Service to the Community On Saturday, February 20th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey attended Sean David Hotelling’s (Troop 175) Eagle Scout Court of Honor. The ceremony for this West Babylon native was held at the North Lindenhurst Fire Department, and was heavily attended by David’s family, scouts of all ages, and elected officials or their representatives. In order to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, every candidate must satisfy a wide variety of requirements before each milestone along the path is reached. Perhaps the most significant – and
challenging – requirement that a candidate has to tackle is the service project. This project is intended to be a lasting contribution to the community, and is planned and executed by means of the candidate applying the skills he acquired through his many years of Scouting. For his service project, Sean chose to restore a largely forgotten part of West Babylon History – the Larsen Lane Cemetery. This particular cemetery had fallen into a sad state of disrepair over the years, despite the fact that it is the resting place for veterans from as far back as the Civil

All the hearts are glazed and tied with a ribbon before being placed in an organza bag to be delivered. “This is a great way to connect the school with the community while also helping those in need,” said Babylon Student Council president Haley Watt.

state-mandated programs. “Our goal is not just to maintain programs but to enhance educational opportunities for all of our students,” said Babylon Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Working together, we can advocate for the full restoration of GEA funds.” The legislators and administrators discussed the upcoming state budget process and the difficulties for school districts caused by a lack of state aid. The negative effects of New York State’s unpopular Gap Elimination Adjustment remained a particularly urgent topic of discussion, with the district providing sample letters and pamphlets in support of ending the annual practice. Babylon has lost approximately $5 million since the GEA was implemented in the 20112012 school year. “Long Island school districts are fighting for their fair share of state aid,” said Saladino. “The budget must be balanced and recognize the needs of our communities on Long Island that pay a disproportionate share in state income taxes.” Assemblyman Saladino also addressed the issue of unfunded state mandates and Common Core. He proposed a reform plan to halt Common Core, establish a Blue Ribbon committee and bring back control to the local school districts.

Donation Supports District Beginning in the 20162017 school year, Babylon Junior-Senior High School will be one of only a few high schools on Long Island to partner with the Project Lead The Way program, the nation’s leading provider of STEM/ STEAM programs. Thanks to a $200,000 donation from Babylon resident and philanthropist Theresa Santmann, the district is well on its way to offering the support needed to make the program a success.
Over the years, Ms. Santmann has forged an ongoing partnership with the district, giving students the opportunity for growth in a variety of ways. The district has used funds donated for programs in the arts, the science research lab and now in its new engineering pathway. Project Lead The Way offers the perfect chance to jump-start their future careers by enabling them to earn college credits in engineering
while participating in the Engineering Pathway at Babylon High School. “The district is once again pleased to have Ms. Santmann help provide our students with the tools they need for continued success,” said Babylon Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We continue to be grateful for her support in offering the students of Babylon the opportunity to grow and become college and career ready.”

Nominations Due Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre announced that she has begun collecting nominations for her second annual Women of Distinction Awards, encouraging community members to nominate women who have made a substantial impact in the fields of education, community relations, health care, volunteerism and business. “This Women’s History Month, I want to take a moment to recognize and thank the women of our community who make such a big difference,” said Jean-Pierre. “By honoring these women, who exemplify leadership and commitment to our

have been celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday in wide and varied ways, just as the good “doctor” would have enjoyed it! Naturally, starting out with reading a number of their favorite Dr. Suess books was key. First graders then created their
own Cats in Hats, did some Seussian brain-work on crossword puzzles, word searches and other fun activities. They honed their math skills and took part in the democratic process by taking a class vote and documenting their favorite books on a bar chart. Getting hands on with Mrs. McGerald by making their own green eggs and ham in the classroom made the day even more delicious. And it was especially fun to incorporate some art and science in there, as the students rolled up their sleeves and dove into the color wheel, mixing blue and yellow food dye to create the green they needed for their special eggs!
