I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met
with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

Founded in 1907, UPS has a rich history of safety and training. The company issued its first driver handbook in 1917 and began recognizing safe drivers in 1923. In 1928, UPS recognized its first five-year safe driver, Ray McCue, with UPS founder Jim Casey presenting him a gold and platinum watch. In an effort to strengthen the district’s school-to-community partnership and keep open lines of communication, Babylon School District recently held its second annual Legislative Advocacy Workshop and Community Summit focused on important educational matters. After a stunning musical performance from Babylon Junior-Senior High School students Maxwell O’Handley and Kyra Pitagno, Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi gave a warm welcoming address. Throughout her message, she shared an overview of the district’s recent successes, and invited attendees to share any initiative ideas they had that would benefit the community as a whole. They also compared and contrasted the various cultural similarities and differences in connection with the Foreign Languages in Elementary Schools program.

Sometimes we forget the really important things in life.
Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My six-year old asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Nana gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen! Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!” Hearing this, my grandchild burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my grandson and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my grandson asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing) “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already.” ~Author Unknown~

Robotics Competition Hofstra University has been home to School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI)’s Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition since it first opened the doors to the organization in 2005. The event, which this year takes place March 31st and April 1st at the University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, is made possible through the funding and support of donors such as Hofstra. “Hosting the FIRST Robotics Competition has been a very rewarding experience for us,” says Dr. Sina Y. Rabbany, Dean of the DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science. “The skill, energy and ingenuity these young contestants bring to the field of robotics mesh perfectly with what we as educators recognize as the traits necessary to succeed as professionals in our fields.” Now in its 18th season, the SBPLI Long Island Regional features teams of high schoolaged students from across Long Island, the New York metropolitan area and even around the world competing in a cooperative tournamentstyle robotics competition. This year, 55 teams of
students, including one from Brazil, will demonstrate their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play and sportsmanship. This high-energy event further emphasizes the importance of high-impact partnerships between students, universities, businesses and communities. “We are so grateful for Hofstra University’s continued support of the SBPLI Long Island Regional,” says Yacov Shamash, Chairman, SBPLI Board of Directors, and Vice President for Economic Development at Stony Brook University. “This event provides an opportunity for all FIRST robotics students to turn a vision into a reality. It also opens the door to possibilities that are few and far between these days, like scholarships or job opportunities, and helps them develop skills that are necessary to enrich their professional lives, such as maturity, teamwork, problem solving and healthy competition. It’s wonderful to see one of the region’s top university’s commitment to STEM (science, technology, engineering and
mathematics) awareness.” Support for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition also provides sponsors with access to a qualified, skilled and welleducated workforce that can bring them into the future. It also affords local businesses the opportunity to help mold the future of STEM education and programming, through invitations to join the fully volunteer-run organization that organizes the event. In the case of Hofstra, it provides access to the next generation of students for the University’s growing DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science. In addition to its support for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, Hofstra University intends to provide students and their families with tours of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. This enables students, regardless of graduation date, to get a first-hand look at the setup of a college campus and the workings of an engineering program.
