North Babylon School District Athletic Director John Sparacio has been named one of Long Island’s seven Administrators of the Year by the prestigious Council of Administrators and Supervisors (CAS), and is the lone director to be bestowed the award this year. CAS is the largest professional organization of school administrators and supervisors on Long Island, and protects the legal rights of school leaders while serving their professional interests. Sparacio was nominated for the distinction by North Babylon High

School Principal Jonathan Klomp and Robert Moses Middle School Principal Elizabeth Walsh-Bulger. Sparacio was born and raised in North Babylon, and is a member of the Class of 1993. He has worked in the district as director of physical education, health, recreation and athletics for eight years, prior to which he was a physical education teacher and coach in the West Islip School District for nearly 12 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Hofstra University, a master’s degree in liberal arts and a professional certificate in school district administration, both from Stony Brook University. “I am not one who likes to have attention drawn on me,” Sparacio said. “I prefer to glorify and recognize others, however, I am very flattered that my colleagues took the time

An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.
