Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently announced that the lineup for the Town’s 2014 Summer Concert Series has been revealed and features exciting popular acts such as local Billy Joel tribute band Big Shot and rock legend Dicky Betts, a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band. The free concerts are held all season long to celebrate the spirit of summer in the Town of Babylon. “We are excited to once again provide a summer full of live entertainment,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “The lineup for the summer concert series is filled with nationally recognized cover bands and individual artists covering many music tastes- from country to hard rock. Memory Project Babylon High School National Art Honor Society members helped create personal mementos for orphans living in Haiti through the nationally run Memory Project. As part of their participation in the project, the students created portraits for children based on photographs provided through the organization. Across The Curriculums Babylon Memorial Grade School sixthgrade students in Rick Punzone’s class had the chance to expand their understanding of WWI and WWII through a multidisciplinary learning project. Combining their art, technology, library and social studies curriculum, the students participated in an enriching, crosscurricular project under the guidance of each of these area teachers. Building upon what they learned about the wars in their social studies

curriculum, the students researched the time period during library sessions to understand the important role letter writing had in the soldiers’ lives as well as the censorship that took place with messages sent home. After studying the history behind the medal of honor and other distinguished honors bestowed upon soldiers, the students had the chance to create their own medals. Using clay, they sculpted their pieces and inscribed the attributes each one would

honor, as well as selected a corresponding ribbon to distinguish the original pieces. To provide an individual perspective on the material, art teacher Pat Stork shared her family’s story of service during these historical wars. Finally, writing as soldiers, the class penned letters to their family members and took turns censoring the work of their classmates following the protocols that were in place during the time period they were studying.

Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. “Nobody should ever have to go without food, medical attention or other necessities, which is why our senior advocates literally bring these vital programs and services directly to our seniors in their own communities,” said Legislator D’Amaro. Senior Advocates meet with interested and needy seniors aged 60 and over at regularlyscheduled times in specific locations throughout the community. SEPTA Honors As a result of their yearlong fundraising efforts, Babylon School District’s SEPTA aided in the district’s mission to further integrate technology in the classroom by presenting Eileen Ratto with an Apple iPad Mini during their early June meeting. As a special education teacher, Ms. Ratto will utilize the device to enhance the multisensory learning approach currently implemented

within her classroom at Babylon Memorial Grade School. In addition to the technology presentation, SEPTA also honored the outstanding educational achievements of one graduating senior during the meeting. The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, was presented with a $500 scholarship based on an essay describing how, with the support of school-related

resources, the student was able to achieve goals. SEPTA thanks the community for supporting its fundraising efforts throughout the year and helping to ensure that these presentations were possible. Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even. Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days. You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small ﬁre has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go. My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before

her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All

situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shufﬂe, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever. These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.
