The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the 29th annual Spring Egg Hunt at Belmont Lake State Park will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 12:00pm-2:00pm. There is no rain date for this event. The egg hunts will take place on the open field and will begin at 12:15pm. Additional hunts will occur at 15-minute intervals with the last one at 1:45pm. The hunts will be divided into three age categories: ages 4 & under; ages 5 & 6 and ages 7-9. There is a 3-egg limit per child per hunt to ensure everyone goes home with a special treat. Please bring a small bag or basket for your child to put their eggs in.

In each of the schools around the district, students, staff and community members donated essential items, filling more than 100 boxes with various goods to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church. The Charity of the Month for April is

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org While vast numbers of young people on Long Island are fortunate to be raised in stable and well-functioning households, the sad truth is that many children and adolescents in Nassau and Suffolk counties face major difficulties as they grow up, confronting challenges such as substance use, mental health disorders, incarcerated parents, child abuse and trauma, amongst other issues. Fortunately, a number of highly committed non-profit organizations in our area are working every day to provide those young people with opportunities to improve their circumstances and to put their lives on a strong and promising footing. Hope for Youth, is one of these outstanding organizations. Founded in 1969, Hope for Youth is a private social service agency that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of children, adolescents and families on Long Island. Based in Amityville, the organization provides residential care, foster care, preventive services and out-patient programs that help young people become self-sufficient and achieve their full potential. Remarkably, through its multiple residential and out-patient facilities and programs, Hope for Youth impacts the lives of more than 14,000 local children, teens and families each year.

To fulfill its vision of offering residential, community-based alternatives for emotionally troubled children, Hope for Youth first opened a group home in Bellmore to serve adolescent males. Since then, the agency, which now has a staff of 175 employees and interns, has grown to offer a range of programs that provide a full spectrum of services, all reflecting a detailed and closely monitored hierarchy of needs of Long Island’s youth and families. While the bulk of Hope for Youth’s funding comes from contracts with Suffolk County, Nassau County and New York State, donations from supporters also serve as a key component of its budget. Hope for Youth also depends upon support from volunteers from the community, who help with administrative support, community outreach, fundraising, residential programs and event planning. The visionary founder of Hope for Youth was the late Nassau County Family Court Judge Elizabeth Bass Golding, a pioneer activist for children’s rights. Judge Golding had learned that, in the mid 1960s, half of the children in the state’s psychiatric hospital system were there simply because of the lack of suitable, viable, community-based home alternatives for youth. A problem solver, the judge proceeded to spearhead a

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May. Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 11th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www. licares.org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District

have generously donated to this annual drive. All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets. Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code

requirements, all pet food must be unopened and in original packaging. For more information or to make an appointment to donate outside of these hours, call (631) 854-4433. “Now, more than ever it is important to remember that hard times impact all members of the family,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Families shouldn’t have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their beloved pets. KNOCKING DOWN HUNGER - Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District held a cereal box domino challenge to “knock down hunger.” The school collected boxes of cereal to donate to the West Babylon School District food pantry. As a school, there were 370 boxes collected in total. On March 9, the boxes were set up in the hallway as dominos that were knocked down as the students watched as they fell. Class Of 2022 Valedictorian And Salutation On March 11, Babylon School District announced the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2022. In a small ceremony in the school’s library, Babylon Junior-Senior High School Principal Al Cirone recognized the top two students of the class. Joined by their families, valedictorian Kenneth Graham and salutatorian Alexis Lewis

were recognized for their exemplary achievements both in and out of the classroom. Throughout his high school career, valedictorian Kenneth Graham has participated in numerous activities in and out of the classroom. He is a member of the Student Council, National Honor Society, Class Cabinet, DECA and science research. He also plays on the lacrosse and

golf teams. Graham is undecided on his choice of college at this time. Salutatorian Alexis Lewis serves at the president of DECA and is a member of the National Honor Society, Business Honor Society and Social Studies Honor Society. Outside of school, she is a volunteer at Stony Brook Hospital and a volunteer student teacher at Center Stage Dance. She is also the recipient of gold

Students Take Stage In LISFA Festival

North Babylon High School students were honored with the wonderful opportunity to perform in the Long Island String Festival Association Chamber Festival on March 20. Selected students were Gavin Aquino, Ashley Campos, Wilensky Coleau, Spencer Mace and Amanda

Quintanilla. They were coached by members of the Bryant Park Chamber Players and performed Mozart’s Quintet K515 Mvt3 in this year’s concert at the Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University. The LISFA hosts festivals throughout the year in Suffolk and Nassau

counties. The organization brings together Long Island string teachers, students, parents and conductors to support and celebrate the power of music. The district applauds these students and is proud of the hard work they contribute to their musical talents.
