JFK’S BLANKET DRIVE HELPS LOCAL PETS IN NEED - The fourth and fifth grade student council members at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently ran a blanket/towel drive for local pets in need. All the items collected will be donated to the Babylon Animal Shelter. The students collected gently used towels and blankets from March 28 through April 6. On April 6, the student council members gathered in the cafeteria to pack up the items. songs and the great Hanks who made them. “Obviously it was the iconic status of Hank Williams that made so many country singers go by Hank,” said Gayden Wren, the musical-theater veteran who performs as Tennessee Walt. “That’s ironic, because Williams himself wasn’t named Hank or Henry—his birth name was Hiram. The songs in this show span the period from 1948 to the present day, and about half of them are by Williams, both classics like ‘Cold, Cold Heart’ and ‘Jambalaya,’ but also some little-known gems, including one or two that Williams never recorded, that survived only in his demos. “When you’re listening to Hank Snow or Hank Thompson, you’re listening to people who were Williams’ contemporaries, but who hit their stride only after his death in 1953, and who were deeply influenced by his songs,” Wren continued. “Later artists such as Hank Locklin and Hank Cochrane offer a chance to explore the Hank Williams legacy, and this show includes plenty of examples of classics by all the Hanks, including Snow’s ‘I’m Moving On,’

Thompson’s ‘Perfect Strangers,” Cochrane’s ‘I Fall to Pieces,’ Garland’s ‘Sugarfoot Rag,’ Locklin’s ‘Send Me the Pillow That You Dream On’ and many more. “This isn’t what people may think of when they hear the words `country music,’” Wren said. “It’s voice and piano, not fiddles and steel guitars, and I won’t be yodeling. And this isn’t the country of Toby Keith or Carrie Underwood—it’s the older, purer country music that inspired them and everybody from Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley to Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Ringo Starr. There are plenty of iconic names in the history of country music—Carter, Rodgers, Williams and Lynn come to mind—but there’s one name that towers above all the others: Hank. There have been more country stars named Hank than Joe or Johnny or Mary or Sue, and their impact has been remarkable. ASL REMOTE TEACHERS MAKE SPECIAL VISIT - American Sign Language students, members of the ASL Club and ASL Honor Society at Babylon Junior-Senior High School had a special visit on March 28 from their remote ASL teachers from Oneida-Herkimer Madison BOCES in upstate New York. Babylon ASL students have been participating in distance learning with their teachers for the past few months. The teachers came for the first in-person visit to meet with students to create a personal connection. To close out the day, the members of the ASL Club and ASL Honor Society held a roundtable discussion with the teachers to talk about the deaf community and their college/career plans. North Babylon Student A 2022 Coca-Cola Scholar

The North Babylon Union Free School District is excited to announce that North Babylon High School senior Michael Fuentes has been named a winner in the 2022 CocaCola Scholars Program. He is among 150 students nationwide to be selected for this distinction and received a $20,000 college scholarship.

More than 68,000 applicants and 1,617 semifinalists nationwide participated in the scholarship program. Michael earned the winning title after advancing to the regional finalist level of the competition and participating in a 20-minute interview with the program’s Regional Interview Committee.

After showcasing his leadership skills, academic achievements and community service, Michael was officially selected as a 2022 CocaCola Scholar. The district is proud of Michael’s achievement and applauds his continued dedication to his academics and extracurricular activities.

In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by
