Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma
bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family
Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

The American Lung Association of the Northeast is seeking charity runners to support its lifesaving mission by running in the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half marathon on Sunday, March 15th. The West Babylon School District bids farewell to Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola, who will step down for purposes of retirement, effective January 10th, 2015. In a letter to the Board of Education, Cacciola said, “The past 38 years have been rewarding and memorable. The friends, colleagues and associates I have come to know are countless and many will always be a part of my life, but I am ready to begin a new chapter.” Cacciola is a graduate of West Babylon Senior High School and says he remembers the days when he used to ride his bike
to the junior high school prior to having a driver’s license. He accepted his first position in 1976 as custodian for the district in 10th grade, working his way through the department and holding the positions of head custodian, chief custodian, asbestos compliance officer and superintendent of buildings and grounds. He took on the role of school business administrator in 1993, followed by his appointment to assistant to the superintendent for finance, a position he held for five years before becoming assistant superintendent for finance. In 2007, Cacciola was named the district’s superintendent of schools. Outside of the district, Cacciola served as president of the Suffolk County Association of School Business Officials from 2004-2005 and as president-elect of the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association in 2014.
Board of Education President Lucy Campasano said it has been a pleasure to watch Cacciola rise to the position of district superintendent. “He has been a watchdog for West Babylon Schools,” she said. “He always helped guide our finances. Twin Eagles Babylon Town Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon recently recognized twin brothers Nicholas Raphael Lande and Zachary Louis Lande of West Babylon’s Boy Scout Troop 104 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor awarded in the organization. A Court of Honor
ceremony was held for the new Eagle Scouts at the American Legion Hall in Babylon. Councilwoman Gordon presented Nicholas and Zachary with official Town Proclamations and congratulated them on their success. For his Eagle Project, Nicholas installed twin paver walls and bleacher
donor signs at the track and field at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School, totaling 337 manhours from planning to completion. Zachary’s project was to beautify the grounds of the Curé of Ars Church in Merrick, which took 133 man hours overall.
