Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally
even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.
Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.

Holiday Parade And Tree Lighting
In the spirit of giving and supporting others in the community and the world at large, the student council and coadvisers Dawn Hovanec and Jeanette Roberto of North Babylon’s Marion G. Vedder Elementary School hosted various fundraisers in November. Following the devastation in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan, students participated in “Fill a Heart for the Philippines” by donating $1 to color a heart that was used to decorate the school’s main hallway. The money raised

will be donated to the American Red Cross. The Student Council also collected toiletries and wrote letters of encouragement to the families that have been affected. The goods and letters will be sent to the Queens Bible Church in Glendale, NY, which will forward all donations at no cost to the Philippines. Additionally, the student council hosted an arts-andcrafts supply drive, with all materials collected being donated to the children’s ward at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Vedder Elementary School to perform original adaptations of various children’s book stories. With the assistance of their teacher David Signorelli, the juniors and seniors wrote and staged original skits including “The Three Little Pigs,” “The Principal from the Black Lagoon,” “Stand Back, Said the Elephant,
I’m Going to Sneeze,” “Mooseltoe,” “Nightsong” and Dr. Seuss’s “Are You My Mother?” The often humorous skits entertained the crowd of first- and secondgraders while allowing the high schoolers an opportunity to fine-tune their performances for an audience. “This project taught us to work together as a group and allowed us to show everyone what we can do as theater students,” said junior Kaila McLaughlin.
