Who Are Your “Toilet Paper & Paper Towels?” As we still find ourselves enduring this pandemic, we are slowly yet surely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. T h e r e is talk of re-opening businesses, heightened anxiety seems to be diminishing and the curve has begun to flatten. My thoughts and prayers remain with those in need, as well as those serving on the frontlines. We will continue to stand strong and one day this pandemic will fully be behind us.
This past week, our Publisher was able to purchase toilet paper and paper towels in bulk. He kindly left a large stash of these items in our office and let each employee know that they can take some home as needed. It was a selfless gesture and people appreciated it. However, when I got home I chuckled at the thought of it! Who would have thought that toilet paper and paper towels would ever be viewed as hot items and that employees would get excited over the distribution of paper products? Not me!
thought to these items before this pandemic, yet I use them everyday. Life would be difficult without them, yet I have only recently started to appreciate them now that they are hard to find. It’s just like the old saying, “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” If we change our thought process from items to people, which two people in your life do you rely on everyday? Who are your “toilet paper and paper towels?” Sometimes the people we love and rely on the most are the people we take most for granted.
As I take a few moments to reflect on who would be my “toilet paper and paper towels”, I find it’s hard to just choose two. There are so many people who I truly lean on, respect, love and treasure. Just like with those paper products, there are moments where I forget just how important they are to me.
So as we continue on, let us all take a moment to pinpoint who our “toilet paper and paper towels” The thought of toilet paper are and let them know just and paper towels as such how cherished they are. precious commodities got me thinking. “Across Long Island and throughout the country, medical professionals are working around the clock to help their communities get through the COVID-19 pandemic,” said David Zwaik, Partner, DJT Development. “As a small business in the community, we want to give back and show our gratitude by helping to provide a sanctuary at home for a local medical worker at the front-line of the crisis. This is how we can do our part to show our gratitude.” To enter the giveaway or get more information on how to enter visit the DJT Development Bathroom Remodel Giveaway event page here.

Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. If you are interested in fostering an animal, please visit: https:// www.animalleague.org/ get-involved/foster-careprogram/ We will continue to keep the public informed on our status through our website,
www.animalleague.org, and our social media platforms. We thank the community for their ongoing understanding and support. About North Shore Animal League America Animal League America has saved more than 1,000,000 lives. As the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization, we understand that a rescue isn’t complete until each animal is placed into a loving home. Our innovative programs provide education to reduce animal cruelty and advance standards in animal welfare. We reach across the country to rescue animals from overcrowded shelters, unwanted litters, puppy mills, natural disasters and other emergencies and find them permanent, loving homes. www.animalleague. org
How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?
Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The toughest part for pet lovers is that you must remember that you really should not be petting, snuggling, or sharing kisses or food with your pet! - Submitted by North Shore Animal League America www.animalleague. org Updates to this information can be found on the websites below: Centers for Disease Control https://www.cdc.gov/ coronavirus/2019-ncov/ summary.html World Small Animal Veterinary Association https://wsava.org/wpcontent/uploads/2020/02/ COVID-19_WSAVAAdvisory-DocumentFeb-29-2020.pdf

Your Pre-Need Funeral Experts Fully Provisioned for the Handicapped “Necessity never made a good bargain.” ~ Benjamin Franklin ~ For over 25 years we have advocated if at all possible that people make funeral arrangements in advance of their need.

Pre-need funeral arrangements allow individuals and families to examine their options. The opportunity to discuss with each other the type of funeral they want for each other. Although you can pay for a funeral in advance if you desire, you do not need to pay for a funeral to have the type of funeral you wish on record. Simply give us a call and we can discuss yout options over the phone or you and members of your family can come into the funeral home and we will gladly explain all your options. We can show you caskets and discuss costs with you so that you will be prepared. Our funeral directors are always prepared to help you. You need to be prepared to deal with funeral directors. Take our word for it - it is better to deal with them in advance before the “Necessity” than it is to deal with them under emotional and personal strain.

