Let’s Take In Some Culture This Weekend “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life.” - Unknown
week ahead, we can sometimes lose sight of the opportunity that each weekend holds for us. As I edit the Coming Events Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible. When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night. Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s
When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit? I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything. I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the

Look at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town. Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two. Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too. Students Stay Fit and Active Earlier this month, students at Babylon Memorial Grade School were highly entertained during an educational and physically beneficial presentation of “The bFit Show,” as hosted by Brian Richards. The assembly, which blended elements of magic and comedy, helped educate students about making healthy food choices and the importance
of exercise. Mr. Richards reinforced these strategies with a number of audience participation activities, stressing the importance of being fueled, active and creative throughout all of their endeavors. The students were highly engaged throughout the course of the presentation, and joined one another in rounds of laughter during Mr. Richards’ humorous entertaining
and educational show. “It made talking about health and fitness fun,” said sixth-grade student Jackson Maurino. “Mr. Richards taught us how different colors of vegetables have different benefits for our bodies.” “I thought the assembly was creative, the workout song he shared was fun, and his magic was funny,” said sixth-grade student Abigail Callahan.

With so much attention directed their way, brides might look for ways to tone their upper bodies for the big day.

Tying the knot can be an expensive endeavor. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed nearly 13,000 brides and grooms in the United States, the average cost of a wedding was more than $33,000. That figure may surprise some couples, many of whom may not be able to afford spending so much on their receptions. Couples may feel pressure to compete with friends and relatives whose weddings they have attended in the past, and that may compel some to stretch their budgets and even go into debt to finance their nuptials. However, there are ways for couples to curtail their wedding costs and still impress guests.
Trim the list
Trimming the guest list may seem harsh, but couples who work together need not cut their guest lists in half. By working together, couples can likely find between 10 and 15 acquaintances on their initial lists who won’t be offended if they’re not invited.
Expand your venue horizons A greater number of couples are looking beyond traditional wedding venues and opting for more unique locales to tie the knot. Farms, ranches, and even in barns are some interesting ideas. The growing popularity of unique wedding venues may make some locations more expensive
than couples anticipate, but a willingness to tie the knot in a unique venue greatly increases couples’ options, improving the chances for an affordable venue.
Cut back on entertainment
Customizing experiences for guests is a major reason why today’s couples are spending so much more per guest than in generations past. Couples may want to give their guests unique experiences, but should not stretch their budgets or go into debt to do so. Don’t underestimate the basics: great music and dancing, and delicious food.
Tie the knot in winter
Summer and fall were the most popular wedding seasons of the last two years, and that does not figure to change anytime soon. Couples can take advantage of those trends by getting married in winter, a slow season for wedding venues and vendors, who might be more flexible with their prices. The most popular months to tie the knot were September, June and October, so couples who don’t want to wed in winter but want to avoid paying top prices should avoid those three months.

The PBS Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. They particularly focus on selfdetermination and full inclusion in the local community. Their mission is to help these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, as well as encourage long-term planning and to support efforts towards establishing social connections and friendships in the community. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to selfdirect their services. As of September 30, 2018, there were 2,926 individuals enrolled in ‘Self Direction’ on Long Island. (Source: NYS OPWDD) Self-Direction is a person-centered approach that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to create a life plan with supports that they chose, based on their unique strengths, needs and goals. It also gives the individual more control over

how funding is used to purchase needed support and services. While the number of individuals choosing to self direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks. The PBS Community Foundation initiatives started with Big Time Glee, a singing group that now meets twice a month in Smithtown. This group performs at various events such as Long Island Ducks games! In response to numerous requests from the Self-Directed community, the Foundation created a similar group in Nassau, which meets monthly in Bellmore. This is called the Nassau Voice. Aditionally, another initative, The Crafting Connection, meets every other week to work on different crafty projects or just to socialize and play games. More recently, Self-Directed individuals are focusing on the health of their mind and body. The PBS Community Foundation offers Yoga Without Boundaries twice a month at the Yoga Darshana Center in West Babylon. This center generously donates the space and Dan Elfawal, a certified special educator and yoga instructor, leads a free yoga class open to individuals with all abilities. Dan says the students walk away focused, calm and self confident. Through the practice of yoga, students build strength and develop coping skills, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle. Kristen Link grew up in a German home where Sunday dinners often meant a feast of sausage or bratwurst. Now, an Integrative Holistic Health Coach and Founder of Wellness By Kristen (www.wellnessbykristen.com), she’s created an updated and more nutritionally dense version of her childhood favorite.
“This dish is comfort, homestyle cooking for the winter,” says Link. “It’s a one pot dish, so you can make it during the week and have plenty of leftovers the next day.” What You Will Need:
1 1/4 lb. sweet Italian Sausage 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 up diced yellow onions 1 large garlic clove minced 1/2 cup diced carrots 1/2 cup diced celery 1 cup diced fennel bulb (stems removed) 2 cups packed, roughly chopped Swiss Chard - stems removed and diced 1 cup green or brown lentils washed 1 bay leaf 1/2 dry red wine 2 1/2 cups beef stock 1/2 teaspoon red chili flakes salt and pepper to taste
Add in lentils and stir. Pour in wine to de-glaze the pan, scrapping any bits up off the bottom if necessary. Pour in the remaining stock (or water) making sure the lentils are almost entirely submerged. Add the bay leaf. Let the pot come to a low boil before setting the burner to low heat and simmering with the lid off. After 15 minutes, add in chard leaves and stir. If at this point the lentils still seem al dente or are no longer covered in liquid, add a little more stock or water until they are submerged. Season as needed with your red chili flakes, salt and pepper. Place sausage links into the lentil mixture so that they are halfway covered. Let cook for another 10 minutes or until the lentils absorbed. Serve with crusty bread if desired! Enjoy!
Kitchen Tools: Large Dutch oven or crock-pot (or large pot with lid) Large wooden spoon Sharp knife Preparation: In a large Dutch oven or saucepan with a lid, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add sausages in a single layer. Cook on each side until they are brown. Remove sausages from pan and set aside. Add the remaining oil to the pan and add in onion. Cook onions for 5 minutes until they are tender. Add garlic and cook 1 minute before adding in carrots, celery, fennel and chard stems. Stir well and cook for 5 more minutes.

Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. physically active lifestyle, high level of fitness during testing, leadership and exceptional achievement within physical education class. The district commemorates both students on this outstanding achievement.
Prestigious Music Festival Four musicians from North Babylon High School showcased their talents performing in the prestigious Long Island String Festival Association’s Chamber Music Festival on Jan. 5 at the Staller Center at SUNY Stony Brook. Under the guidance of teacher Nicole Verderosa,
students that participated in this opportunity were Bayinah Agant, Jaime Crafa, Esther Duclair and Heather O’Leary. Students were selected based on their exemplary recordings of pieces they performed in a rigorous audition process as well as teacher nomination. Students received
coaching from members of a professional string quartet prior to the performance. The all-day training culminated in the public performance on the main stage. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the high school has had students selected for this event.
