It’s Time to Turn Our Backs on False Idols “You shall have no other Gods before me” - Exodus 20:2-3

to make you love entertainers so you would purchase albums and movie tickets, and tune into television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers. Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way. With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being. The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d. For that is as it should be.

Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Les Moonves... R. Kelly. Yes, I said it. We’re in quite a pickle, aren’t we? As a culture we have allowed mass media to convince us that those who become public figures in entertainment are idols to be worshipped. I know, I know... not you. You’re above it all, but let’s say for the sake of argument that most people aren’t. Fair? Following your favorite celebrities on social media, buying magazines when they grace the cover, tuning in to watch awards shows, hanging up posters on your bedroom wall as a teenager. Shall I go on? The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply ﬂawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve

allowed ourselves to worship false idols. Going back to the days of the O.J. Simpson trial that transfixed our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime. Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes. The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented. The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors. With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them. They needed to strategize ways

January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community. They also encourage long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and they support efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation. A lovely young woman, Erin, with a developmental disability has had great success with this foundation. Erin, from Commack has the ability to make decisions and choose her own path through Self Direction. After graduating from High School in 2010, Erin went on to graduate from Eastern Suffolk Boces in 2013. Once she aged out at 21 years old, she and her family chose to Self-Direct her adult services. By doing so she has been successful in accomplishing many of her personal goals! Erin has been employed by her local Stop & Shop for over seven years and has even been honored as Employee of the Month! Additionally, she has built a strong network of social connections. Erin was one of the original members of Big Time Glee, a grassroots singing group that was started by the PBS Community Foundation with just a few young adults meeting weekly at the Leader’s home and singing regularly at community

Senior Centers. She now participates in Big Time Glee (which has grown to 25+ attendees), the Crafting Connection and the PBS Campus Experience at Stony Brook University. Erin says she looks forward to participating in the PBS Community Foundation initiatives because she enjoys singing and performing in the community and she looks forward to being able to “hang out with her friends”. These activities have led to meaningful relationships, connections and other social and recreational opportunities in her community! Lastly, Erin volunteers her time to the Guide Dog Foundation and participates weekly in a cooking class, which helps her gain independent living skills. This supports her ultimate goal of living on her own one day. Erin shows us that her disability doesn’t stand in the way of her abilities. She is a hard-working, social, determined young lady and an inspiration to her family and friends! This food pantry started in 1998 and has a large selection of non-perishable food items, which are available for all residents of Nassau County, regardless of religious affiliation. The pantry, which is located at Congregation Beth Ohr at 2550 Centre Avenue, is open Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm and is staffed by volunteers from the congregation and the community. In coordination with their STEAM-based lessons, second-grade students from Babylon Elementary School recently furthered their understanding of computer programming as they tried their hands with the wildly popular robots, “Ozobots.” With assistance from STEAM instructor Emily Moran, the young engineers were instructed

to map out a series of lines or codes on a piece paper using specially designed markers which led the pathway for the Ozobots. The students were able to give the Ozobots commands such as “Cruise,” “Nitro Boost” and “Spin,” depending on how they colored in the series of blocks on the pre-written line. Once the sequence was completed,

they placed their Ozobots onto the pathway and watched the small robot follow commands and successfully make its way around the track. Ozobots are sweeping the nation amongst elementary-level students, as millions of units have been sold to date in an effort to introduce students to computer programming and coding at an early age.

Board of Ed Acknowledgment Babylon School District Board of Education meeting celebrated the accomplishments of a number of Babylon JuniorSenior High School seniors. To begin the night’s recognitions, Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi announced

that 39 Babylon JuniorSenior High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards from the College Board. These honorees include both current students and members of the Class of 2018. The students were met

with words of praise from Mrs. Rozzi and members of the board of education for their stunning accomplishment, and were presented with tokens of appreciation on behalf of the district.

Jerry Owenburg, a 48year veteran of the fire service, has been elected as the Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Firemen’s Home. The Firemen’s Home, located in Hudson, New York, traces its roots back to 1892 and operates as a high quality, skilled-nursing home that is available to all of New York’s volunteer firefighters. “It’s a great honor to be elected as Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the FASNY Firemen’s Home,” said Owenburg, “As Vice President, I want to make sure that we maintain the premier care that the Firemen’s Home provides for our brothers and sisters of the volunteer fire service. I’m looking forward to supporting the great staff at the Firemen’s Home and making sure every resident feels like

family.” Owenburg was re-elected to the board at the annual FASNY Convention which was hosted in Liverpool, NY. He was recently elected as Vice President of the board, starting this new position on January 1. The Board of Trustees is a group of FASNY members who look over the operation of the Firemen’s Home, ensuring the great care for aging volunteer firefighters from across the State of New York. There are currently 70 retired firefighters and Ladies’ Auxiliary members living full-time in the Firemen’s home, and seeking care. “It’s important to know that retired firefighters and members of the Ladies Auxiliary always have a home away from home if they need it,” said Owenburg. “I’m excited about this new leadership position and making sure

that our brothers and sisters are in good hands.” Owenburg joined the West Babylon Fire Department in 1970 at 20 years old. He joined his father-in-law’s fire company, Rainbow Hose Co. 1, and served as Lieutenant in 1973. In 1974 he moved to Mastic, where he joined the Mastic Fire Department. He served with the Mastic FD for six years, serving as second Lieutenant in 1978, before moving back to West Babylon where he rejoined the West Babylon FD. Founded in 1872, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) represents the interests of 110,000 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel in New York State. Many of you read my Living Well column each week where I shared what I have learned about living your best life. Like you, my wisdom was hard earned through years of ups and downs, and evolution. One of my major downs was years of suffering with anxiety and panic attacks. Since having my book, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, come out in the spring of 2017, I have come to learn just how common this is. Forty million Americans suffer with, or have suffered from, various forms of anxiety, depression, OCD and panic attacks. If you are currently struggling with this, know that you are not alone. Below is a small excerpt from my book to give you an introduction to what I went through at my worst:

At 3 AM on a July 2012 morning, I lay helpless on an emergency room cot, unable to experience any emotion other than fear and the physical sensations that racked my body. My extreme levels of anxiety did not cease; my body showed me no mercy, perhaps because my racing mind did not extend that courtesy to my body. I was wrapped in a backless hospital gown and meagerly strewn blanket that had been nuked in a microwave to keep me warm. I was uncontrollably shaking and shivering from the inside out. I felt aches and pains and my eyes bulged with fright and confusion. “What is happening to me?” I thought. As a chronic baseline anxiety sufferer my entire life, I was in the throes of the worst and most

My Journey With Anxiety Continued From 17 extended episode of acute anxiety I’d ever known. I was experiencing ﬁve or six full blown panic attacks per day, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia and unbearable physical sensations. I feared I was dying, or worse, losing my mind and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder.

It all started when I was seven or eight years old (the age my son is now) and I began to experience intense feelings of worry connected to my physical health. As I reached my preteen years my anxiety grew more ambitious and branched out to what we now commonly refer to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). But at twelve years old it just

kind of felt like this: “Lock the door and check it three times or something bad might happen.” “Touch the wall as you walk by if you want to stay safe.” You might recognize the above as obsessivecompulsive thoughts and behaviors or “magical thinking,” and you may

It was also around this time that I discovered that my well of creativity, intuition and compassion ran deep. The spoken and written word became my solace,

My highly sensitized being may have created anxiety, but it also blossomed into an ability to connect with others in a rareﬁed way, and to express myself as a successful journalist and writer. Watch Out For The Post-Holiday “Blues”

Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people, but I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome; and this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. If you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you; but also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Chrismas Joy to all year round, because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile!
