Wantagh Chamber of Commerce 2nd St. Patrick's Day Parade March 20th, 2022 Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder - Grand Marshal Nassau County Police Department

Patrick J. Ryder was named Commissioner of the Nassau County Police Department in February 2018. He has spent 38 years in law enforcement, serving the last 36 years with the Nassau County Police Department. Commissioner Ryder began his law enforcement career with the New York Police Department in January 4, 1984. He joined the NCPD on July 18, 1986 and was assigned to the 3rd Precinct and in 1989 assigned to the Bureau of Special Operations. Promoted to Sergeant in 1995 and assigned to the 5th Precinct, 8th Squad, and the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) as the Deputy Commanding Officer. In 2008 he was designated the Commanding Officer of AFU, where he proactively implemented a number of life-saving programs and initiatives that helped ensure officer and public safety. These include the NCPD’s Real-Time Intelligence (RTI) system; the R.E.A.C.H. Program; the Civilian Intelligence Analyst Program; the DNA Collection Initiative; and the creation of the Counter-Terrorism Unit, Think Tank, and the Department’s Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team (CIRRT). Together these initiatives have brought crime in Nassau County to historic lows, allowing residents to enjoy one of the lowest crime rates in the United States. Commissioner Ryder has a Master’s Degree in Homeland Security and Management from Long Island University. He is an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice and Intelligence-Led Policing at Nassau Community College and taught at Dowling College until 2015. He currently sits on the Advisory Board for Criminal Justice at SUNY Farmingdale and has been a Counter-Terrorism Lecturer at the University of Maryland Center for Health and Homeland Security. Commissioner Ryder is a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services-Certified Law Enforcement Instructor, a New York State Certified Crime and Intelligence Analyst, a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist, and has Top Secret clearance with the FBI’s New York Field Office. He has also been deputized as an IRS Criminal Investigator. Additionally, he has trained members of law enforcement agencies from Egypt, Tajikistan, Tunisia, South Africa, and Turkey. He and his wife Jill have three children: Liam, Sean, and Meghan.
Wantagh High School Writer Is Golden Nora Toscano is only a junior in high school, but she can already call herself an awardwinning writer. The Wantagh High School student was recently recognized with a Gold Key award in the Scholastic Arts and Writing competition. The winning piece was her short story, “Young Adult,” about a girl who comes from a family with a history on mental illness and the impact it has on her. Nora does a lot of writing beyond her school assignments, and “Young Adult” was a story she wrote on her own. She submitted it to the Scholastic Arts contest with the help of her 10th grade English teacher and newspaper adviser Kathleen Flynn. “It’s really satisfying to win this award,” Nora said. “Creative writing is so important to me. It’s something I am very passionate about.” Nora received honorable mention in last year’s contest, so this year’s Gold Key award represents her progression as a writer. She now advances in the competition and will compete for a National Medalist prize.

