In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, Community Housing Innovations (CHI) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have joined together to launch the CHI Fresh Start program. This initiative will allow the public to directly purchase Bed Bath & Beyond® gift cards for homeless families in five counties outside of New York City. As part of the kick-off for this program, Mr. Bellone presented the Harris family with the first-ever CHI Fresh Start-funded $100 Bed Bath & Beyond gift card, which he has purchased as a gift. Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In
the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council will kick off the new Sunday Street Music Series with a performance by singer-songwriter Sloan Wainwright in the museum’s Gillespie Room of the Carriage Museum. The Sunday Street Series began in 2004 at The University Cafe at Stony Brook University, when Charlie Backfish, host of the long-running weekly radio program Sunday Street on WUSB-FM, began presenting concerts with many of the
172 concerts with musicians from all over the world performing in an intimate venue. It’s a favorite of the likes of Eric Andersen, Fairport Convention, Garland Jeffreys, Iain Matthews, Graham Parker, Susan Werner and many more. The series begins at its new venue, the Long Island Museum in January with Sloan Wainwright, a singer/ songwriter best known for her rich contralto voice and a musical style combining

The outgoing spirit and dedication of the Setauket Elementary School Safety Patrol was recently recognized and commended by a local family, whose child was positively impacted by the members this year. In a letter written by Tom Palamara, a father of a Setauket student and the director of The Rinx
ice rink, he commended the students for their ongoing commitment toward creating a safe and welcoming school environment. Mr. Palamara explained how this group helped his son, who entered his first year at Setauket this year, feel comfortable in his new surroundings. In addition to the
praising letter, Mr. Palamara gave each Safety Patrol member a pass to skate free at The Rinx. During the presentation, he noted the students’ “great level of responsibility and compassion” and that “as a local business, these are the type of traits that I look for in future employees.”

SPECIAL DELIVERY - The Nassau County Emergency Ambulance Bureau Paramedics Association joined with Santa Claus to visit the pediatric patients at the Nassau University Medical Center and bring them a gift for the holidays recently. Message of Hope Port Jefferson Middle School students gained insight into smart decisionmaking and the benefits of hard work, perseverance and self-discipline after participating in an assembly called Given a Second Chance on December 11th. During the assembly, students met Robert
Aliano, who was left for dead when he was hit by a car after a night of partying in his senior year in college. Aliano, who was in a coma for six weeks and rehab for several months, was thought to never walk again. However, with the help of Jerry Figgiani, owner of East Coast Black Belt Academy in Middle
Island, Aliano persevered. Now, the pair travel to schools across Long Island sharing their story and powerful messages of hope. Aliano’s message to the students was to never give up, even if something bad happens. “Obstacles can be overcome with hard work,” he said.
Life Saving Donations To aid the Setauket Fire District in its ongoing commitment to protect the safety and wellbeing of the community, Fire Commissioner Jay Gardiner and department members graciously accepted a donation of four Resusci Anne CPR training units from the Smithtown Acura car dealership this December. “The district greatly appreciates the donation of CPR equipment, as these devices will be used to train not only our members, but also community residents,” said Setauket Fire District Manager David Sterne. “Given the fact that heartrelated emergencies can
affect anyone at any time, it is a strong commitment of the district to train more and more community members to properly administer CPR. Study after study shows that bystander CPR is what truly saves lives, and this donation can be used repeatedly to teach many people to save lives.” The donation is part of the National Automobile Dealers Association’s community outreach program, which is administered locally by the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association. Smithtown Acura is a member of the GNYADA, which
administers the CPR donations on behalf of the NADA Charitable Foundation. “It is a great honor to present this state-of-theart CPR equipment to our local fire department,” said General Manager of Smithtown Acura Allison Musante. “Having the appropriate lifesaving equipment allows professionals to become better at what they do: helping to save the lives of area residents.” New York State Assemblyman Steve Englebright officiated the event.

Tree Lighting Held The 28th Annual Tree of Life Lighting and Memorial Service held at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center’s Dudley Norton Garden, 101 Hospital Road, East Patchogue, was a wonderful community celebration and benefit for Brookhaven Hospice.
The evening’s Memorial service was uplifting as the family of Anthony Caliguiri performed tree lighting honors. Mr. Caliguiri passed away while in hospice care in June and those attending shared memories of his life. The Fellowship

Make-a-Wish is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to grant the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. According to the organization, they help to realize this goal approximately every 37 minutes.

Connected to Curriculum P.J. Gelinas Junior High School ninth-grade Computer Design class are learning about electronics and circuitry through several hands-on activities this December. With the help of teacher, Dean Kostis, the students are learning the different components of a circuit board, how to solder and use a multimeter to check
their circuits. Throughout the study, the class is working to construct two different types of boards; a time reaction tester game and a reactor chip. Putting the lessons they learned in the classroom into action, the students completed a refurbishment project for the building’s music department. They used their soldering skills
and a multimeter to repair a classic keyboard that hasn’t worked in several years. Mr. Kostis was able to show students that with a couple of inexpensive tools and some knowledge the keyboard could be repaired. It was a seamless bridge between what they are learning in class and applying it to the real world.

Staying Fit As part of an ongoing health initiative, Minnesauke Elementary School students are working to stay fit and active this winter season. Organized by their physical education teachers, students had the chance to compete in a monthlong fitness
log contest. The initiative challenged students to remain active for 60 minutes a day and chart their activities. The class with the highest number of logged minutes will be named the winners. In addition to the activity log initiative, the teachers transformed the school’s
gymnasium into a Winter Wonderland. The seven station project engaged students in a variety of activities, including “ice skating” at the North Pole, “dog sledding” with Snoopy, penguin bowling and floor hockey.

Mount Elementary School fourthgrader Madison Esposito a feature and cover photo on the December 7th edition of the nationally enjoyed Scholastic News magazine. The feature describes Madison’s interest in 3D printing, how these devices are used in both personal,
professional and medical settings as well as how her replica was produced at the DOOB store in New York City. “I was so excited to have made my ‘mini-me’ and happy to be included in the piece,” said Madison. “It is something I will always remember.” Madison’s experience not only sparked interest from
her peers but was also the foundation for a class discussion on the growing technology. The class read Madison’s feature, called “Me in 3D” and discussed how the printer differs from a regular printer and explained the innovative ways in which 3D printers are being used.

Special Tree Lighting The Children’s Center at United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk Inc. brought Rockefeller Center to its students this holiday season. The school hosted a tree lighting ceremony with a special visit from Santa on Friday, December 11th. Principal Sherri Glazer said that it is difficult for students to attend events like the Rockefeller Tree Lighting due to limitations, but this year students enjoyed a spectacular event that was just as fun. “Rockefeller Center has nothing on us,” Glazer told her overjoyed students as the tree was lit. Students had an opportunity to place their
handmade ornaments on the tree and then staff, students and parents counted down to light the tree. This was followed by individual pictures and personal time with Santa. Snacks were served and each student received a toy of their choice. Local artist Mel Moran serenaded the crowd with acoustic versions of holiday songs during the event. “The Children’s Center Tree Lighting was a huge success,” Glazer said. “This event supported our students’ independence and functional movement as well as supporting them with positioning while getting the perfect picture with Santa. I want to thank
the Patchogue Rotary and the Gutierrez Family for sponsoring the event. Thank You to Mel Moran and to Edward Friedman who played Santa and donated the toys to the school.” The Children’s Center is a comprehensive educational program designed to meet the needs of students with developmental delays and disabilities from infancy through 21 years of age. The program operates through funding provided by the New York State Department of Education and the New York State Department of Health.