Making funeral arrangements at the time of need is one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do. You have a limited time to make emotional decisions, economic decisions, and personal decisions that may effect you and your family well in to the future. “Necessity” or limited time to make decisions, as Ben Franklin says, never made for a good bargain - meaning that you make economic decisions that will cost more than you would if you had more time to contemplate the cost of a funeral including cemetery, cremation, caskets, etc. This saying may well refer to emotional decisions as well as personal decisions. Making emotional decisions under undue stress and strain may skew your thinking, thus offending someone unintentionally or making the funeral unnecessarily difficult for you and your family because of interference from someone outside your immediate family. In legal terms, if someone else forces you to make a decision such as this, it is called duress and the decision can be rendered null and void, but if you make such a decision on your own, unfortunately, you will have to live with it.

North Babylon Administrator Receives Prestigious Award
WEST BABYLON NORTH - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY APRIL 29, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
The North Babylon School District is proud to announce that district Director of Student Data Services and Technology Daniel Rose was selected by Western Suffolk BOCES Model Schools Program 2019-2020 for the Administrator of the Year Award. Mr. Rose has been with the district for more than 10 years. He consistently and successfully engages stakeholders by promoting technological solutions throughout the district. With his yeoman’s work ethic and get-it-done attitude, Mr. Rose is responsible for many technology related achievements in the last few years. He values learning and he has consistently embraced initiatives that require his hands-
on leadership, including the adoption of Google Chromebooks throughout the district with a 1:1 model at the North Babylon High School and championing its expansion to the Robert Moses Middle School. He has developed the capacity by arranging faculty trips to other schools and even Google’s NYC headquarters. He directly coordinates the delivery of high-quality professional development workshops to faculty on topics ranging from Google Drive, eSchooldata, Google Classroom and Smartboards. Mr. Rose also leads the School Administrators Bargaining Unit and he has run the Alternative High School, but his leadership in the area of technology requires so many behindthe-scenes activities
that require immense amounts of attention to detail, collaboration and organization. He develops budgets and coordinates ordering and purchasing, while simultaneously looking for ways to improve systems and learning. In the last year under his leadership, the district received new digital copy machines and the district’s router/switches were also upgraded. Additionally, every classroom received training on how to use the new Smartboards. The district congratulates Mr. Rose on this achievement and applauds his dedication he puts toward his position. Mr. Rose will be recognized during a special ceremony scheduled in June.

Serve up homemade salsa this Cinco de Mayo
M
uch like St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by people with no trace of Irish heritage, Cinco de Mayo has become a day of celebration for people who do not trace their ancestry to Mexico. In fact, History.com notes that Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, where the day commemorates a symbolic yet not significantly strategic win by a heavily outnumbered Mexican army over French forces sent by Napoleon III to establish an empire on Mexican land. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to commemorate Mexican culture, including its much-loved cuisine.
Food is front and center at many Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Those who simply want to enjoy some homemade Mexican fare this Cinco de Mayo can try their hands at this recipe for “Fiery Corn Salsa” from Kelley Cleary Coffeen’s “200 Easy Mexican Recipes” (Robert Rose).
FIERY CORN SALSA Makes 2 cups 1⁄4 3
cup olive oil
tablespoons freshly squeezed
2
teaspoons minced fresh cilantro
3
tomatoes, seeded and diced
2
to 3 jalapeño peppers, seeded
11⁄2
cups corn kernels and diced
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, combine oil, lime juice and cilantro. Add tomatoes, corn and jalapeño to taste. Mix well until corn mixture is well coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour or up to 2 days. TIP In place of the corn kernels, you can used canned corn, drained; frozen corn, thawed; or corn from the cob, cooked on the stove top. For a smoky flavor, use corn grilled on the barbecue grill.