Fun Ways For Children To Participate In St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations St. Patrick’s Day commemorates its namesake, the patron saint of Ireland who helped spread Christianity across this island nation. While it may have begun as a religious holiday, eventually the fanfare expanded to transform St. Patrick’s Day into a secular celebration spanning the world — reaching Irish diaspora in various countries. In fact, some of the largest St. Patrick’s Day events occur outside of Ireland. In addition to paying homage to St. Patrick, the holiday is largely known for being one big party catering to the over-21 crowd. It’s common to find people raising pints throughout the day on St. Patrick’s Day. However, for those who want children to be a part of the festivities, there are plenty of entertaining ways to incorporate them into any celebration. Master Teacher Excited To Learn And Grow Wantagh Elementary School STEAM teacher Kaitlin Humphrey has been accepted into the New York State Master Teacher program, which will provide her with additional professional development opportunities as well as connections with educators across the state. Ms. Humphrey was one of 230 teachers, including only 55 elementary teachers, selected for the program this year. This is Ms. Humphrey’s sixth year in Wantagh. After working as a pre-K through sixth grade science teacher at the Harbor Country Day School in St. James, she joined the Wantagh teaching staff in 2016 as its first STEAM teacher. For four years, she taught third, fourth and fifth grade classes at all three elementary schools. After a year as a third grade classroom teacher, she returned to STEAM this year, working with grades K-5 at Wantagh Elementary School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in science in elementary education and biology and a master’s degree in science in special education, both from Manhattan College. “STEAM is fun and it’s naturally engaging,” she said about the subject which combines elements of science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. “It’s learning through discovery. It’s very rewarding for students to have experiences where they’re able to create and fail and redo. It mimics real life.” Ms. Humphrey’s classroom is filled with materials that may not seem typical for a regular classroom, such as Legos and robots. She noted that the program, by its nature, does not have a defined curriculum.
Some activities support and enhance classroom lessons, while others give students completely new and original educational experiences. Fourth graders build Rube Goldberg machines, fifth graders create and market their own inventions and all grades dabble in coding. Sometimes, students just have some free building time to explore their creativity. The decision to pursue the Master Teacher designation, Ms. Humphrey explained, stemmed from her desire to constantly improve the STEAM program. She will now get to take advantage of a wider range of workshops and training sessions. Master Teachers must do 50 hours a year of professional development. “I want to further my role in Wantagh and as a teacher in general,” she said. “Being a Master Teacher means more and richer professional growth opportunities, which I can bring into the classroom and share with my colleagues.” Ms. Humphrey will be a part of the Master Teacher program for four years. However, she said, the opportunities for professional development continue beyond that and the connections she will make with other STEAM teachers will last a lifetime. The Master Teacher program is hosted by SUNY campuses, and is supported on Long Island by Stony Brook University. The extensive application process required a detailed resumé, interviews, a writing sample, an original presentation and recommendations from administrators and fellow teachers.

Teacher Turned Author Shares Her Craft

Former Wantagh Elementary School teacher Karen Kerge couldn’t stay away for too long. After retiring in June following a 33-year career as an educator, she returned as a published author for a series of assemblies. Following her retirement, Ms. Kerge wrote “Betsy the Diva Dog” about her 11-year-old canine companion. As a teacher, she captivated her students with tales of Betsy and decided it would make a great book. The theme of the story is that everyone is unique and has their own
special talents. In meeting with each grade, Ms. Kerge spoke about the writing process and coming up with ideas for stories. Creating the book stemmed from her desire to still make a positive difference for children in her postteaching career. Ms. Kerge noted that publishing a book requires collaboration, discussing how she worked with an illustrator to bring her words to life. She also emphasized to her young audience that reading and writing are interconnected.
At the end of her book is a writing prompt for children based on their own personal experiences. Ms. Kerge taught fourth grade at Wantagh Elementary School for 25 years, then moved to kindergarten for her last eight years. Many students were delighted to see their first ever teacher in Wantagh. “This is definitely a walk down memory lane,” Ms. Kerge said. “It’s thrilling to be able to come back to a school I loved.”

