Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi) was once again home to FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmages – presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which brought science and creativity together on a robotics playing field. On Saturday, December 9th and Sunday, December 10th, twenty-nine teams from across Long Island competed in a friendly tournament-style scrimmage that prepared them for the upcoming season of FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm).
Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world are asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponentcolored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots on “balancing stones.” FIRST Tech Challenge is

an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries. Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. During all FIRST Tech Challenge tournaments, teams work in alliances with the goal of scoring more points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods, on a 12-by-12-foot playing field. Last weekend’s scrimmages were the first events in the 2017-2018 FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island. Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reflect. Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected
direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

And, in that, we create our very own snowflake, a composite of our unique qualities and circumstances, our passions and personalities. No two are alike, and each one is exceptionally fragile and should be handled with care.
The second rationale follows the logic that, simply because the calendar has flipped its pages does not mean that any other substantial changes are destined to follow. New year, new you… but only if you take the necessary steps to make it so. The FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition season will once again kick off at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University. On Saturday, January 6th, 2018 at 9 a.m., FIRST Robotics Competition teams from across Long Island will gather in anticipation of learning about the forthcoming season’s robotics competition. Knowing only that this year’s theme is FIRST POWERUPSM, the local FIRST teams, and the more than 3,000 teams around the world, will receive this year’s game rules via NASA satellite transmission from FIRST headquarters in New Hampshire. During the Long Island Kick Off, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which presents the event, will also hold a special informational session for parents of participating students, during which
they will learn about the organization, its mission and the importance of the robotics programs. Students and parents alike will also be treated to presentations from alumni, mentors and sponsors regarding the impact of the program on the local communities and businesses. Towards the close of the event, each team will then collect its kit of parts to construct a 120-pound robot over the six-week design and build period leading up to the FIRST Robotics Competition tournaments. Following last year’s record-breaking registration for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, the organization will now be hosting two regional tournaments across two sets of consecutive dates. Planned as a double header, these back-to-back regionals will be held April 9th to 11th and April 12th to 14th, 2018 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition
Complex. Each event will serve as a separate regional, with different teams competing in separate alliances and tournament rounds. Some of the teams set to participate in the local regionals will move on to compete at the 2018 FIRST Championship in Detroit. Leading up to the regionals, SBPLI students will work with engineering mentors to apply concepts of math and science learned in the classroom to build their robots. Students will also learn important concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and healthy competition. Many SBPLI students use these skills while pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies and careers. Over the years, FIRST students from Long Island received millions of dollars in scholarships for higher education. This year, students participating in FIRST will have access to more than $50 million

worth of scholarships. “We are very excited to get our 2018 season underway and are looking forward to another great kick-off event,” says Larry Toonkel, newly appointed Co-Director, FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST Long Island. “With two Regionals in the works, we know that this year will be an especially pivotal one for SBPLI and STEM education on Long Island. Christmas came a little early this year to the young patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, thanks to the kindness of technical wizards at Presidio and Cisco Systems. Through the Cisco Santa Connection, patients who are unable to celebrate in the comfort of their own homes due to illness can still experience the magic of the holiday. Using a video monitor and web-enabled camera today, Santa “virtually” visited with children in the third floor playroom who were eager to discuss their holiday wish lists. The children, who were led to believe that Santa was communicating live from his home in the North Pole, deliveredw a list that ran the gamut from electric guitars and video games to toy trucks and art books. In the meantime, Santa (who spends the rest of the year as a Cohen Children’s employee) spoke lovingly to the children who were accompanied in the playroom by Child Life staff members dressed as elves and other holiday characters. And, for those who didn’t feel well enough to leave their rooms, a mobile cart or iPad enabled with Cisco Jabber software helped Santa travel room-to-room for a personalized bedside visit – all of this without once leaving his workshop in the North Pole, according to the children.

Inquisitive Minds Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students in the Port Jefferson School District took part in the national Computer Science Education Week’s “Hour of Code,” an initiative to encourage them to spend one hour to learn to program with an ultimate goal of wanting to learn more advanced coding. Students in Kim Pelkonen’s fourth-grade
class were introduced to Flappy Bird, a simple, popular game in which the user controls the bird through narrow passageways without hitting the pipes on the screen. They used their Chromebooks to access the educational site Khan Academy, which uses detailed, step-by-step instructional videos to teach code. According to
Pelkonen, the program makes it possible for advanced students to move ahead and manages to assist others by filling in the gaps if they missed any concepts. “They really enjoyed it,” said Pelkonen. “The game was a fun introduction and got them excited. Many students asked me to assign a new project so that they could try it at home.”

