Laboratory Tour Sophomores enrolled in Claire Birone’s Science Research Class at Babylon Junior-Senior High School, along with Nick Radesca, treasurer of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, recently toured Stony Brook University Cancer Center’s lab facilities for an in-depth look into this engaging career path. While there, the students were able to meet two leading researchers, Marcus Seeliger, Ph.D.,

assistant professor of pharmacology and associate director MD/ Ph.D. Training Program, and Lori Chan, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmacological sciences. Stony Brook Cancer Center’s affiliation with the Babylon Junior-Senior High School Research Program was facilitated by Stony Brook’s longstanding community relationship with the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, to invest

in novel research and engage future scientists in the ecosystem of cancer research innovation at Stony Brook. “The students had a wonderful day and definitely got a lot out of the experience, and the researchers were really impressed by the knowledge and passion of our students,” said Ms. Barone.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Exercise benefits both the mind and body. Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move. In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eye-opening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 percent of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24. Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise. Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.

1. Do what you enjoy.

Wasting time on activities that you don’t

enjoy may cause you to throw in the towel prematurely. Don’t base fitness choices around what worked for others; find things that work for you. Exercise physiologists at John Hopkins Weight Management Center say to start with an activity that you already enjoy, even if it’s aligned with the trend of the moment. Chances are you can find a class or make up a routine that works for you.

2. Tweak your playlist.

Music can improve performance during a workout and may actually take your mind off of strenuous or repetitive activity. Tunes also can be coordinated to the workout. Songs that feature lyrics such as run, punch, push or groove, can reinforce movements in the routine, offers the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Also, tailor songs to coordinate to the beats per minute of different activities. Strength activities and endurance activities can feature songs with higher BPMs.

People who were in the competitive groups in a study of 800 graduate and professional students at the University of Pennsylvania went to 90 percent more classes than those who exercised independently or were not competitive. The results were published in the journal Preventative Medicine Reports. Competition can be a driving factor in efforts to exercise.

Exercise regimens do not have to include running on a treadmill or lifting weights. All types of activities can work, and some may be more enjoyable to you than traditional exercises. Everything from martial arts to dance classes to volleyball can offer cardiovascular and muscle-building beneﬁts in a fun atmosphere.

You may be more inclined to workout if you do so outside. Activities such as hiking, snowshoeing, swimming and cycling on natural courses can be

Cataracts are the most common eye problem affecting vision. It is estimated that there are about 2 million cataract surgeries in the US each year. The treatment of cataracts has evolved over the years and now we can offer excellent visual outcomes to our patients with minimal risk and low incidence of complications. Inside the eye, there is a lens, which is supposed to be clear, like a camera lens. If this lens becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract. So, a cataract is just a cloudy lens. If there is minimal cloudiness, the vision will not be affected, and that eye may still see well. Sometimes a new eyeglass prescription may help someone see better if there is a mild cataract. Some conditions that will cause a cataract to progress are: age, certain medications, injuries, poorly controlled diabetes, and some inherited conditions. If a cataract’s cloudiness increases to a point where new glasses cannot improve the vision, then surgery is recommended. Some of the symptoms patients may have from a cataract are: difficulty driving and seeing signs, difficulty reading fine print, excessive glare and halos around lights when

driving at night, intolerable glare when in sun, difficulty reading the captions on TV, and inability to see the computer screen clearly. When surgery is recommended, there are many options our patients have so we can customize their visual outcomes. When a cataract is removed, an artificial lens implant is placed in the eye to restore the vision. Different types of implants are available, and we can correct a patient’s vision so they can read without glasses, see distance without glasses, or in some cases use special multifocal lenses so patients can see both distance and close-up without depending on glasses. When a patient becomes a candidate for surgery, many tests and measurements are done, (painless), and then reviewed by the surgeon and patient together to determine the appropriate type of lens for that patient. There are also lens implants that will correct astigmatism, an optical defect of the eye that is usually present throughout life, and treated with glasses or