C
inco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 defeat of the French by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla. That battle occurred during the Franco-Mexican War, which was an invasion of Mexico launched by the French in 1861. The French invaded Mexico as a result of newly elected Mexican President Benito Juarez's decision to suspend interest payments on loans the country took out from foreign countries. France was one such creditor, but the French were not the only country to send troops to Mexico in response to Juarez's decision. Spain and Great Britain also sent troops to Veracruz, but both countries entered negotiations with Mexico and ultimately
withdrew their forces. However, France, under the leadership of Napoleon III, wanted to ensure access to Latin American markets. The French naval fleet's arrival in Veracruz forced President Juarez and his government to retreat. Months later, Juarez's force of 2,000 squared off against 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mexican forces claimed victory, losing fewer than 100 men while French casualties numbered nearly 500. While the victory itself did not prove a major win in the war against the French, it symbolized the strength of the Mexican people and served to strengthen the resistance movement. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico, but has grown into a popular celebration of Mexican culture in the United States.

to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues, and trying to cover all their expenses. Some rescue organizations are seeing adoptions and fosters up but this is because people are homebound right now. This leaves the shelters worried about what will happen to the animals when people go back to work. There are some people who fear for their own well-being and financial stability, which motivates them to drop their pets off at the rescue shelter. They feel they can’t adequately take care of their pets during this time, so they surrender them, putting more strain on shelters. Many shelters have to cancel fundraising events that usually bring in a lot of money to fund their programs. Additionally, some shelters offer spring break camps as a fundraising tool, and those had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Many rescue organizations and shelters are trying to help people care for their pets by providing them with food. This helps to keep the person from surrendering the animals to the shelter or rescue organization. Food donations to many shelters are down, simply because people are focused on their own families and are staying home. This leaves shelters scrambling to try to come up with enough money and food to continue feeding all of the animals, as well as providing them with any medical care they may need. “The pandemic has
created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need. Our programs have helped countless animals including military members. Without the support of the community, we will not survive and we cannot help the animals who so desperately need our assistance.” To help support Guardians of Rescue, make a donation online: https:// guardiansofrescue.org/ donate/. Guardians of Rescue provides assistance to animals out on the streets and investigates animal cruelty cases. They are located in New York, but they help animals in many places around the country. They are also instrumental in helping military members with their pets. To learn more, get involved, or to make a donation to support the Guardians of Rescue, log onto www. guardiansofrescue.org. About Guardians of Rescue Based in New York, Guardians of Rescue is an organization whose mission is to protect the well-being of all animals. They provide aid to animals in distress, including rehabilitation, assisting other rescue groups, and providing support to families, both military and not, who need assistance due to economic factors. Cancer, anxiety about starting a new path or chapter in your life is completely normal. Look forward to all of the positive things that may be in store soon enough.
Most of us are aware of the toll that the pandemic is having on humans around the country, and even around the world. Yet the economic impacts are being felt beyond humans. The animals are being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle in being able to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue has had an increase in dogs to care for, while their financial stability to do so declines. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed with the hardest hit people who can’t feed their pets and taking in abandoned animals left to fend for themselves which has become a big problem. Now, they are now turning to the people and asking that their organization be rescued amid the pandemic. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” The pandemic has impacted Guardians of Rescue and other animal shelters in a variety of ways, including: Due to so many people having their employment impacted by the virus, donations to the organization are down. This makes it difficult for them

Happy Mother’s Day! Stay Safe Everyone! “We first reached out to Diana Lambert and Seventh Street Music about 4 years ago. Until then, our son had been taking piano lessons from several local teachers but we had to travel to their houses and sometimes spent more time on the road than with the actual lesson. After being unable to find a teacher locally who would support Level 5 and 6 NYSSMA, it was time to look for a new teacher. We found Diana’s Music Lessons online and Diana matched us up with Dian Torees. Dian comes to your house, supports 30, 45 or 60 minute lessons, will teach what the client wants and all for a very reasonable rate with discounts for multiple lesson plans. But it gets better, Dian was able to help my son achieve an Outstanding score on each of three NYSSMA solo competitions (one level 5 and two level 6). This gained him acceptance into the TRI M music honor society. Our son became so proficient that he was asked to accompany various choirs and coral ensembles at his High School in both his Junior and Senior years. Dian was as professional, accomodating and talented an instructor as you could ever wish for. Thanks to Diana and Dian for everything you did for us and especially for what you did for our son who will never forget you or stop playing piano!” ~ Edward & Anne Marie

