3D Mammography is the newest advanced technology in Women’s Health Three Dimensional (3D) mammography, also called Breast Tomosynthesis, is the newest technology in the fight against breast cancer that allows radiologists to examine breast tissue one layer at a time. 3D mammography uses high-powered computing to convert digital mammography breast images into a stack of thin slices. Standard Digital Mammography provides only a two dimensional (2D) images of the breast. The breast is three dimensional, containing structures such as blood vessels, milk ducts, fat and ligaments. On a two dimensional (2D) mammogram, these structures overlap which can lead to small cancers going undiagnosed, or can cause normal tissue to appear abnormal and lead to unnecessary “call backs”. Using 3D mammography and digital 2D mammography together for screening has been proven to reduce “call backs” up to 40%. 3D mammography finds cancers earlier than 2D mammography alone, with a 27% increase in cancer detection and a 40% increase in invasive cancer detection. A 3D mammography exam is similar to a traditional mammogram. The technologist positions the patient, compresses the breast under a paddle and takes images from different angles. During the 3D mammography part of the exam, the machine sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images in just seconds. The radiologists can view the breast tissue in one millimeter layers. The doctors at Suffolk Imaging have installed the most updated Hologic 3D mammography systems at all of their locations (Lake Grove, Medford and Lindenhurst). Interventional 3D stereotactic breast biopsy services are now available in both the Lake Grove and the Lindenhurst locations. All three imaging centers are the first in New York to provide the only FDA approved 3D mammography dose reduction software (Hologic C-View). With this new software technology, 3D mammography is equivalent to 2D digital mammography in dose. One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally. Some people lucked out. Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be. They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to. As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long

Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both. But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos. Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist. Let’s all hang in there. Together, we can – and will – get through this. And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

Suffolk County music honors were bestowed upon four Babylon High School students, as they were selected to participate in this fall’s NYSCAME/ SCMEA All-County Music Festival. Camila Romero will sing in the women’s chorus, Matthew Taggart will perform the tuba in the orchestra ensemble, and Amanda Crowley and Brooke Wexler will be featured in the mixed chorus. “This distinction notes that these performers are among the top studentmusicians in all of Suffolk County,” said Director of Fine Arts Angela Turk. “The music department is very proud knowing they will represent their school and community well at this year’s festival.” Students were selected for these honors based on their 2013 NYSSMA solo evaluation scores.

As bullying prevention is a topic to discuss yearround, the school’s fifthgraders will learn about the New York State Dignity for All Students Act, which specifically addresses bullying, this November.

Babylon Elementary School students and families laced up their sneakers and walked to school in early October as part of this year’s International Walk To School Day. Hundreds of individuals left traditional means of transportation behind as they took part in the program. Whether their journey was miles long or just around the block, the excitement for

the event was at a record high. “On this day, as part of our Healthy Heart Week, we encourage students to eat healthy, drink lots of water, get extra sleep and get moving,” said Principal Jessica Kemler, who coordinated the event with physical education teacher Rob Andrews. “Walking to school is a great way to add exercise into our day. What makes this event even

more special is being able to share that walk with family and friends.” Students were dressed in Babylon colors as they arrived at the school building to receive their participation stickers. This is the sixth year the school has taken part in this international program, which regularly draws participation from approximately 40 countries worldwide.

Applebee’s restaurants throughout Nassau and Suffolk will hold their annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 7th at 8:30 a.m. The fundraiser helps support the good work of the U.S. Marines “Toys for Tots” program. Advanced reservations are required and a limited number of tickets are available for a $10 per person donation. Children under 2 are admitted free. Guests receive breakfast compliments of Applebee’s, goodies, raffle tickets for door prizes and will have the opportunity to take a photo with Santa (bring a camera). One-hundred percent of the proceeds will go to U.S. Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” Program and will help brighten the holidays for local

families many of whom are still recovering from the devastating effects of Sandy. Applebee’s on Long Island and participating restaurants in New Jersey, operated by Doherty Enterprise, Inc., have raised a combined total of $3 million for “Toys for Tots” over the past 14 years. Dollars raised in each community benefit that local community. To raise additional funds for the U.S. Marine Corps program, Applebee’s is also offering paper “gift packages” for $1 each that will be prominently displayed in the restaurant. Remember when you were younger and in school and the teacher made you answer the questions? Who? What? Where? When? How? And WHY? But when someone we love discovers they have cancer, dies suddenly, or is killed in an accident, we never really get the answer to the question WHY? Of course, we can answer the question Who? Our mother, father, spouse, sibling, child, relative or friend. What? Death or terminal illness that will lead to death. When? Is answered by date and time. How? Is answered by the medical examiner or doctor telling us the heart, brain or lungs stopped functioning. BUT WHY? Why now? Why not me? WHY? WHY? WHY? This question cannot be adequately answered because there aren’t any answers that will satisfy us. People torture themselves trying to get the answer. Why at that exact moment did a single cell in their body decide to multiply uncontrollably? Why at that exact moment did the coronary artery decide to block? Why at that moment did the cerebral artery decide to burst? Why at that exact moment was he on the road when the truck crossed over in to his lane? WHY? WHY? WHY? After all I have seen and all that I have heard, I have come to the conclusion there isn’t ever going to be a satisfactory answer to the question Why? I am also convinced the answer to the questions WHY? Do exist, just not on this earth. And when we rejoin our loved ones and the question Why? Could be answered, the answer will no longer matter to us.
