Students in grades 4-7 throughout the North Babylon School District were treated to a special presentation of classic holiday play “A Christmas Carol” by Theatreworks USA. The performance, held at North Babylon High School, was aligned with the English Language Arts curriculum as it is required reading for seventh-graders. In

The district’s cultural arts funds covered the cost of the play. The performance was a fun and educational way for the district to ring in the holiday season and supplement classroom lessons.

My Little Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so

much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.

And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

HONEST WORK AT REASONABLE PRICES Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently presented proclamations to West Babylon High School students participating in the American Legion’s Boys State/Girls State during a recognition ceremony at American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon. The goal of the American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is to help high school students across the country gain an understanding of how government works while developing leadership skills and an appreciation of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Students enrolled in the program learn public speaking

skills, draft and debate legislation, and actively participate in all phases of creating and running a working government. The program is open to high school juniors and participants are selected by local American Legion Posts. “I am a proud supporter of the American Legion and this program is just another example of the work that this great organization is committed to year after year,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Their Boys State and Girls State programs give students unprecedented access to government on both a local and national level and help nurture the growth of our future political leaders. I want

to commend all of the young people who took the opportunity to participate in this impressive program.” The Boys/Girls State is one of the nation’s most respected educational programs of government instruction, with many colleges and universities offering scholarships or admission preference to participants. Two members are selected from each Boys State and Girls State program to attend a national government training workshop in Washington, D.C. where they plan mock political campaigns, lobby for the passage of legislation, and meet with U.S. representatives and senators.

Horodnicki Memorial Scholarship, an SSCM Senior Club Scholarship and based on his performance on Co-Op testing, he claimed a St. John the Baptist Scholar Incentive Award. Ever grateful for his days at SSCM, Peter is now attending St. John the Baptist High School and we wish him every blessing for continued success!

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly at a street renaming ceremony in honor of the late Carmine Marino, Sr. Carmine was a longtime resident of West Babylon and an instrumental member of the local community. After completing high school and growing up during the Great Depression, Carmine joined the 8th Army Air Corp. and worked on B-17 Fighter Bombers during World War II and was stationed in Ipswich, England from 1942-1945.
