Come Taste & See Is there anything quite as timeless as a nice dinner out on the town followed up with a wonderful show? Whether you’re grabbing a burger and catching a late flick, or dressing up to the nines with 5-star reservations to see the latest Broadway smash, good food and entertainment will always be a winning combo. Woodloch Resort in Hawley, Pennsylvania respects and honors this tradition. Perhaps it is best showcased through what has simply been known for the past 55 years as Theme Night. On select evenings, the stereotypical Poconos resort backdrop would be “transformed” to bring guests to exotic locales such as Hawaii, Paris, Camelot, the Wild West, and even journeys through time! The dining hall would be decorated accordingly, with every patron greeted by a colorful cast of characters representing each theme. With a friendly “hello” and a handshake, diners were then escorted to their dressed and set tables in the main dining room. Dinners were always something special; a decadent feast of flavors went hand in hand with every Theme Night. Woodloch’s famous homemade soups, salads and breads preceded bountiful main courses like beef tenderloin, Jail Island salmon, jumbo shrimp cocktail, twin pork medallions and even a vegetarian “cauliflower steak.” Guests were wise to save some room for dessert; they were rewarded with ice cream dishes, chocolate lava cakes, and creative spins on classics like crème brulee and cheesecake. Each and every dish was served by the regular staff, dressed harmonious with the evening. As dessert bowls were licked clean, a literal parade of staff would march through the corridors of the dining room, featuring costumed characters of all kinds, beckoning guests to join them for the rest of the evening. Plenty of photo ops ensued, and many a happy family memory would be captured. In the early days of the resort, entertainment staff would lead the parade straight to a celebration with live music from the house band. In 1979, the resort took their Theme Nights to the next level by coupling it up with entertainment after the parade. Using a regular cast, including show director Joey Casella, every show featured song and dance numbers congruent with the evening’s theme. Guests loved it, and it became an annual tradition- each year bringing something new to the excited crowd. What started out as a modest feature in front of only about 100 sets of eyes gained quite a bit of popularity over time. As seating became scarcer as the resort grew, the smaller venue of the resort’s “North Lodge” simply wasn’t enough to accommodate everyone. In 1987, Woodloch opened their Heritage Nightclub, with seating for more than 600 guests. A supersized stage with trapdoor, state-of-the-art sound system, retracting video screens and huge dance floor truly brought any featured acts to the next level. The stage grew, and so did the production of the show! More stage space meant more room for elaborate set-piece props, including staircases, cars and airplanes, ships and elaborate mural backdrops. Woodloch celebrated their “Wonderful World of Television” night in 2014 with the purchase of a 22 foot LCD display, bringing truly vibrant and breathtaking imagery to the stage. And no show would ever be complete without a grand finale featuring stage pyrotechnic displays!

Woodloch Resort! As Woodloch’s shows grew, so did the interest in joining the cast. As word spread of the flourishing production, it reached aspiring Broadway stars and entertainers from across the lands. Show rehearsal would start in November of each year with opening night just before New Year’s Eve. Guests would have the entire calendar year to enjoy the feature before the cycle would bring the next incarnation. “Every year as our current show draws to an end, we work diligently to ensure that next year’s production raises the bar,” says Brad Kiesendahl, owner. “I can say for sure that we are always very excited to bring new thrills and smiles to our guests!” Though the cast has said hello and farewell to many faces over the years, the spirit of bringing Broadway magic to the Pocono Mountains remains the same. After a 20 month hiatus from 2020, the show is officially back on! 2022’s Theme Show features Woodloch’s tribute to “Islands of the World.” From the Caribbean to Great Britain, Long Island to Hawaii and everything in between, visitors can expect over an hour of world-class entertainment for all ages to enjoy. Calypso and reggae, maybe a twist of country music. “2022’s show echoes our very first theme night, which paid homage to our 50th state, Hawaii,” says Joey Casella, show director. “That was 1967, and it’s safe to say things have changed a little bit since then. Still, this is a wonderful tribute to those days for some of our guests who will remember!” Woodloch’s Theme Show is offered Wednesday and Saturday evenings through the summer and Saturdays the rest of the year round. Come visit Woodloch Resort and enjoy all their Theme Night and resort has to offer!

Don’t Forget This Sunday Brunch Staple

S

unday brunch is a popular tradition for many families and groups of friends. Restaurants typically prepare special menus for Sunday brunch, and some families even gather at home after church services to break bread and leisurely enjoy a meal that isn’t quite breakfast or lunch. Sunday brunch menus vary, but one staple you’re sure to find on brunch menus at your favorite restaurant is the Bloody Mary. Long considered to be a hangover cure, the Bloody Mary has become a go-to drink among brunch devotees. Though there’s no telling if its purported restorative properties after a night of drinking are accurate or urban legend, the Bloody Mary maintains its must-have status on brunch menus across the globe. And while its restorative properties are linked to its typically large dose of vodka, brunch enthusiasts who are not looking to recover from a night on the town can enjoy a virgin Bloody Mary, which contains no alcohol at all. Brunch hosts can offer guests their own versions of a Bloody Mary, be it a “Virgin Mary” or an “Experienced Bloody Mary,” thanks to this recipe from Betty Rosbottom’s “Sunday Brunch” (Chronicle Books).

Cool Off With Homemade Ice Cream

I

ce cream is an indulgence few people can resist. With a vast array of flavors to tempt any palate, ice cream is popular year-round, but particularly so when the mercury rises. Few desserts can cap a hot day better than a few scoops of thick and frosty ice cream. The supermarket freezer case or a local ice cream shop may offer plenty of ice cream options, but ice cream also can be prepared at home with some patience and quality ingredients. This recipe for “Meyer Lemon-Buttermilk Ice Cream” marries the chill of ice cream with summer citrus. A Meyer lemon is a hybrid of a lemon and a mandarin orange, offering a unique balance of citrus flavor. Enjoy this recipe, courtesy of “Chocolate Obsession: Confections and Treats to Create and Savor” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang) by Michael Recchiuti & Fran Gage.

Meyer Lemon-Buttermilk Ice Cream Makes 1 quart 3⁄4 cup (6 ounces) heavy whipping cream 2⁄3 cup granulated cane sugar, divided into halves 2 Meyer lemons, (1 zested and both juiced to equal 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice) 1⁄2 Tahitian vanilla bean, split horizontally 1⁄3 cup whole milk 6 extra-large egg yolks 1 1⁄4 cups (10 ounces) buttermilk, chilled

Directions: Stir the cream and 1⁄3 cup of the sugar together in a small saucepan. Finely grate the zest from the lemon into the pan. (The lemon can then be juiced as part of the 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice.) Scrape the vanilla seeds from the bean into the pan and then add the bean. Bring the cream to a boil over medium heat. Turn off the heat, cover the top of the pan with plastic wrap, and let cool to room temperature. Transfer to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate overnight. The next day, strain the cream through a fine-mesh sieve and return to the saucepan. Add the milk. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. While the cream mixture is heating, combine the egg yolks and the remaining 1⁄3 cup sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whip attachment. Beat on medium-high speed until the mixture is pale and thick and forms a ribbon when the whip is lifted from the bowl, 3 to 5 minutes. Switch the mixer to low speed. Slowly pour the hot cream mixture into the bowl and beat just until combined. Do not beat to a froth. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the custard coats a spoon and registers 160 F on an instantread thermometer, about 5 minutes. Pour through the fine-mesh sieve into a bowl. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the custard overnight. The next day, add the buttermilk and lemon juice to the custard and stir to mix. Churn the custard in an ice-cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
