The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonproﬁt organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

How you can get involved: If you or someone you know would like to register for their spring program, you can! Registration is now open and runs through February 27th. Please visit www.gotrlongisland. org/register-now to register. Also, GOTR is still looking for volunteer coaches! Coaches are needed one or two days a week for the 10-week session. Volunteers do not need to be a runner or having coaching experience, since the organization provides all training and materials. All you need is time, enthusiasm and a desire to make a diﬀerence! The Babylon Village Arts Council invites Long Island artists (all media) to exhibit their work at its Thirteenth Annual Outdoor Art Exhibit entitled “Art by the Falls” to be held on May 16, 2020. North Babylon students had the wonderful opportunity to represent the district during LISFA’s Suffolk Intermediate Festival on Jan. 25. Held at Northport High School, several fifth and sixth grade students from across the district participated in the prestigious festival,

including Eren Alptekin, Cynthia Chen and Marilin Chicas from Marion G. Vedder Elementary School; Jason Cusumano and Kendel Wilson from William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School; and Robert Moses Middle School’s sixth grader Melanie Kamalic and eighth grader Andrea

Ramirez. Students were selected based on their exemplary recordings of pieces they performed during a rigorous audition process, as well as teacher nomination. The district congratulates all those who were selected for these prestigious events.

The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind’s muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book. According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www. thehealthy.com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently announced the installation of a public videophone for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Essentially a webcam, the device allows members of the public to call emergency services, family members and others to use sign language. Councilmen Terry McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory were also in attendance. “On behalf of Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the rest of the Town Board, I am thrilled to provide another helpful tool to those with

disabilities in the Town of Babylon,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. “We have made it a priority to ensure that all of our facilities are accessible and welcoming to everyone in our community, and this videophone will do a great job of advancing that,” he added. The videophone came to Babylon after Fred Greenspan of Deaf Sensitivity Training made Supervisor Rich Schaffer aware of the free device and installation. After a few months of coordination, the system was installed at no cost to the town.

Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful

Innovative Fitness Programs For Seniors

Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

It is important to stay active and eat healthy foods in an effort to promote fitness and well-being. This is especially true for seniors, many of whom lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles as they age. The American Heart Association says adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, and a Harvard University study says that exercise can be an insurance policy for heart health. Today’s seniors have more fitness options at their disposal than ever before. SilverSneakers® is the leading community fitness program for older adults in the United States. SilverSneakers® members can participate in specially curated programs at participating gyms and community centers across the nation. According to the organization, there are more participating fitness locations available than there are Starbucks® coffee establishments. Classes are fit for everyone, no matter their experience level. Those concerned about gym costs

may find that SilverSneakers® already is included in their Medicare Advantage plan for no additional cost. Plus, there is access to healthy living discounts from participating businesses. Canada has begun to develop its own senior-centric fitness programs. The Healthy, Safe and Strong group exercise program is an introduction to safe exercises available for adults age 60 and older in the province of Ontario. The program can help develop better stamina, maintain or improve balance and increase strength and endurance. StrongerU Senior Fitness is a relatively new program of pre-choreographed group fitness offering instruction in four program types: cardio, strength training, stretching, and circuit training. The program addresses a need in Canada for quality and consistent senior fitness programing. As studies show that engaging in physical activity is the most effective way for aging men and women to stay healthy, more adults may be compelled to join fitness groups that cater to the 50-and-over market.

Town of Babylon Commemorates Black History Month Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Babylon Town Board, fellow local officials and community leaders for the town’s 32nd annual Black History Celebration, BABYLON LITTLE LEAGUE - Max Watt, Babylon native and former Red Sox draft Month pick, paid a visit to Babylon Little League players during the winter clinics, which is a presented by the town’s free, multi-day training session the league holds at the Babylon High School to help Department of Human Services. Held at Amityville players get ready for the upcoming spring baseball and softball season.

Memorial High School, the theme of this year’s event was “African Americans and the Vote” and featured a keynote address from Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, the first African American sheriff and first African American elected official to hold a non-judicial countywide office in Suffolk County.
