(GPI) in Babylon on January 27th to learn about the future of engineering and different career pathways available in the field. Students learned about cutting edge technologies available and were able to put their engineering skills to work in a group project. GPI representatives spoke about civil engineering, landscape design and architecture, traffic engineering and other specialized fields in their presentations. Music Festivals by the Suffolk County Music Educator’s Association; the high school string quartet of Kristina Scheid, Olivia Duhon, Jessica Szanto and Caroline Pombonyo, under the direction of Dominic DePaola, earned the privilege to perform at the Long Island String Festival Association chamber music festival; three high school art students — Sarah Ansman, Ruth Mistretta and Shauneil Williams —
are set to showcase their remarkable artwork at the All-County Art Show on February 6th at Old Town Hall in Babylon (Ansman also entered a scholarship show, which is featured alongside All-County); under the direction of chorus teacher Christina Henderson, a harmonic group of vocalists performed at the Suffolk County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission; and theatre teacher and director Lisa Drance led her Theatre III students to Suffolk County Community College to perform an original play for Unity Day; North Babylon students comprised the only group selected in the entire county to perform. The recent accomplishments of art, music and theatre students throughout North Babylon are a testament to their talents, as well as to the stellar level of instruction they receive.

And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to
say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-
way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs
of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

McCaffrey was appropriately assigned to read Snow Day! by Lester L. Laminack, as the class was anticipating the first major snowfall of the year predicted to begin the following day. The Community Reader program brings in guest readers from the greater Babylon area in order to promote the importance and joy of reading. The program also provides young students a chance to meet local leaders and learn
about what they do for the community. For example, McCaffrey explained to the attentive class how he helps people in Suffolk County by listening to their concerns and passing laws if necessary. “These kids were really bright and truly interested in learning what local elected officials do in the community,” said McCaffrey. “However, I believe they were even more interested in listening to me read the book selection. This is a positive program and it is just so much fun for all involved.” McCaffrey has had the honor of being a reader at
Forest Avenue a number of times previously, and he has served in a similar capacity at other elementary schools across the 14th Legislative District. Reaching out to the younger generations is a high priority of McCaffrey, who believes that teaching about civics and the importance of community service will inspire today’s youths to become future leaders. Newest Eagle
Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to recognize Troop 179’s newest Eagle Scout, John A. Cuomo, at a Court of Honor held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. This was a momentous event for John, who hails from West Babylon, and it was heavily attended by his family, friends, fellow scouts, and elected officials from state and local governments. Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is a high honor in Scouting, and it also carries with it the respect of the community – and for good reason. The path to the Eagle Scout rank is an arduous one, even for the most dedicated
of candidates. All of the requirements of the Eagle Scout rank must be met before a candidate turns 18 years of age. Therefore, in addition to earning the required merit badges and completing a substantial service project, the art of time management simply must be mastered. For his Eagle Scout project, John chose to organize a blood drive which took place in January of 2015. The month of January was chosen due to its being the time of year at which blood banks tend to experience critical shortages. John’s hard work and determination led to a very successful drive which netted a total of 45 donations.
“Countless lives were no doubt saved by John’s efforts,” said McCaffrey. “John is a role model for both young and old alike, and our community is truly fortunate to have such a leader. When John completes his education, I certainly hope that he chooses to remain here in Suffolk County to continue his commitment to service.” Currently, John is a freshman in St. John’s University pharmacy program, and he was very happy to report that during his first semester, he achieved a 4.0 GPA. Based on his successes to date, John is sure to deliver more positive news in the very near future.

Tobacco Champions The Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island and Northwell Health’s Center for Tobacco Control presented Suffolk County Community College’s Dr. Christopher Adams with the Tobacco Control Champion Award for 2016 for spearheading Suffolk’s college-wide tobaccofree policy that ensures the health and safety of students and employees of the college. “While the use of tobacco is a personal choice, the health hazards related to smoking and exposure to second- and third-hand smoke are welldocumented and can affect not only the smoker, but also the nonsmoker who is exposed to the smoke,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay.
“I would like to commend the leadership of the Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees, President Shaun L. McKay and the Tobacco Free Implementation Committee in making Suffolk County Community College a tobacco free environment,” said Dr. Christopher Adams, vice president for student affairs. “The policy demonstrates that protecting the health of students and employees is an essential component of a successful workplace as well as a safe teaching and learning environment,” said P.J. Tedeshi from the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island. Approximately 28,200 New Yorkers die prematurely each year because of tobacco. Nearly
a 500,000 New Yorkers suffer from serious diseases directly attributable to smoking, including lung and oral cancers, heart disease, stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Tobacco related diseases add up to $10.4 billion in medical costs annually in New York. Secondhand smoke also causes premature death and disease in children and in adults who do not smoke. In addition, secondhand smoke immediately affects the heart and blood circulation in a harmful way. Over time, it also causes heart disease and lung cancer. Indoor and outdoor tobacco-free policies are an important factor in eliminating secondhand smoke exposure.

Each year on February 11th (2/11), United Way launches a statewide initiative 2-1-1 to educate communities about the valuable free, online directory of health and human services’ agencies and programs available in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The Long Island Database is updated and managed daily and provides website visitors with detailed information on more than 10,000 community resources for help and assistance in a range of areas. In addition to the full
database, there are also special searches for specific populations including veteran’s services, services for those who are developmentally disabled and their caregivers and informational updates during weather emergencies. This information, as well as a community calendar of events, can be viewed through multimedia platforms including Facebook and Twitter. United Way of Long Island coordinates the LI region and call center and the Middle Country Pub-
lic Library maintains and updates the database that provides the information for the call center. Middle Country Public Library provides training to the public on using the database at the library or by special appointment for larger groups or organizations.
