In mid June, the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernian’s Suffolk County Board partnered with and hosted a fundraiser for the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. This Taste of Babylon event was held at the Hibernian Cultural Center on Locust Avenue in Babylon Village. They had a beautiful day for the event, which was attended by 235 guests. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Town Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Town Councilman Tom Donnelly, New York State Senator Phil Boyle, and New York State Assemblyman Andrew Raia at a ribboncutting ceremony to dedicate the enhanced “North Babylon Welcomes You” beautification site at the corner of Hubbards Path and Belmont Avenue.
The Town of Babylon Beautification Program has partnered with the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce in an effort to help keep its communities safe, clean, and beautiful. In addition to its hard work in cleaning up this site, the Chamber has also assisted with food pantries, street fairs, and other beautification sites around the hamlet of North Babylon. Of Birthdays & Bedtimes Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just flown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been flitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand… Ah, but enough about me. My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.
On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him?? Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand. It’s much faster that way. Plus,
it eliminates the possibility of my glorious fins accidentally swatting my flakes to the floor, never to be seen again. Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me. As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish. Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

We stated that it did not matter whether you were planning a traditional funeral with a direct cremation or direct burial with a memorial service at a later date. We feel, from all our experiences, those who take the time to think about a funeral service which recalls the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth into your and your family’s lives begin the mourning process with a much better focus. Pictures of times gone by are a wonderful reminder of a person’s contributions to joy and happiness. Letters written by friends, co-workers and family also remind you of the joy the deceased brought into your hearts. Although flowers contribute beauty and are an integral part of the funeral process - instead of flowers you may wish to ask friends and family members to contribute pictures or a written story to the funeral service. Some of you reading this article may also wish to consider bringing pictures or a written story to a funeral instead of sending flowers; The family would greatly appreciate your efforts. You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister, the eulogy can be delivered at the church during the funeral, or memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and a funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before. This is for several reasons, the most important is the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day, not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies. You would not want to postpone your funeral because another family took 45 minutes to eulogize a member of their family. Think about it, come talk to us and we will help you.

Because they enable people to make calls or send messages from just about anywhere, mobile phones can be great conveniences. But they also can be annoying when conversations, texting or perusing the Internet gets in the way of proper etiquette. Talking loudly in public areas, texting when in the middle of a face-to-face conversation or sharing personal details in public are not just bad manners, but such behaviors also can be unsafe. Poor mobile phone etiquette is cause for some concern, but there is great cause for concern for people who find themselves
routinely distracted by their mobile phones while driving or operating equipment. Using a mobile phone when driving greatly increases a person’s risk of getting into an accident. Distracted driving has become something of an epidemic, as the following figures, courtesy of Don’t Text and Drive, illustrate: • Texting or doing something on your phone can distract drivers for as long as five seconds. If you’re traveling at 55 miles per hour, that is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field without looking at the road. • Texting while driving makes
you 23 times more likely than normal to be in a car crash. • Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 involved in car accidents in the United States, 13 percent admitted to texting or talking on their phones at the times of their crashes. • The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to around 1 .6 million crashes each year, with nearly 330,000 injuries occurring from such accidents. • Cell phone usage while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at
the legal limit. Although the majority of drivers support a ban on texting while driving, many still continue to do it. The single best way to prevent driving accidents and fatalities related to mobile phone usage is to put the phone down. Consider the following suggestions to help you avoid looking at your phone while behind the wheel: • Keep your phone in a purse or in a bag in the back seat so that it is not readily accessible while driving. Many cars now have Bluetooth-enabled handsfree dialing and calling, so you do not need to have the phone
nearby to answer a call. • Leave your phone at home on short trips and give yourself a break from screen time. • Set up an automatically generated text message that indicates you are driving. Other apps will read out texts to you or block incoming calls or texts altogether. • Turn off notifications so you will not be tempted to look at your phone each time there’s a new pop-up or sound. Remember, any texts can wait until you pull over, park or arrive at your destination.
