North Babylon High School senior Alyssa Elliot collected more than $4,000 through various fundraising efforts for a brand new North Babylon Bulldog mascot costume. Elliot, a student in the school’s Career Development Program, has been the mascot at various academic and athletic events at and around the school. As the costume became worn out from years of use, she committed herself to raising funds for new Bulldog garb. Some of her fundraising efforts included making appearances at local events and taking mascot photos with patrons as a ‘thank you’ for their donations.

Scholars at the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) regularly augment their studies with fieldtrips and lessons that help them apply what they are learning in real, hands-on ways. One such experience was their recent trip to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. P-TECH scholars were given an exclusive museum tour by the Cradle’s Competitions Coordinator Kerri MacKay. The Parkdale Civic Association adopted the roundabout to help improve the traffic around Kime and Greenwood Drive as well as to beautify the area. The spot was adopted by Andrew and Elinor Spadafora, who volunteer for the civic association. The Spadaforas donated plant material, planted colorful flowers and

installed both security cameras and solar lighting at the site. Over 600 tulip and daffodil bulbs were donated by Stables garden center in North Babylon to help spruce up the garden. This project is a fulfillment of one of the civic association’s goals: to improve the community through beautification.

Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

I spent a lifetime probing and searching For things about which the critiques sing, Like fantasies, facts truth or lie; So for today, I chose the Fourth of July. Around the world I many times flew, Skimming the firmament when gray turned to blue. In many places I have been, The Seven Wonders I have seen. I socialized with the poor and the rich, Visited the Taj Mahal and the London Bridge. Year after year on Independence Day, I joined into the cheers and firework play.

Finally now having reached advanced age, I found what all along I had wanted to stage. With my mind open though my body remiss, I wish that you all experience this day’s bliss.