contact lenses. Now, we can implant a special lens that will correct astigmatism, also to reduce the patient’s dependence on glasses, and to increase the quality of vision after surgery. Over the past 5 years, we have introduced in Suffolk County, the use of a special laser, (a femtosecond laser), to assist with surgery. This laser performs the most difficult and important part of the surgical procedure in about 1 second, reducing the risk of surgery and improving the outcomes of the procedure. The laser can also treat astigmatism, which allows our patients to see very clearly post surgery. Our experience with laser cataract surgery has been extremely positive, with our patients achieving exceptional visual results with very little risk of complications. The actual surgical procedure is performed in a cataract surgical center, as an outpatient. The painless surgery takes about 15 minutes, the patient has light IV sedation for comfort, then has a snack and is discharged to home. There is no patch or stitches and

most patients are able to drive the next day, and return to work in 2-3 days. Only one eye is operated on at a time, and usually, if there is a cataract in the other eye, its surgery is performed within 1-2 weeks. Our patients enjoy excellent vision after this low risk surgery. Of course, there is risk of complications and all precautions are always taken to ensure a successful outcome. Try something new. When trying to quit a bad habit, having something to do in its place can help. Human Services, more than 10 times as many American citizens have died prematurely from cigarette smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States combined. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time can cause cardiomyopathy, arrythmia, stroke and high blood pressure. People may recognize that smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are bad for them, but learning just how bad might provide the spark they need to change their ways. Breaking bad habits is seldom easy. But adults who commit to changing their ways can overcome even the worst of habits.

Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required. Taking to the Stage On April 27th, the Babylon Junior-Senior High School French National Honor Society hosted the second annual student/faculty talent show, bringing together members of the school community for a night of fun and fundraising. Teachers took to the stage with students as they sang, danced and raised $1,190 for Batay Baraguana, a small community of Haitian immigrants living in the Dominican Republic. Babylon Junior-Senior High School junior Payton Mathews travels

to the Dominican Republic every summer, rebuilding homes and schools in these communities. During the performances, teacher Melissa Anderson and student Anna Romero kicked the night off with a classic rock duet. Teachers Rebecca Olivieri and Ashley Tomei rocked out on some classic tunes, while Alexander Marange and Kyle Cropsey led the country band in a rousing rendition of “Country Roads,” featuring art teachers Cheryl Schweider and Patricia Stork. Alexa Grant also hosted a

country line dance. Throughout the course of the night, there were also poetry slam performances, classical ballet routines and power ballads. French 1a, French 2 and French 4 all engaged in a very tight lip sync battle, with French 2 coming out victorious for the second year in a row. The students also sat by the “Eiffel Tower” and sang in French, making the audience feel like they were on the banks of the Seine.

COMMITTING TO CONTINUE - Due to their unwavering dedication both in the classroom and on the athletic field, Babylon-Junior Senior High School seniors Erin Baldwin and Amy Baldwin recently committed to furthering their education at the University of New Haven this upcoming fall season. Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reﬂecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices ﬂowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception…

Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

The American Heart Association kick off cocktail party for the Hamptons Heart Ball was held on Thursday, May 10th and was hosted by event honorees Audrey and Martin Gruss in their NYC home. Event Distinguished Service Honoree, Dr. Apostolos K. Tassiopoulos was in attendance with wife Yianna as was event co-chair Jean Shafiroff, dressed all in red. Speaking about the mission of the American Heart Association, was Chairman of the Founders Affiliate Board of Directors, Bill LaForte. There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

www.FamilyAndChildrens.org FCA’s mission is to protect and strengthen Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and their communities. They are seeking volunteers in multiple areas of their organization. Volunteers are needed for their Friendly Visiting Program. They ask for one hour a week of your time to visit with an isolated, homebound senior for socialization and companionship (time is flexible). They will match you with a senior based upon your location and interests. Volunteers are also needed for their Ombudservice Program. Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. If you are interested in donating to this organization, they are seeking donations for their 2018 Summer Camp Fund. Your donation sponsors a fun and educational summer camp experience for a young person involved with FCA.
