MAKING MUSIC AT TOOKER - Students in Mrs. Gottlieb’s after-school enrichment program at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District have been hard at work engaged in handson learning projects. In early March, the club strummed out a tune on their handmade instruments with the assistance of Mrs. Mauner and Mr. DeBiccari. The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. They are equipped to serve those with Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health Disorders, Autism, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, Traumatic Brain Injury, Sensory Impairments, Chronic Physical/ Medical Conditions and Tourette Syndrome, among others.

On Feb. 1, three Science Olympiad teams from the Senior High School competed at the Eastern Long Island Regional Tournament at Hauppauge High School. West Babylon brought home 13 medals for scoring in the top 10 out of 53 teams for individual events. They also placed sixth overall in the region, securing a place at the states in March. BACCA and The Josephine Herrick Project Present Seeing Differently A Veteran’s Photography Exhibit March 18 thru April 4 Viewing Hours: Monday thru Friday 9:30AM to 3:00PM Saturday, April 4th from 10AM to 2PM Admission is Free *** Babylon Old Town Hall 47 West Main Street Babylon, NY 11702 “Seeing Differently” The exhibition draws from the images of five Long Island-based veterans who visited Gettysburg over three days in September 2019. They came for a residential photography workshop put on by the Josephine Herrick Project with the in-kind support of the Gettysburg Foundation. The veterans are alumni of the Josephine Herrick Project’s free photography programs, most are Vietnam veterans and most suffer from PTSD from the violence they saw and experienced while in the military or suffering from chronic pain. The veterans are mainly Long Island based. More Information on the JHP Founded in 1941, Josephine Herrick Project (JHP) began as a volunteer service organization, providing free photography

programs to underserved audiences, with a focus on disabled war veterans. Today, Josephine Herrick Project’s participants include but are not limited to disabled veterans and other adults with physical and/or other disabilities; youth on the autism spectrum or with behavioral/developmental disabilities; and youth impacted by poverty. JHP believes that cameras are transformational tools that encourage people to see things differently and give a voice to all. Participants photograph their communities with the help of professional photographers, promoting advocacy, self-confidence, and awareness of and the potential to influence the world around them. About the Project In Fall 2019, the veterans (attendees of this workshop in Gettysburg) worked with leading professional photographer (Alberto Vassari) to develop their skills and use cameras to explore a place that was both very familiar and deeply personal to each. Over the weekend the veterans visited the museum, and toured the battlefields. They stayed in historic houses and had the

opportunity to explore the fields. For many veterans, irrespective of which part of the country they come from or their background, Gettysburg holds enormous spiritual meaning – a communion with each other and with those who went before. In our age, the photograph informs how we think about things in our world, from the way we are affected by war, famine and crisis, to how and what we do in our daily lives. It is today the most universal, democratic, and accessible art form and means of communication. It allows any photographer to frame their own narrative and to share it with others. The first day of spring is widely associated with a spirit of rejuvenation. But flowering plants and warming temperatures are not the only reasons to celebrate the arrival of the spring equinox. BABYLON TOWN OFFICIALS CONGRATULATE NEW EAGLE SCOUT Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terry McSweeney to honor Jacob Martin of Boy Scout Troop 399, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. A Court of Honor ceremony was held for Jacob at North Babylon High School, where the officials congratulated him on his achievement and wished him the best in his future. For his Eagle Scout project, Jacob doubled the beehive capacity of the apiary at Homecoming Farm in Amityville to support the farm and neighboring ecosystem. Lindenhurst. The annual Blue and Gold Banquet is held to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America in February 1910 and also can serve as an Arrow of Light Ceremony, where cub scouts make the

transition to boy scouts. Supervisor Schaffer and Deputy Supervisor Martinez congratulated the scouts on taking the next step in their scouting journey.

Ceremonial Groundbreaking For The Winters Centers For Autism On Thursday, April 2, World Autism Day, the Winters Family Foundation will break ground on the 14,000 square-foot Winters Center for Autism at 9:45 a.m. at 92 Mahan Street, West Babylon. The new state-of-theart facility will include vocational and life skills teaching areas, a high-tech

conference and education meeting room, recreational spaces for health and wellness activities and a community café providing a welcoming environment for program participants and the community. The Center will help to create jobs and provide job placement services for people with autism. The Center will

also assist caring Long Island employers develop and implement job-training programs for adultswith autism. Featured events and speakers include: • Mr. Joseph (Joe) Winters, Winters Family Foundation President • The Honorable John Flanagan, United States
