Fortunately, Boy Scouting does a fine job of preparing young men for the real world with practical and leadership skills. For his project, Bryan chose to renovate space at St. John the Baptist High School to be used for the “Midnight Run” group. The project involved all kinds of manual labor including, but not limited to, moving furniture, painting walls, and the assembling and installation of shelving units. “Midnight Run” assists the homeless by providing them with food and clothing, and this newly renovated space is surely a welcome contribution to their cause. “Bryan’s service project will play a vital

The ceremony took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Islip, and was attended by officials or their representatives from state and local government, scouts of all ages, and the proud family of Bryan. The path that an Eagle Scout candidate must travel is a challenging one to say the least. In addition to earning a slew of merit badges, each candidate must complete a service project as the capstone requirement. The project must be designed to benefit the community, and everything from its planning to execution must be orchestrated by the Scout. This is no small task, as projects of

More than 150 students and family members attended North Babylon School District’s first Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) Family Fun Night at Robert Moses Middle School. The event, which was open to all K-8 students and their parents, featured six fun and educational STEAM activity stations. The first station was based on the Hour of Code and featured tutorials about computer programming. At the second station,

students and parents were taught to use a paper and pen to write out code that could then be used to build models out of everyday materials, such as plastic cups. The third station taught participants to code elementary robots using math and ELA skills. Station four featured lessons on construction and coding with building block kits, which participants used to construct models and incorporate motors and sensors which could then be hooked up to computers

and programmed. Station five was comprised of interactive Tangram and words-learning tools; while station six featured invention devices. In addition to the six activity stations, participants took part in 3-D printer demonstrations and observed a humanoid robot. Student volunteers from the National Honor Society and Computer Club led each station activity during the district’s first STEAM and Family Fun night.

The service project allows the candidate to apply and further hone his skillsets, and it ultimately serves as a lasting contribution to the community. For his service project, Justin chose to direct his talents to the ongoing effort to rebuild his community, which was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Specifically, Justin organized a beach cleanup, in addition to designing and constructing two ﬂy traps that were destroyed by the infamous 2012 storm. This work will go a long way in restoring the beauty of the shoreline, and allow countless individuals to enjoy the outdoors for years to come. “The amount of work

and heart put into Justin’s Eagle Scout project was nothing short of inspiring,” said McCaffrey. “Long Island residents were hit very hard by Superstorm Sandy, and local treasures, like our beaches, sustained unprecedented damage. Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Troop 175’s Justin Leeb. Justin, a West Babylon resident, received his new rank – the highest attainable in Boy Scouting – at the East Farmingdale Volunteer Fire Department. The ceremony was attended by Scouts of all ages, elected officials, and of course, Justin’s proud family. Despite the notoriety that the rank of Eagle Scout has in our society, not many people are aware of the amount of time and dedication that is required to reach this level of Scouting. Aside from having to earn a wide variety of merit badges and acquiring new knowledge and life skills, the culmination

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Watch Out For the Post-Holiday “Blues”

Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people, however, suffer very severely from this syndrome.
