On Sunday, October 30th, the St. John the Baptist Boys Varsity Cross Country Team won the title at the CHSSA Cross Country League Championships scoring 43 points under the direction of Coach David Wood at Sunken Meadow State Park. This is the ﬁrst time since 1971 (45 years) that the St. John the Baptist Boys Varsity Cross Country

Team took the CHSAA title. Placing ﬁrst in the race was Bay Shore resident, junior Patrick Kain. The dedicated and skilled young athletes comprising the SJBHS Boys Varsity Team are as follows: Nick Cirasole, Kyle McCormack, Aiden Healy, Patrick Kain, Pete DeMaio, Thomas Roulette, and Declan Brown.

November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on ﬁnding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

In September, the team placed third at the Smithtown West Invitational Tournament. On October 15th, it ﬁnished second at the Yale University Fall Academic

Tournament, and on October 29th, the team topped both of those achievements by placing ﬁrst at the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights Invitational Tournament. This is the second year in a row North Babylon took ﬁrst place at Rutgers. Anglade also distinguished himself once again by having the third highest points scored by an individual player at the Rutgers tournament.

Amazing Academics This team has qualiﬁed for the HSNCT Nationals and PACE Nationals three times, and its next tournament will be a History Bowl at Seton Hall in New Jersey, where it will aim to qualify for the History Bowl Nationals.
