West Babylon Senior High School student Jordan Lynn Musante organized a fundraiser and has been raising money since Tuesday, April 16th at a table outside her school cafeteria for people adversely affected by the tragedy of the Boston Marathon bombings. Staffed solely by student volunteers, the collection raised over $350 by Friday, April 19th. The students made posters and distributed “Boston” ribbon pins to raise awareness of the fundraising effort. All money raised will be donated to The One Fund Boston (onefundboston. org).

I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions
among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the

North Babylon High School has moved on to the Regional Quarter-Finals of MSG Varsity’s, The Challenge, and will take on Northport High School on Monday, May 6th at 6:30 p.m. on Cablevision’s Optimum, Channel 14. North Babylon High School is joined by seven other schools from Suffolk County, as they head into Regional QuarterFinal play, while trying to qualify for the Tri-State Championship Playoffs. Back for his fourth season as host of “The Challenge” is Jared Cotter, host of “MSG Varsity’s Talent Show” and a popular semi-finalist from American Idol. Cotter will serve as moderator, testing competing teams on their knowledge of history, arts and literature, current events, math, and science in front of a live studio audience.
“The action is really heating up as we progress to the final rounds of the Regional Championships,” said Cotter. “You can see the intensity of the player’s faces and excitement of the fans building as we move on in the competition.” The North Babylon High School team is represented by: Emmanuel Nimarko, Brian Manzo (Captain), Max Servetas, John Cuomo and (Alternate) Katie Schneider. The academic advisor is Erin Casserly. “The Challenge” includes 192 high schools from the entire tri-state area — Long Island (with Nassau and Suffolk as two distinct regions), the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut. Long Island will be represented by 32 high schools from Nassau County and 32 high schools from Suffolk
County. A new matchup can been seen every Sunday through Friday at 6:30 p.m., on MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s Optimum Channel 14. Participating schools advance through a series of elimination rounds, with one school in each region being crowned regional champion and winning $2,500 for their school. The winning teams from each region go on to “The Challenge” Championship where they square off in a Tri-State Showdown. The school awarded the title of Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final “Challenge” Championship game will receive $500.
