Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.

The Joy Animals Bring Does anything else even need to be said? Animals bring us so much joy, unconditional love, centeredness and clarity. Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog. I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of. I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my

lap. I named him Francis Albert after Frank Sinatra, of course, which later incarnated to Frankie. Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave? Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior. In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story. As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and

running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face. Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can. I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him. These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness. Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

Pets can help prevent loneliness Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can beneﬁt greatly from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely, compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion.

Issues relating to the heart affect both men and women, and an estimated 15 million adults in the U.S. have coronary heart disease (although many don’t know), the most common type of heart disease. Heart disease is not exclusive to the United States, as the Heart Research Institute says that every seven minutes in Canada someone dies from heart disease or stroke. Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize their heart health. Embrace physical activity. Regular, moderate exercise is great for the heart. It can occur at the gym, playing with the kids outdoors, taking the dog on long walks or hikes, or even taking the stairs at work. Any way you slice it, your heart craves a minimum of 20-30 minutes of physical activity per day. Student entrepreneurs from Babylon High School made an impressive showing at the Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Regional Conference and Exhibition this month. The Babylon student-created business Wave Works competed against more than 50 local districts, earning one gold and one silver medal for their impressive performance. The teen business leaders of Wave Works are Katherine Bencivenga, Kyra DeVoe, Matthew Ficken, Ian Watral, Kate Watral and Brendan Watt. I Love You was organized by Brooke DiPalma, a 22-year-old college graduate whose father committed suicide in 2010. DiPalma, who was 11 at the time, is open about her struggles with the tragic event and