6 Steps To Get Your CARES Act Funds Fast (StatePoint) Millions of U.S. residents will receive government stimulus payments (also known as Economic Impact Payments) under the CARES Act. Payments to eligible recipients will arrive by either direct deposit or a paper check. Here are some helpful tips from Wells Fargo that may help you access your funds as soon as possible. 1. Determine if you qualify for a government stimulus payment. Your eligibility is determined by the federal government. To learn more about eligibility
and payment amounts, visit IRS.gov/coronavirus under the “Economic Impact Payments” link. 2. Learn how you’ll receive your stimulus payment. If you filed a federal tax return in 2019 or 2018 and typically receive your tax refund through direct deposit, your government stimulus payment will likely arrive the same way. If you did not file a tax return or have not given the IRS your direct deposit account information in the last two years, you’ll likely receive a U.S. Treasury check in the
mail 3. Set alerts for your government stimulus payment deposit. Use mobile and online banking to check your account balances from home so you know when the stimulus payment is deposited. Set a deposit alert on your checking or savings account to be notified once you receive a direct deposit. 4. Know where you can deposit a paper check. If you have a checking or savings account, you may be able to make a mobile deposit if your bank has
a mobile app, or make a deposit at an ATM. Make sure to check your bank’s applicable daily and monthly mobile deposit limits. 5. Look before you leave. Make sure to verify if your local bank branch is open, as they may have reduced hours or services.
In the case of Wells Fargo, customers can go to the Wells Fargo branch locator for the latest information on closures, hours and services by visiting wellsfargo.com/ locator/. Customers can also visit Wells Fargo’s COVID-19 resources and support page for additional
information at wellsfargo. com/coronavirus. 6. Beware of scams. If you receive a suspicious email or text message, don’t respond, click on links, or open attachments. Check out IRS.gov for more tips to help avoid becoming a victim of fraud.
In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials - resulting in shortages. Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers? The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they
have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice. Hot Water And Soap The reason handwashing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen Peroxide As people clear isopropyl
(rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemicallybased cleansers for other home tasks.

