HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause.