Setauket Elementary School fourth-grade students in Eric Gustafson’s class in the Three Village Central School District are strengthening their writing skills as they step inside the world of online journalism and complete creative writing entries for a class blog. Set up in a secure Google Classroom site, the students are writing about their favorite things, holiday gift ideas and
much more. Additionally, they are engaging with their peers in meaningful dialogue about the subjects shared. The project is designed to be a fun outlet for individual expression as well as provide students with the opportunity to build their use of the language. While writing for enjoyment, Mr. Gustafson continues to reinforce in the students the need to back up their statements
with evidence, to take care with their grammar and sentence structure. “I really like how the blog allows us to talk to our classmates and share experiences in order to get to know each other better,” said fourth-grader Samuel Siegal. In the future, Mr. Gustafson hopes to expand the blogging project to include video blogs and interactions between the class and their parents.
Celebrating through Art Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School students in the Rocky Point School District got into the holiday spirit by creating several different artistic creations. After reading the book “Gingerbread Friends,” by Jan Brett, first-grade students created two-
dimensional gingerbread houses. With the help of art teacher Laura Goelz, the students incorporated the lessons they learned on patterns and basic architecture to design their own individual structures. They embellished the drawings with a variety of details before adding a

dusting of “snow.” A d d i t i o n a l l y, kindergarten classes created candy canes full of sparkle and second-graders designed colorful holiday lights. All of the students’ creations lined the hallways in the building just before the holiday break.

Interface Toy Drive
In keeping with the true spirit of the holiday season, Brookhaven residents opened their hearts in a big way by donating thousands of toys at the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. The event, held on RANKING FIRST - Ward Melville High School’s Science Olympiad team recently December 15th, in the showcased their talents and skills during this year’s Long Island Science Olympiad lobby of Town Hall, was coInvitational Tournament. As a result of their knowledge and passion, the team came in sponsored by the Town of first place and was awarded a total of 19 medals in various categories. Exploring STEM Concepts and topics routed in STEM education were on full display this fall during Rocky Point School District’s first STEM Exposition. The event showcased STEM opportunities at the university level and in the workforce. Middle and high school students had opportunities to interact with scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians, and to discuss career information related to STEM fields. During the evening, several keynote speakers delivered STEM-focused presentations, including Dr. Abhay Deshpande from Brookhaven National Laboratory

and his daughter and Rocky Point Class of 2017 graduate Pooja Deshpande, Marc Alessi from the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, Mark Walker from the Sartorius Corporation, and Dr. Michael Caplan, Suffolk County chief medical examiner. Representatives from Stony Brook University, Applied DNA Science, Adelphi University, the Long Island Science Center, and numerous other STEM organizations also attended. The STEM Exposition also showcased Rocky Point students’ STEM accomplishments as Rocky Point Middle School and High School robotics
teams attended the event. During the event, students also participated in STEM challenges. Attendees designed and constructed straw towers, marshmallow catapults, “lunar landers,” and Popsicle stick bridges. Attendees also engaged in the engineering design process multiple times, revising their designs to continuously improve them. Rocky Point will look to build on the enthusiasm generated from the STEM Exposition, continuing to seek opportunities to promote STEM and to share college and career information related to STEM careers.

New Pre-School Program The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook isn’t just for grown-ups. Beginning next month, the museum’s education department will introduce a new program for pre-school children called Dynamic Kids of New York, let by instructor Susan Blake. “With growing interest in our family and school age programs, the education department at LIM has long been hoping to expand our offerings,” said museum educator Kristen Cuomo. “Developing preschool age enrichment in our gallery spaces was the next natural addition.” Instructor Susan Blake
will begin each program with a themed story, followed by creative movement exercises and simple art projects. The classes are designed for children ages three to five and are offered in two different sessions on Tuesdays or Fridays. “Susan Blake and her teaching style are a fixture in the local community, and her Dynamic Kids of New York programs are a wonderful fit for LIM,” continued Kristen. “With a focus on movement and kinesthetic learning, these mornings at the museum will offer our youngest visitors diverse and
exciting ways to interact with our galleries.” Classes will run from 10:45 a.m. to noon and the first three-week session will begin on Friday, January 12. Session II begins Tuesday, January 30. Parents interested in registering their children for the Dynamic Kids of New York program are asked to call the museum’s education department at 631.751.0066, ext. 12.
