being done and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is open the entire casket may be draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket may be draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open and only the stars are to show when the flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole it is always to be placed at the left of the casket. Coca-Cola Scholar West Babylon Senior High School student Eric Donohue has been named a 2018 Coca-Cola Scholar. Each year, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation awards 150 scholars with a $20,000 scholarship to be used toward postsecondary education. This year, 150,000 applicants applied for

the 150 scholarships. The scholarship is based on merit, academics, extracurricular involvement, community service and leadership. After the initial application, the applicant pool reduces to about 2,000 students, then the next round of applications advance 250 students to an interview

process in which the 150 scholars are selected. Scholars attended a leadership weekend in Atlanta, Georgia, in April, where they participated in leadership development training, and visited attractions in Atlanta, including the World of Coca-Cola Museum.

BROADWAY COMES TO BABYLON: The Argyle Theatre

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick

off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. As the show opens with the song named in tribute, Runyonland, the lights come up on a truly entertaining evening of song and dance. In this production, the Argyle has built a true gem. With the stage filled with thousands of light bulbs, the only thing that shines brighter than the scenery - which mimics the streets of old Broadway - are the performances of their professional actors pulled fresh from the streets of NEW Broadway. Getting to this point was no mean feat for the Perlman family, who have put several millions of dollars and countless late-evening hours into the project. But if you talk to them, their passion for and commitment to the performing arts is infectious, which no doubt contributed to their ability to surround themselves with a hardworking team of
