Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends
The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need
of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Spinning Spirals As part of a new multifaceted initiative designed to continue developing students’ skills in STEAM, the North Babylon School District collaborated with the Heckscher Museum of Art and brought the museum to the classroom. As part of the program, sixth-graders at the middle school created stunning
pieces of art under the leadership of museum educators Joy Weiner and Kristina Schaff, who visited the school to work directly with students, and art teachers Lisa Gregorek and Paul Guadagnino. Following their exploration of mandalas and spinning spirals in art history, students created their own dynamic circular designs
through painting and collage. On March 1st, Heckscher representatives visited the middle school to observe the incredible completed works of art with the students who created them. The spinning spirals will remain display on the NEW SCOUTS WELCOMED - On February 17th, Boy Scout Troop 399 welcomed hallway walls throughout the school for the rest of 10 new Scouts from Pack 112 into the troop. The boys received their Arrows of Light, which is earned as the highest award of the Cub Scouts, at their Blue and the school year. Gold Ceremony and then bridged over into their new troop. They were then inducted into Troop 399 and joyfully welcomed by leadership and scouts. Good luck and great adventures to those in their scouting careers.
