he Babylon United Methodist Church Nursery School recently toured the Main Fire House in Babylon Village. The volunteer firefighters take time out of their week to teach the children about fire safety, how their equipment works and assign “homework” to the children. They instruct the children to remind their parents to practice fire drills at home and change the batteries in the smoke detectors.

The American Heart Association is proud to have Gabriella Lisboa serving as the 2015 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 20th, at Jones Beach. Gabriella was just 6 months old when she was diagnosed with DCRV (Double Chamber of Right Ventricle) and had to have two open heart surgeries when she was nine months old. Today, she is a happy and healthy and has made it her mission to raise money and awareness for the American Heart Association so that they can do more research and educate others so that there are more survivors like her. At the Heart Walk, survivors are celebrated. A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Ofﬁcer DuWayne Gregory attended “The Goals and Success Seminar” on Monday, August 10th, at the Wyandanch Public Library. The Wyandanch Public Library, along with other community agencies, partnered with the Suffolk County Department of Labor to provide youths with summer and seasonal jobs. Over 50 at-risk teens from the Wyandanch community were in attendance. “Always look ahead of you and not behind,” Sylvia Archibald, Director of the Wyandanch Public Library

advised the students. “Have faith in yourself, and you will be amazed at what you can achieve. Success may not always be easy but it will be worth it.” The event was organized by Wyandanch Public Library employee and former North Babylon resident Cyrinia Prendergast. “Growing up, I was able to have the opportunity to have my mother and friends speak to me about goals, and I realized that not everyone is able to have that chance,” said Prendergast. “Therefore, I was inspired to put this event together for these students. I really just wanted to give

Relationships Never End

One of the benefits of being a funeral director is that I get to listen to many learned clergymen. I would like to share with you part of a eulogy recently presented by an insightful clergyman. The eulogy started out the same as many eulogies I had heard before. The deceased was praised for all the good he had done in this world. The immediate family and friends were assured the deceased was in a better place now void of suffering and filled with joy. Then he spoke of the relationship the deceased had with his family and friends. He said although your loved one’s life has ended, your relationship with him will never end. He will always love you and you will always love him. His relationship with you is like a stone thrown in a quiet ocean. We never know on what shore the ripples will land and what effect they will have on that shore. Like your relationship with the deceased, you never really know how great of an effect the deceased has had not only on you but on your children and your children’s children. The clergyman went on to say that you should continue to think of the deceased as a source of comfort, joy, strength, wisdom and love. Because just as if a person would move to a new town to prepare a home for his family to come, you would continue to think of him as being with you. The deceased has simply gone to a new home and is awaiting your arrival. Although the deceased has died, his thoughts, love and your relationship with him will live with you forever. The clergyman concluded by saying all people and all relationships affect our lives forever and never end. Just as the stones thrown in the ocean affect the ocean, some relationships greatly affect us, some only to a minimal amount, but they all affect us and all relationships stay with us forever and affect our lives every day.

By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me. Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come? As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone

asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time. What’s the rush? In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way! You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders. Of course, so I’m told,

there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift. Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is. Happy “Day” to all, every day. See you on the flip side.
