SOCIAL STUDIES STORYTELLING - West Babylon Junior High School social studies teacher Faye Lynch dressed in Native American attire to retell the Iroquois creation myth to the seventh-grade social studies classes. Photo courtesy of: West Babylon School District

As part of their social studies curriculum, West Babylon Junior High School seventh-graders have been learning about the history of the Iroquois Native Americans and recently participated in an oral history lesson on the Iroquois creation myth. Surrounded by a mock campfire, soft music and their social studies teachers, who were dressed in Native American attire, students learned about the way stories were passed by the tribe. The school’s three social studies teachers took turns presenting the interactive story to the active listeners. After the presentation, students were asked about the different symbols presented in the story and cited specific examples. Back in class, students drew pictures of the characters in the myth and also designed their own creation myth scenes.

Miscellaneous Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still

less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Break out the sweaters and scarves, boots and gloves – it’s gonna be a chilly few months ahead. Speaking of, have you made your Christmas shopping lists yet? What are you waiting for? At this rate, the bathing suits for next summer will be out on the racks in a matter of weeks. Forget Autumn – holiday season is upon us, with various countdowns marking the minutes until Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. {For those inquiring readers, Buddy the Betta, who just celebrated his

eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very first holiday season. Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree. There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…

I am alarmed by the large number of kids in my school who, in recent days, have claimed that America should keep to itself and out of world affairs. Some have even gone as far as to say that we should be completely isolationist. I have heard this argued in debates at the debate club I helped start at my school, and in my Ethics class. I consider myself to be well-versed in American history so, for a moment, let’s look back to times when America didn’t lead in the world: 6 million Jews died in German concentration camps, Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Americans were taken hostage and held for over a year in Iran, 800,000 Rwandans were killed

over a 100 day period, 350,000 Bosnians were killed in the bloody genocidal regime of Slobodan Milosevic, and now we have ISIS, which has formed as a result of decreased U.S. military presence in Iraq. Students reason this way because they claim America is too aggressive, arrogant and has caused more harm than good, of course drawing all of their evidence off the Iraq War. Though some of this may be true, millions have died when we don’t take a leadership role in the world. That’s not being an arrogant American - that’s the truth. But can the students really be blamed? In classrooms, students are fed this information in AP U.S.

History courses that have a curriculum that is heavily liberally biased and cannot be changed. Though it has reformed lately, it has claimed that we fulfilled manifest destiny to flex our “culturally superior” muscle and that the end of the Cold War should be mainly attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev, not to Ronald Reagan, whose arms race and build-up ultimately caused the Soviet Union to go broke. So there it is - the question is answered, students can’t be blamed. Unless they do an extensive amount of studies on their own time, they will not realize that if America doesn’t lead, the world will fall apart.

Cross Country Gets Fit Showing off their team spirit, members of the West Babylon varsity girls’ cross-country team participated in the Fit for a Cure 5K on October 4th at Tanger Outlets in Deer Park.

The team wore custom made t-shirts in honor of 2001 West Babylon School District graduate Shannon Saturno (Romanchuk), who also participated in the run with her friends and family. Placing second

place overall for the female division was sophomore Tara Hauff, who also won her age division (15-19). Portions of the proceeds of the race went to the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition.

As part of National Fire Safety Week, students at William E. DeLuca Elementary School in the North Babylon School District received a visit from the North Babylon Fire Department for an informative lesson on fire prevention, fire safety, and fire equipment. Students in all grade levels had the opportunity

to participate in a variety of activities designed to make them aware of fire hazards and how firefighters work to protect them. In one activity, students were helped to escape from the window of a trailer that was set up as a room in a home. Students also watched videos and lectures, completed readings and handouts, and climbed into

Going National After capturing first place at the county and state levels of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation School Bus Safety Poster Contest, West Babylon Senior High School ninth-grader Giuliana Grosso’s creation is now heading to judging on the national level. The theme for 2015

contest was “Bully Free Zone” and called for submissions in the following categories: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and special education. Guliana’s poster won in the 6-8 grade category, as it was submitted last year when she was at the junior high school. The National School

Bus Safety Poster Contest is sponsored each year by the National Association for Pupil Transportation, the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services and the National School Transportation Association.

Lifelong Learners More than a dozen West Babylon School District teachers, along with curriculum specialist Jennifer Hoffman, attended two conference days at Teachers College at Columbia University this fall. The “Units of Study Conference Days: Implementing Rigorous Coherent Units of Study in Reading and Writing” were led by Lucy Calkins. The conference was

designed to help teachers learn how to use a workshop approach to reading/ writing instruction in ways that accelerate students’ progress toward meeting ambitious new global standards. The conference supports West Babylon’s initiative of implementing the Teachers College Units of Study in Writing in grades K-5. Teachers were also provided the Teachers College Units of Study in

Reading, with a planned implementation in 20162017. “The commitment to these trainings shows how West Babylon educators engage in and value their own professional learning and support the learning of colleagues,” said Hoffman. “The teachers worked as a team to take collective responsibility for the high achievement of our diverse student population.”

School Pride Shines Even though Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s homecoming festivities were rescheduled due to the weather, the school didn’t pass up the opportunity to show off their school pride with activities such as spirit week, spirit night and a pep rally.

At the pep rally on October 8th, each of the fall teams were introduced, the high school marching band entertained the crowd and members of the gymnastics and cheerleading teams showed off their skills. Kyle Baldwin and Shayne Antolini, who were announced as homecoming

king and queen the night prior, were seated front and center in their respective thrones. During the October 7th spirit night, the different classes took part in teambonding events, such as dance-offs, scooter and potato sack races, a basketball shoot out.

This is the eighth year BES has participated in the event, which was coordinated by physical education teacher Rob Andrews.

Semifinalist Named West Babylon Senior High School senior Alexander Barrett has been named a semifinalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition. He will have the opportunity to compete with 16,000 other semifinalists for some 8,000 National Merit scholarships to be offered next spring. Barrett was among the 1.5 million juniors who

entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, commonly known as the PSAT. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. To be eligible to advance to the finalist

stage of the competition, Barrett will be required to submit a detailed scholarship application with information about his academic records, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, honors and awards.
