Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper. Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too. What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory was on hand this past weekend to congratulate and present proclamations to two local residents, Erik Sattler and Liam Gargiulo, at their Eagle Scout award ceremonies. Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America scouting program. With this achievement, Erik and Liam are among the small percentage of young men in the Boy Scouts of America who have reached this prestigious level. Since the inception of the

Eagle Scout award in 1912, only about two percent of eligible Scouts have earned this honor. For his Eagle Scout project, Erik Sattler of Boy Scout Troop 284 in Copiague installed a 20-foot ball pit and a permanent 50-foot KanJam game in Tanner Park. The project included designing, fundraising, purchasing materials and building the games, as well as prepping and cleaning the area where the games were installed. This project took 178 working hours to complete. The weekend’s second

Eagle Scout inductee was Liam Gargiulo of Boy Scout Troop 1634 in West Babylon. Liam’s Eagle Scout project consisted of the planning, development and construction of a sound area in the rear of the North Babylon High School auditorium to give a permanent, professional space to operate the sound for shows and concerts, which will help prolong the life of the equipment, giving it a better storage area and eliminating the need to move the equipment.

Flowers add tremendously to the serenity and beauty of a funeral. But there is a point when “too much of a good thing” is not in the interest of all concerned. Now, I know that the florists dislike it when I write an article like this one, but remember, I also recommend renting caskets to save money. There are alternatives to sending flowers. You can bring pictures of the deceased to share with the family. You can donate the money to a charity of your choice or a charity the family selects. You can send food to the home for the family between visiting hours or after the funeral. You can put money in an envelope and give it to the family and allow them to make the decision of what memorial they would like to see benefit from their loss. The question I am asked most often is, “What happens to all the flowers?” Well, some of the flowers are taken to the church (maximum of two pieces); some are taken to the cemetery. When possible, some are given to nursing homes or other churches or charitable groups that may need flowers for the evening. The flowers that cannot be donated or given away are simply discarded. Remember, flowers do add to the beauty and serenity of the funeral, but also remember there are other alternatives to sending flowers, which I have mentioned above.

The Babylon School District recently received a generous donation of $25,000 from NYS Assemblywoman Christine Pellegrino to support and enhance the school’s newly implemented K-6 Social Emotional Program, titled Second Step. The social emotional program came about due to the brainstorming of multiple district staff members. It aims to promote school success, school connectedness, and a safe, respectful, responsible school climate by directly teaching the skills that strengthen the students’ ability to learn, manage emotions, have empathy and solve problems. Throughout the course of a recent visit to Babylon

Memorial Grade School, Assemblywoman Pellegrino was able to sit down with Babylon Memorial Grade School Principal Steven Goldberg, Babylon Elementary School Principal Travis Davey and Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi to discuss the district’s robust efforts to date and brainstorm ideas to further the success of the initiative in the future. Additionally, joining Assemblywoman Pellegrino was current Speaker of the New York State Assembly Carl Heastie, who was also able to engage in productive conversations with the Babylon School District staff. Babylon Memorial Grade School third-grade teacher Catherine O’Connor was on

hand in the school library to demonstrate an exemplary lesson rooted in the Second Step philosophy with her class. As the students interacted amongst each other and focused on their listening skills, they also optimized concentration habits. “I was grateful to have been able to discuss the strong relationships Babylon has had with our elected officials, and how we work together on initiatives that help public schools,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Due to Assemblywoman Pellegrino’s generous aid, students will be able to look forward to additions to the program such as yoga sessions during the winter months.”

It was a weekend full of festivities as West Babylon School District celebrated its homecoming on October 7th. Starting with a pep rally at West Babylon Senior High School on October 6th and ending with a homecoming dance on the evening of October 7th, the district and community came together to show their West Babylon pride. The homecoming parade kicked off the events on Saturday, beginning in the business sector of Little East Neck Road and marching down to West Babylon Junior High

School’s turf field. The parade featured a class float done collectively as a school this year, as well as clubs and organizations, elementary school students and administrators, sports teams and members of the homecoming court. Prior to the game, senior athletes from the football and cheerleading teams, along with their parents, took to the field to be recognized by the crowd. The marching band performed “The StarSpangled Banner” and “God Bless America” before the Eagles took on the Kings Park Kingsmen. The

Eagles scored a touchdown in the first minute of the game, giving them an early lead. West Babylon used that momentum and dominated for the rest of the game, defeating Kings Park 34-21. The halftime show featured performances by the marching band and varsity cheerleaders. Following the game, the homecoming dance welcomed more than 650 students. Baylee Napolitano and Marc Esposito were crowned the homecoming queen and king, respectively.