WEST BABYLON NORTH - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY APRIL 29, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
Over $550,000 Raised in Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge Long Island Community Hospital has raised over $550,000 toward its $1,000,000 goal for the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge within ten days of announcing the campaign. The matching grant is made possible by the KnappSwezey Foundation, Island Outreach Foundation and Gardener Foundation to help raise vital funding for the community hospital in their fight against COVID-19. “The outpouring of support has been humbling, to say the least. In a short time our community has donated over $275,000, which has been generously matched by the Knapp family to reach over $550,000,” said Richard T. Margulis, President and Chief Executive Officer at
LI Community Hospital. “Protecting our staff and responding to our patients needs during this crisis remain the top priority, especially as we see high numbers holding steady, and the Knapp Family COVID-19 Challenge is helping us meet these needs.” On April 8th, the Knapp Family announced that they would match every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $500,000 to directly purchase vital personal protective equipment (PPE), supplies, equipment and other items necessary to keep healthcare professionals safe during this pandemic. These purchases are ongoing and include masks, gowns, eyewear and other protective gear in high demand.
“These past few weeks have been extraordinary for us all. Everyone has been touched by this virus. It knows no boundaries. Long Island Community Hospital is bracing for the wave, and if we don’t give now, in the midst of the pandemic, then when?,” says Michele Knapp, Board Member at LI Community Hospital and Chair of the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge. “We need to all become part of the solution in this unprecedented time.” “The Knapp family’s most recent commitment is a testament to their steadfast support of our hospital. We knew the campaign would need to be completed in record time but we couldn’t have imagined the success we’d see in just ten days,”
said Rachel E. Schnabl, Vice President and Chief Development Officer at LI Community Hospital. Mrs. Schnabl continued, “Time is of the essence and our community has responded and continues to respond to provide our healthcare heroes with the vital supplies.” With the number of COVID-19 cases in Suffolk County surpassing 25,000 and growing, LI Community Hospital has transformed the hospital to meet increased demand. In response to the influx of COVID-19 patients over the past few days and weeks, the entire hospital staff is working diligently to meet the needs of vulnerable patients while protecting front-line healthcare professionals. “In the midst of this crisis,
it’s truly overwhelming to see that generosity shines through. Now, more than ever, we need the support of our community and our community has responded,” said Mr. Margulis. The Knapp Family implores you to join in the fight against COVID-19 and help us save lives today. To make a donation, please visit www.licommunityhospital. org and click on “Giving To Our Hospital” or call 631.654.7708. Long Island Community Hospital has served this richly diverse region as a patient-first community hospital for more than 60 years. We are 100% focused on the community and committed to providing quality care with our greatly enhanced services
reflected through the Knapp Cardiac Care Center - our highly advanced heart disease diagnosis and treatment facility, our new modern surgical pavilion, our level III trauma center, and our hightouch services including women’s imaging, sleep laboratory, wound care and more. These services are delivered with the highest level of compassion by our LI Community Hospital staff – Long Islanders with an unmistakable mix of courage and heart who care about the people right here in our community and whose sole purpose is to provide personalized comfort.
Saving Money In A Seller’s Market: Three Tips (NAPSI)—If you’re planning—or even just dreaming—of buying your first home, a few tips and trends may prove intriguing. According to the National Association of Realtors, home prices are up and accelerating because there are more buyers than homes for sale. Here are three tips for first-time buyers looking to purchase in this seller’s
market: Know your budget and stay within it: Before you start shopping, find out what you can afford with a preapproval from a lender so you know how much money you can borrow. When determining your budget, consider the other costs of home ownership, including taxes, insurance and utilities. When listings are scarce, home prices tend
to rise as bidding wars drive them higher. Don’t get caught up competing against other buyers and counteroffering above what you can comfortably afford. Winning a bidding war could feel like losing if you end up spending above your means. Stay patient and walk away if the price surpasses your budget. Identify needs versus wants: No home is perfect and many people have to
compromise on features when buying an existing home. At the same time, you don’t want to end up settling for a house you don’t love. Separate and maintain your focus on what you really want in a home against what you can live with (or without). A home in a certain school district or close to your job most likely falls into the former while a kitchen with a fancy
backsplash is something you can add at a later date. Work with a Realtor who knows the area: When housing supply is tight, an attractively priced home will likely draw multiple offers. Find a Realtor with experience serving clients in your desired area. He or she can provide invaluable market information, including how fast homes are selling and for what price. A Realtor can also
help you with a negotiation strategy to make your offer stand out. To find one, go to www.realtor.com/ realestateagents and enter the zip code of the area where you want to buy. Buying a home is arguably the most important financial decision you’ll make in your life. Working with a Realtor and following this advice can give you the advantage you need.

The AA Team wishes to THANK all healthcare workers (nurses, doctors, EMT’s, EMS and paramedics etc.) as well as all first responders who put themselves in harms way working tirelessly and unselfishly to keep us safe and healthy. There are no bigger heroes. CENTURY 21 AA Realty remains dedicated to working hard for our clients and supporting our community. Our agents and staff are adjusting and adapting to the changes caused by this pandemic to maintain a level of service our clients deserve and have come to expect. We realize that there are more pressing issues for most people to deal with right now than real estate. There are those however who for their reasons need to sell, buy or rent now. We are still taking listings, hosting virtual showings and negotiating transactions. We are closing sales while following social distancing requirements. Our team is available by phone, text or video conference. Please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are happy to host a personal video conference and send electronic documents. CENTURY 21 AA Realty stays up to date with the ever-changing situation and we are following the procedures and protocols outlined by our medical experts. We continue to consult with our clients and try to be as responsive as possible to their needs.
