Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

RESOLUTIONS New Year’s resolutions can be traced to the Mesopotamians. Ancient Babylonians also made spoken resolutions during a 12-day-long New Year Festival. Champagne, a sparkling wine from a specific region of France, was used in the baptism of the Frankish warrior Clovis, according to the Champagne Committee of France. Soon, champagne became a key part of religious events, coronations and soirees - as well as secular rituals that replaced formerly religious rituals, according to the book “When Champagne Became French” by Kolleen Guy. Champagne manufacturers eventually linked the bubbly to festive occasions with family, and New Year’s celebrations became another ideal time to pop the cork on a bottle.

Students Hone Entrepreneurship Skills Rocky Point High School’s Virtual Enterprise class, attended the annual Virtual Enterprises International Business and Entrepreneurship Leadership Conference, recently held at Long Island University. They were accompanied by business teacher Dorothy Burns. The conference enabled students to network with and hear from industry experts and successful entrepreneurs, including
Marie Moody, founder and CEO of Stella & Chewy’s, and Helen Avery, editor of Euromoney magazine. Students had the opportunity to participate in informative and exciting breakout sessions that discussed important business concepts such as social media marketing and secrets to fundraising success. As a culmination to the event, students delivered an elevatorpitch about their Virtual Enterprise company,
GeoMerch Inc., which was judged by business professionals. With an emphasis on college and career readiness, VEI is an inschool, global business simulation that offers students a competitive edge through project-based, collaborative learning and the development of skills in entrepreneurship, global business, problem-solving, communication, personal finance and technology.
CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY - Students in Michael Maletta’s seventh grade health class at Port Jefferson Middle School have been learning about the six pillars of character – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship – as well as the importance of antibullying in their school community. To culminate the health unit, they worked to create a welcoming, caring and safe environment by covering the classroom walls with posters sharing positive messages. “The posters will not only brighten the students’ day but will serve as a reminder to be thoughtful and respectful to each other throughout the school day and beyond,” Maletta said. Ward Melville High School seniors Kristin Quinn and Shawn Thomas have been named 2019 Suffolk Zone winners by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance based on their academic commitments
and leadership skills both in and out of the classroom. The students were nominated by physical education teachers Shannon Sioss and Ronald Muscarella, respectively. In order to be considered for this honor a student must earn an A average or above
90 in their high school physical education and health classes, maintain an overall grade point average of 3.0 at the completion of their junior year and be considered a role model in the school and a leader in physical education and health classes.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School studentathlete Hailey Hearney was awarded the honor of Class B, fourth team All-State for girls soccer. A junior, Hailey was also honored last year for her efforts on the soccer field with third team accolades. In addition to playing multiple high school sports for Port Jefferson, Hailey participates year-round in soccer clinics, showcases,

tournaments and travel teams. “Hailey’s commitment and dedication to advancing her craft make us all proud of her efforts,” athletic director Adam Sherrard said. “She is always looking to improve her skills. The Royals are looking forward to her helping to lead the Port Jefferson girls soccer team again next season.”
Five Rocky Point High School studentartists have entered the New York State Office of Information Technology Services’ computer safety contest. The competition works to engage young people to think about cybersecurity through the creation of posters that will encourage their peers to use the internet safely and securely.
Under the guidance of art teacher Katerina Kyriakakis, students Milayna Balthazar, Elizabeth Carrera, Alyssa Intini, Robert Manginello and Emmie Meyer will have their creative entries judged in early 2020. “We are grateful for the efforts of the students and the twofold mission of this contest: to build awareness and make a positive impact

on their classmates on cybersecurity issues while also enabling them to harness their creativity and to take a unique approach to help develop solutions with their visions,” Principal Jonathan Hart said. “We wish them well in the final part of the competition and thank Ms. Kyriakakis for encouraging their self-expression.”
On November 23, the Town of Brookhaven and the Special Olympics of New York hosted the tenth annual “Polar Plunge: Freezin’ for a Reason” at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. More than 800 plungers, including Councilwoman Jane Bonner, braved the cold water of the Long Island Sound to collectively raise over $155,000 for the Special Olympics of New York. Councilwoman Bonner, who led the “Frozen Eagles Team” at the plunge, helped to raise over $2600 for the Special Olympics. Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “Congratulations
to the Special Olympics of New York for another successful Polar Plunge. This event has become a great tradition here in Brookhaven Town and I thank all the plungers, volunteers, Town employees, and first responders for helping these dedicated athletes achieve their dreams.” “This was my 10th plunge and although it was chilly in the water and out in the cold air, it’s rewarding to know that we are helping these extraordinary athletes reach their goals,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “I commend the Special Olympics of New York, the

volunteers and my fellow plungers for making this year’s event a success and allowing dreams to come true for the athletes.” Special Olympics New York, Long Island Region has 4,000 athletes training and competing year-round in 22 Olympics-style sports. The athletes and their families or caregivers are never charged to participate. It costs $400 to support training and competition for one athlete for one sports season.
