Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-proﬁt runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future.

Equally as sad, Long Island, like many communities across the country, is in dire need of foster parents for children from birth to the age of 18, whether these caregivers have informal or formal custody of children. Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.” Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home. They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements. Designated kinship foster parents receive various types of ﬁnancial support. They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Families have access to such Hope For Youth services as mental health, ChildParent Psychotherapy, Children and Family Treatment Support Services and the Health Home program. In addition, Hope For Youth partners with the “Parenting the Second Time Around” (PASTA) team from the Riverhead-based Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County to help grandparents navigate the educational, medical and legal systems to get the support and resources they need. Their experts assist with such challenges as discipline, child development, legal concerns and rebuilding a family. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County also provides support groups for both adults and children, plus monthly social activities for families. North Babylon Applauds Third Grade Mathletes

Families and community members of the North Babylon Union Free School District gathered in the auditorium of the Robert Moses Middle School to spotlight the mathematical achievements of Ms. Staci Manning’s third grade class during the March 15 board of education meeting. Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach introduced the Parliament Place Elementary School students and spoke of their success in the New York State Mathematics initiative First in Math. This program focuses on

improving students’ math fluency through games and competitions. Ms. Manning hit the ground running once the program was implemented and her students dedicated themselves to working on fact fluency, word problems and procedural fluency. In December 2021, they led the charge and helped the district solve 1 million math problems in First in Math. As a result, this class had Parliament Place school finish sixth out of 663 schools in the state. For all third grade classes, they are now second in New York State

and 21 in the entire county. In addition, seven students in the class earned the Grand Champion title. This highest level of achievement is earned after students collect more than 10,000 stickers, which is equivalent to 30,000 math problems or more. Along with earning the Grand Champion title, Adnan Hossain is also first in New York State as a top performing third grader in First in Math. The district applauds all students on this wonderful accomplishment and is proud of the work they have contributed to the program.

Donate To Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly’s Pet Food Drive Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 11th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares.org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have generously

donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code requirements, all pet food must be unopened

and in original packaging.