Meanwhile, the average emergency medical response time is eight minutes in most areas, while 14 minutes in rural areas. It's crucial to know what to do without waiting for emergency medical help. • Know the signs of choking. When someone is choking, they cannot breathe because the object is blocking their airway. They may not be able to breathe or talk at all or may only be able to do so partially. They may make wheezing or rattling sounds and seem to be in distress. If the person choking knows the international sign, they may put one or both hands over their neck to indicate to others that something is stuck. • Share the knowledge with others. Everyone
needs to know how to reduce choking risks and what to do if someone is choking. The information should be shared with all family members, teachers, lunchroom workers, restaurant staff, etc. The more people who know what to do, the more we can reduce the number of deaths due to choking. Principal Dr. Stephanie Scolieri said more than two dozen teachers and pupil personnel services professionals were trained to lead the sessions. During the sessions in February, which totaled about three hours, students were empowered to love themselves. Girls looked inside to recognize their strengths and identify the attributes that make them beautiful. “The purpose of Beautiful Me is to get the girls to appreciate who they are,” said Dr. Scolieri, who first brought the program to the school several years
ago. “Everyone should be proud of who they are, and that’s the point.” Girls learned about the importance of self-care and productive conflict resolution strategies. The sessions were about building each other up, and studwents filled each other’s heart-shaped boxes with compliments. As a gift from the foundation, each participant received a necklace with three interlocking hearts, in honor of the three girls. Dr. Scolieri said that Beautiful Me sessions will be held later in the year for seventh grade girls. How St. Patrick’s Day Is Celebrated In Ireland
Initially a religious holiday to commemorate the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has since evolved into a global celebration of Irish culture. In fact, it has become one of the most popular days of the year to throw a party and gather with others. So how do people in Ireland — the heart of where St. Patrick’s Day originated — celebrate each March 17th? Should travelers find themselves in Ireland this time of year, here’s what to expect in terms of St. Patrick’s Day commemorations. Since St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday, expect schools, banks and some businesses to be closed around the country and in portions of Northern Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day tourism is big business, so restaurants and pubs likely will be open and may extend their hours. According to the vacationing resource Travel Awaits, more than 100,000 travelers visit Dublin from March 14 to March 18 to partake in St. Patrick’s Day festivities. COVID-19
likely will impact how many visit this year. As St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, devout Irish Catholics will treat the day as a religious celebration and may attend mass at nearby churches. Even though St. Patrick’s Day falls during the solemn season of Lent, since St. Patrick’s Day 2022 falls on a Thursday this year, one does not need to worry about any Lenten fasting restrictions. However, abstaining from meat usually is put on pause when St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Lenten Friday anyway. The biggest St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place in Dublin, and it’s full of national
pride. Additional smaller parades may be held across Ireland as well. Travelers may experience “drowning the shamrock” as they visit Irish pubs on St. Patrick’s Day. It is traditional to drop a shamrock into customers’ drinks in the pub. As such, it is surmised that having many drinks undoubtedly means more good luck for the year ahead due to all those lucky shamrocks. It’s common to come across religious rituals, pilgrimages and processions on St. Patrick’s Day, particularly to places associated with St. Patrick. Downpatrick in County Down is believed to be the final resting place of St. Patrick and many people visit the grave and cathedral there. Some also may want to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Ireland celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in similar fashion as other countries, but the country offers unique takes on the festivities as well.
Organize And Promote Traditional Seisiún
Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Even if
gatherings come together fluidly, pub and restaurant owners can facilitate the process. Here are some tips to make it happen. • Plan for and post regular seisiún schedules on your website. A regular seisiún can occur every Saturday evening and also on St. Patrick’s Day. • Reach out via social media to Irish musicians and encourage them to attend sessions at your business. • Quiet crowds when musicians decide to perform impromptu, even when gatherings fall outside of regularly scheduled seisiún. • Keep songbooks
available for patrons who want to join in. While many musicians or novice singers may be familiar with certain tunes, they may not know them all. Having lyrics and music available helps include many others in the fun. • Share news of seisiún at other pubs and establishments and they may do the same for yours. This way music lovers can enjoy music many nights of the week. A great seisiún makes people happy and fills their minds and hearts with wonderful music for some time. This is a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.

Mandalay Students Defined By Determination

Students certainly know how to give it their all at Mandalay Elementary School in the Wantagh School District. Principal Marie Pisicchio presented perseverance awards to 28 children. Ms. Pisicchio explained that the awards are presented annually to students who never quit and give
“110 percent.” Each classroom, special area and supportive service teacher selected a student who has best demonstrated perseverance during the first half of the 2021-22 school year. “It’s not necessarily about outcomes,” said Ms. Pisicchio, who also selects a student. “It’s
about the amount of effort that they put in.” Students were recognized during the morning announcements and invited to the lobby where they were presented with their certificates. The perseverance awards read, “When things yet tough, you

Business Students Make Their Pitch Eighth graders in the Business Management class at Wantagh Middle School recently participated in the Shark Tank Challenge. Business education teacher Nancy O’Connor said that students had to come up with a business name, concept, logo, slogan, commercial and website. The young entrepreneurs also had to complete industry, financial, competitive and SWOT analyses. Students pitched their businesses virtually to a panel of judges. Participating through Google Meet and evaluating each team’s business plan were Jeffrey Memisha of Realty Advisors, Cathy Powell of the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and Lorraine Englander and Linda Furey of Junior Achievement. The first place winners were Danny Donahue and Luca Valentino for their business, Taste of Success.
